Cruising the Kaibab for Autumn color

Fall aspen SR67 Kaibab National Forest ArizonaFriday, on one of my day’s off, I decided to cruise the Kaibab for autumn color.

Fall aspen and evergreens along meadow Kaibab National Forest ArizonaAlong the meadows and hillsides the aspen are changing.  The sun played hide and seek with clouds cruising across the sky.  Like a naughty child playing with a light switch the leaves took on an electric neon brilliance and then an after glow.  Every time I stopped for sunglow it went away before I could adjust the camera.

Fall aspen Kaibab National Forest ArizonaRainbows of warm colors contrasted with greens.  Saw turkeys on the road and startled several deer.

Rainy view South from Parissawampitts Point Kaibab National Forest ArizonaAfter several hours of mesmerizing drive I reached Parissawampitts Point with an outstanding view south across Grand Canyon and watched the rain headed my way.  Which was a sign to turn around and head home once again through the splashes of color.

Rainbow and fall aspen Kaibab National Forest ArizonaThough only a little rain fell I was blessed with a rainbow gift.

Fall aspen reflected in puddle Kaibab National Forest ArizonaI must have missed the bulk of the rain because I did find puddles.

Dressing for fall on the North Kaibab Forest

Fall aspen Kaibab National Forest Arizona

The North Kaibab Forest is dressing in fall colors for the Autumnal equinox.

Red aspen leaf against the green Kaibab National Forest Arizona

I went out into the forest to break in the new tires and check out the fall colors. There’s a lot of dulling down and dropping off. Along with some brilliant golds and tiny splashes of a deep brick-red veined with yellow-green. The sunlight sure causes those aspen to glow no matter what color or season.

Coyote on meadow North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Besides a pair of coyotes who never wanted to get close to each other, and the multitude of ravens eating bugs in the meadows probably off the bison poop, I saw two grouse, one doe who crossed the road between myself and another car who also saw her, a hawk, kettling vultures and some bluebirds.  Grouse are also called foolhens.  I wonder if that has anything to do with them just standing on the side of the road watching you go by.

The Autumnal equinox marks the beginning of fall, a day when day and night are the same length putting the world into balance.  Perhaps a good day to put your own world into balance.

A time for harvesting the bounty and preparing for the upcoming winter could also be a time for your inner harvest like looking at all the achievements and experiences felt during the past seasons.

If I didn’t have to be in uniform today I would dress with colored leaves in my hair tying boughs to waist, arms and legs.  Then go out in the forest and dance in wild abandon with the aspen to welcome in fall.

Fall in the air

01 Fall colors from airplane (768x1024)

Actually, fall from the air.  Not sure where I was flying over when the colors caught my eye.  At first I thought it was rock, then realized fall colors dot the land.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
