I’ve been sick

I’ve been sick, and had company.  Not the best of combinations.  But I’ve still tried to get out and enjoy life.

Sick has been a bout of diverticulitis so my gut pains me especially in the mornings.  Sorry if that’s TMI.  Thank goodness for the modern miracle of antibiotics.  Even if that means a long 85 mile drive to the nearest pharmacist.  Plus numerous bowls of soup and enough water to drown a camel.

Yet I may survive to share more stories soon.  In the meantime, enjoy these images from touring friends out to Point Sublime via the wildflowers of Big Basin.

Camping at Point Sublime Grand Canyon

Point Sublime Road North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

The first time I drove this horrendous road I wasn’t prepared to stay overnight but this time I got my permit for camping at Point Sublime Grand Canyon National Park North Rim.

Campsite at Point Sublime North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

There are two campsites available by permit from Grand Canyon National Park and I arrived early enough to get the east rim view.  Each site has a picnic table plus there’s a compost toilet, but no water.  Bring more water than you think is needed especially during the heat of summer.  There’s a limited amount of shade.

It’s less than a mile walk from camp to the very end of the point which offers Grand Canyon views from east to west, including a section of the Colorado River at Crystal Rapid.

Plus there’s a picnic table for those day-trip lunches.

And going like I did during early summer means the sweet scent of flowering Cliff Rose.

Sunset from Point Sublime North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Best part about camping here is getting to see the canyon from sunrise—which I woke up for but went right back to sleep—through sunset.

But I did get out to the point with my morning coffee.

Then came back to camp for breakfast.

And even if there’s no clouds to help color the sky, watching the light and shadow play constantly change the colors on the canyon walls is sublime.

Trail to Point Sublime North Rim Grand Canyon National Park

The short trail to the actual point can be just a bit tricky so use caution.

Watch for the fast and flighty plateau lizards.

And even faster and flightier swallows as they whiz by.  Very surprised I caught one sitting still long enough for several photos.

Well shit, all too soon it was time to leave.

Driving to Point Sublime

01 Sign for Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

I’ve explained to many visitors that the 18-mile gravel road to Point Sublime requires at least a high clearance vehicle, maybe 4×4, and if they question the conditions, turn around.  Yet I’d never been there.

02 Side mirror view of log by truck Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

I own a Big 1-ton 4×4 pickup that hadn’t been christened with Arizona pin striping from brush and branch.

03 Puddle Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

So I figured twas time to get this big girl down and dirty.

04 Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

After several miles of rough and rocky tear-the-steering-wheel-out-of-you-hands road the forest opened.

05 Flowers in meadow along Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x279)

And this glorious flower filled meadow known as the Basin stretched ahead.

Of course I had to stop for some photos.

07 Point Sublime Rd NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

Then continued on winding through the forest on this hairy, scary, exhilarating and challenging road.

When I saw a pull out with canyon views I gladly stopped.

This plateau lizard greeted me.

And I sat down on a rock to absorbed the canyon.

Yet as I looked out and then examined the map I realized I was looking down the Crystal Creek drainage.

Oh to fly like these Peregrine falcons.

So I continued another several miles driving to Point Sublime, the real destination.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
