Shutdown at Grand Canyon Day 3

Grand Lodge North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

No one visiting due to the federal government shutdown at Grand Canyon.  It is eerily quiet except for the wind in the tree tops.

This morning the parking lot was almost empty.  Visitors still had until noon to leave.  Campers had been told they had to stay in camp or leave.  I miss the amazed looks of people from around the world seeing Grand Canyon for their first time.  And even their second or twentieth.  I never tire of looking into the canyon.

Cabins being cleaned North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Cabins were being cleaned for perhaps the last time until next year.  The North Rim cabins typically close after October 15th but it doesn’t look like they’ll make it due to the shutdown.  The North Rim would typically attempt to stay open for at least day use until December 1st, unless the snow flies first.  Then reopen May 15th, still weather dependent.

And surprise, no hiking on trails.  All trailheads were barricaded.  Plus the scenic drive was closed.  These closures extend to visitors and staff, furloughed or not.  With very limited ‘essential’ personnel safety issues are being taken into consideration.

This US government shutdown effects Federal lands, and not all because there’s too many access points to many National Forests and Bureau of Land Management lands, but not State, County or City parks.  Of course the shutdown also effects all surrounding community businesses and all the people that had planned to visit during this time.

Where did everybody go?

Just like you, I am still waiting to hear if the US government will reopen along with the National Parks.  Please let your representatives know how you feel about the shutdown.  www.whoismyrepresentative.com/

Dressing for fall on the North Kaibab Forest

Fall aspen Kaibab National Forest Arizona

The North Kaibab Forest is dressing in fall colors for the Autumnal equinox.

Red aspen leaf against the green Kaibab National Forest Arizona

I went out into the forest to break in the new tires and check out the fall colors. There’s a lot of dulling down and dropping off. Along with some brilliant golds and tiny splashes of a deep brick-red veined with yellow-green. The sunlight sure causes those aspen to glow no matter what color or season.

Coyote on meadow North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Besides a pair of coyotes who never wanted to get close to each other, and the multitude of ravens eating bugs in the meadows probably off the bison poop, I saw two grouse, one doe who crossed the road between myself and another car who also saw her, a hawk, kettling vultures and some bluebirds.  Grouse are also called foolhens.  I wonder if that has anything to do with them just standing on the side of the road watching you go by.

The Autumnal equinox marks the beginning of fall, a day when day and night are the same length putting the world into balance.  Perhaps a good day to put your own world into balance.

A time for harvesting the bounty and preparing for the upcoming winter could also be a time for your inner harvest like looking at all the achievements and experiences felt during the past seasons.

If I didn’t have to be in uniform today I would dress with colored leaves in my hair tying boughs to waist, arms and legs.  Then go out in the forest and dance in wild abandon with the aspen to welcome in fall.

Ronnies Sex Shop, not what you think

Ronnies Sex Shop Route 62 Barrydale South Africa

Visited Ronnies Sex Shop in South Africa and all I got was a t-shirt.

And a photo of Ronnie, a happy guy who drinks for a living.

Located along a lonely stretch of famous highway in the Little Karoo, Route 62 offers a wide variety of scenes and activities including a stop at the well known Ronnies Sex Shop.

Roadkill Cafe at Ronnies Sex Shop Route 62 Barrydale South Africa

When Ronnie painted his building a fresh coat of white with red letters his intention was to open a farm stall to sell produce and fruit with the name ‘Ronnies Shop.’  Friends of his added the ‘Sex’ part as a joke and although Ronnie wasn’t happy about it at first he later took friends’ advice and opened a bar where a little food is also served.

Although it may look like you pay with underwear all these garments were a donation.  I didn’t leave anything behind except a Junior Ranger Badge from Grand Canyon.

Had I realized Ronnies was just down the road from Warmwaterberg Spa where I was staying I’d have dropped in one evening.  And even though I’m not much of a drinker this would be a great place to hang out with the locals sitting on the rooftop while enjoying a sunset.  Plus Ronnie is full of stories.

I bought the pink t-shirt

You probably won’t get laid here, but how about a cold beer.  Or a t-shirt.

I highly recommend stopping at Ronnies Sex Shop if you’re driving the R62 between Barrydale and Ladismith in South Africa.  And tell Ronnie ‘Hi’ and I’ll be back.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
