Foto Friday Fun 74

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 633, chosen by the first commenter last week.  Please join in with a post and link below with a #633 photo from your archives.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Lunar eclipse Yarnell ArizonaYogi chose #633 so that will be our photo index number for the week.  For me that leads us to the sky for last April’s lunar eclipse.  I actually managed to stay awake taking many photos of the first tetrad and put together a nice series of shots.

Squirrel Jeremy North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaBibi chose #1066, “the date of the Norman Conquest! English got, back then, over 10,000 words from French. Eh, oui.”  In North America many of our words come from the local Natives language then skewed into an English translation.  OK, what does that have to do with this Ranger dressed as the North Rim’s Kaibab squirrel?  “Kaibab” is a Paiute word for mountain lying down, and the adopted name for the plateau and forest here.  This Kaibab squirrely Ranger is our mascot.

Bed & desk in Bessie Johnson's bedroom Scottys Castle Death Valley National Park CaliforniaSherry chose #67 and as a park loving history buff traveling in the west I’m sorry she’s not going as far as Scotty’s Castle in Death Valley National Park.  The Ranger led tour through this innovative dream in a desert was thorough and entertaining including the real owner’s wife Bessie Johnson’s bedroom.  I love the desk drop over the bed idea and Native basket collection.  Maybe next year Sherry?

Fog and snowy view over Transept canyon from RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaElaine chose #815, a white view like she’ll all too soon be seeing at her Alaska home, but without the canyon like I get through my RV/home window.  Yet she’s currently seeing Sandhill cranes nearby so you should check that out.  Thanks for linking in last week Elaine.

Sunrise over Indian Ocean Scottburgh Caravan Park Scottburgh South AfricaDiane chose #5551, and not to make her homesick but this brilliant sunrise was seen over the Indian Ocean at Scottburgh in South Africa.  I was transfixed and took hundreds of images.

Evening Chateau tour Gaelyn with visitors in Coffee Shop Oregon Caves National Monument OregonCatherine chose #13, “my favourite number!”  One of the favorite interpretive programs I created was a living history tour of the Lodge at Oregon Caves National Monument.  Wearing a wig over my long braids I played the part of a 73-year old composite character returning to a place of early employment and sharing stories from her past.  When I pulled that wig off a lot of visitors were shocked.

Virga at sunset from Lodge North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy choice this week from July at Grand Canyon during monsoon season.

I hope you’ll join in with your own #633 photo and story by adding your link below and linking back to Foto Friday Fun 74.  And if not, leave a number between 01 and 9991 in a comment for next week’s Foto Friday Fun.  The first person to comment who is joining in the meme please choose a number for next week.

Foto Friday Fun 73

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 1414, chosen by the first commenter last week.  Please join in with a post and link below with a #1414 indexed photo from your archives.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Brady Peak from Pt Imperial Rd North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaYogi chose #1414, “just cuz.”  When I cruise the overlooks on the North Rim it’s only a 2.6 mile drive off the Walhalla scenic road to Point Imperial so I rush to the end.  But this day I decided to stop on a wide gravel spot, ‘just cuz’ I wanted a different view.  And that’s why I got a shot of Brady Peak instead of the usual Mount Hayden.  Thanks for joining in last week and choosing this week’s Foto Friday Fun number.

Giraffes necking Augrabies Falls National Park South AfricaSherry chose #9555, “for no reason at all.”  Sometimes giraffes neck for no reason at all, but usually it’s a game of dominance between males, or caressing courtship.  I watched, and videoed, these two males’ choreographed necking for quite a while at Augrabies Falls National Park.

Uncle Sam 4th of July parade North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaElaine chose #3113, a special treat to see Uncle Sam at the North Rim’s 4th of July water parade this year.  Thanks for linking in the Foto Friday Fun last week.

Christmas tree on Main Street Disney World Orlando FloridaBibi chose #4, “the total number of grandchildren come February.”  Well the perfect place to take all those kids is Disney World.  I hope to always be a kid and very much enjoyed my third visit there in 2006.

Stairs down Waterfall trail Tsitsikamma National Park South AfricaDiane chose #6661 leading us down just one set of many stairs along the Tsitsikamma Waterfall trail in South Africa.

Derek Hopi Dancer Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJonker chose #5429, “Randomly chosen.”  Nothing random about the dancing of Derek Suwaima-Davis, chosen as a seven time International Hoop Dance champion.  Derek performed at this year’s Native American Heritage Days at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park and seems to get better every year.

Race Track Knoll in Grand Canyon from Jumpup Point Kaibab National Forest Arizona

My choice this week, because I’m still labeling photos from July, when I made the long drive to Jumpup Point and was blown away by the view and palpable silence.  According to the map, this red peaked landmark of Hermit shale is called Race Track Knoll.  Being it’s located on the Esplanade sandstone at least 650 feet (200 meters) below I was in no hurry to race down there.

I hope you’ll join in with your own #1414 photo and story by adding your link below and linking back to Foto Friday Fun 73.  And if not, leave a number between 01 and 9991 in a comment for next week’s Foto Friday Fun.  The first person to comment who is joining in the meme please choose a number for next week.

Foto Friday Fun 72

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 5 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 3847, chosen by the first commenter last week.  Please join in with a post and link below with a #3847 photo from your archives.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Canyon view from Jumpup Point Kaibab National Forest ArizonaYogi chose #3847, “the number that pops in my head.”  No numbers popped into my head as I sat mesmerized by the isolation and palpable silence surrounding Jumpup Point which juts into Grand Canyon.  The drive was long and rough but the views and experience totally worth it.

Hyena Addo Elephant National Park South AfricaSherry chose #7654.  She’s a lover of all things nature so I believe she’d even like the much disliked hyena which I saw at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa.

Sunset & blue wildebeest Pilanesberg Game Reserve South AfricaBibi chose #9876, “because it’s almost like a countdown.”  Watching a sunset is also almost like a countdown.  And the bonus with this sunset at Pilanesberg Game Reserve was the blue wildebeest grazing in the foreground.

Elephants Addo Elephant National Park South AfricaDiane chose #7771 and I know she loves elephants so here’s a heard leaving a waterhole in Addo Elephant National Park South Africa.

Sunset over Transept canyon from RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJonker chose #782  and likes to see all things Grand Canyon so gets my first sunset after arriving in April.  This shot was taken through the window of my 5th-wheel and I just love this view.  But then there’s no bad views of the canyon.

Vishnu Temple in fog from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy choice this week during monsoon when I love to see the fog and clouds drift in and out of the canyon.  Just yesterday I spent hours on the Walhalla Plateau where the Vishnu Temple was revealed.

I hope you’ll join in with your own #3847 photo and story by adding your link below and linking back to Foto Friday Fun 71.  And if not, leave a number between 01 and 9991 in a comment for next week’s Foto Friday Fun.  The first person to comment who is joining in the meme please choose a number for next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…
