This is the most common antelope of the bushveld regions of South Africa. Impala are typically found in three distinct social groups, the female herds, the bachelor herds and the territorial bulls. Mating season happens toward the end of the wet season in May then 6-7 months later a single calf is born which will stay with its mother for 4-6 months.
Spotted hyena, also known as the ‘laughing hyena’ seem to get a bad rap like most scavengers. However I think they are adorable, especially the young cubs. And who could resist a pair of spotted hyenas suckling. In fact they may suckle up to 18 months because the adults do not bring food back to regurgitate and often have to scavenge far away from the den. Seen at Kruger National Park South Africa.
Prints available of these cuties and many other South African safari images.
Elephants require on average 50 gallons (192 liters) of water a day. During dry spells when water holes and rivers dry up elephants dig for water in the sand until they reach ground water.
We were in the vehicle sitting on a bridge, thus the green bridge rail, and you can see the elephants sniffing us.
If you look closely there is water in this hole.
