Foto Friday Fun 67

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives offering a nice balance between Arizona and South Africa.  Thanks for the memories.

01 DSC_2807 Fire truck 4th of July parade NR GRCA NP AZ fff67 (1024x678)Jo chose #2807, “which is the date we actually leave site now.”  That’s cause for celebration!  And this fire truck was in the North Rim’s 4th of July celebration water parade.

02 DSC_5935 Sunset over Indian Ocean Tsitsikamma NP SA fff67 (1024x658)Jonker chose #5935 and I know he loves Tsitsikamma National Park as much as I do.  Of course he also lives closer to it than I and gets to see sunset over the Indian Ocean whenever he wants to.

03 DSC_0710 Guy in bucket on APS truck Yarnell AZ fff67 (1024x678)Yogi chose #711, “cause that will be the date next Friday.”  He works in gas and this is a guy from our electric company.  Is there much difference?  This guy was cutting big limbs off a tree killed from the Yarnell fire in my back yard before it was taken down.  Oh how I wanted to go up that bucket.  Can you imagine the view?

04 DSC_9399 Augrabies Falls NP SA fff67 (1024x678)Diane chose #9399 where we see the mighty flow of a swollen Orange River at Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa where I celebrated my 60th birthday.

05 DSC_0521 Hippo Pilanesberg GR SA fff67 (1024x475)Melissa chose #521.  Hippos hang out in water all day staying cool and out of the mid-day sun.  It’s not easy to keep track of how many because they can stay under water around 5 minutes then only show eyes and nostrils when they emerge.  How many can you count?  I saw this group in the Mandwe Dam in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa.

06 DSC_0356 Young Zebra Pilanesberg GR SA fff67 (1024x795)Elaine chose #356 for the record breaking 3.56 inches of rainfall in June where she lives in Alaska.  An unusually high March rainfall in Pilanesberg Game Reserve helped the grasses grow tall to feed young animals like this zebra.

07 DSC_2994 Uncle Sam sprays the crowd 4th of July Parade NR GRCA NP AZ fff67 (1024x746)My choice this week from the North Rim’s annual 4th of July water parade.  Uncle Sam got into the spirit spraying the crowd.  How do you like this ride?

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun where readers choose a number from my archives and I share the corresponding photo and a story.   To join in the fun for

Foto Friday Fun 66

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives plus photos from my last week around Grand Canyon.

01 DSC_2345 Last light on temples NR GRCA NP AZ fff66 (1024x669)Jonker chose #2345.  Wish I could teleport him, and his family, to see the Grand Canyon in real time.  But until that happens hope he can be satisfied with views like this last light seen on the Brahama and Zoroaster temples at sunset from the North Rim taken last week.

02 345 Old Franklin in parking lot NR GRCA NP AZ fff66 (1024x678)Sherry chose #345.  I’m betting during her travels through all parks, National, State and County she’s seen a few gatherings of classic car buffs.  Every summer at the North Rim a couple of different clubs show up and it’s really like a step back in time.  During June, 2012 a group of Franklin owners from all over the US stopped at Grand Canyon along their National Parks pilgrimage.

03 a3007 Carved room door at TeTeMuka B&B Lodge Kokstad KwaZulu-Natal SA fff66 (691x1024)Jo chose #3007, “which is 30 July, the day we fly home on leave.”  ‘Home’ for her is South Africa where this marvelously carved door of a buffalo adorned my private room at TeTeMuka Bed and Breakfast in Kokstad.

04 DSC_1200 Toroweap view E GRCA NP AZ fff66 (642x1024)Elaine chose #1200, “as I just spent some time at the midnight hour taking photos of a rainbow.”  And they are stunning photos!  As is this amazing view upstream of the Colorado River and Grand Canyon from Toroweap overlook.  A rainbow would simply put this over the top.

05 3999 GRSE from SR89A N AZ fff66 (1024x768)Diane chose #3999 for my, “last number backwards.”  She has just returned from a journey through Spain and Portugal which I’m looking forward to seeing.  Yet I don’t think any of those vista views would look like the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument with its rocky steps of color.

06 832 Dried & curled mud Buckskin Gulch slot canyon N GRSE NM UT fff66 (768x1024)Yogi chose #832, “which is the miles we drove back home Saturday from vacation.”  He and family were at the beach and should be glad all those miles weren’t like the road to Buckskin Gulch slot canyon where I saw this dried and curled mud.  Not the most exciting part of this awesome hike.

I couldn’t decide on just one photo so instead will share what I’ve been doing this week.

07 DSC_2535b Canyon butte & Navajo land from Walhalla Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ fff66 pano (1024x178)Last Friday on a day off I went wandering on the Walhalla Plateau enjoying new views of the Grand Canyon and beyond.

08 DSC_2565 Bison-cattle hybrids on meadows NR GRCA NP AZ fff66 (1024x678)Saturday on my way off the Kaibab Plateau to shop in Kanab, Utah I saw a herd of bison/cattle hybrids.  Of course there was a bison jam of visitors in and out of vehicles.  These cross-breeds don’t belong here and destroy meadows, waterholes and archeology sites.  Not to mention the potential for a traffic accident.  Yet with four government agencies trying to figure out what to do about this over population I figure they’ll be around for a while.

09 DSC_2574 Whirl wind of dust W of Fredonia AZ fff66 (1024x678)Wasn’t my favorite place to be in the valley Saturday shopping.  It’s always at least 30F warmer than the North Rim and dryer than burnt toast.  Watched this dust devil moving soil for at least a couple minutes.

10 DSC_2583 Sunset Grand Lodge Star Party NR GRCA NP AZ fff66 (1024x678)The week long Star Party was a huge success on the North Rim.  Many visitors stood in awe of the Milky Way having never seen it with their naked eyes before.  Astronomers focused on planets, clusters and other astronomical sights.

11 DSC_2649 Monsoon & Oza Butte NR GRCA NP AZ gca fff66 (1024x665)Snow pack was absolutely pathetic on the Kaibab Plateau last winter.  The ground, plants and animals are dry from thirst.  Monsoon brings the much needed summer rains and all rejoice.  The first measurable rain fell on Wednesday.

Table Mountain Cableway

a5061 Portal & cableway Table Mt NP Cape Peninsula ZA to Visit SA pic (1024x756)Table Mountain soars 3,558 feet (1,085 meters) above Cape Town, South Africa and there are two ways to get to the top. Either hike the strenuous Platteklip Gorge trail up 1.86 miles (3 km) or take the cableway. The later was my choice on this foggy day.  Which way would you choose?

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
