Foto Friday Fun 81

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 7 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 6661.  Please join in by digging into your archives and sharing a story.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Old car Western Legends Round Up Kanab UtahDiane chose #6661, which will be next week’s number, and she likes old cars.  I don’t know what this is but maybe she does.  Taken this past August at the Western Legends Round Up in Kanab Utah, complete with cowboy.  I just happened into town that Saturday having completely forgotten about this annual festival.

Crane Lake State Route 67 Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Crane Lake Interpretive sign State Route 67 Kaibab National Forest ArizonaYogi chose #2108 and gets a different lake from his last week picture on the Kaibab National Forest.  Crane Lake has a convenient pullover with an interpretive sign.

Sea of Cortez from road to Porto Cito Baja MexicoBibi chose #46, “the number of years ago I studied in Aix-en-Provence, France.”.  In 2005 I ‘studied’ relaxology along the Sea of Cortez for a month mostly around San Felipe but also took a road trip to Porto Cito on the Baja Mexico.  I traveled with my dear friend Darlene, who I will soon be visiting in the Pacific Northwest.  With winter coming on I would love to be here soaking up the sun once again.

Deer along Rainbow Rim trail to Parissawampitts Point Kaibab National Forest ArizonaSherry chose #8199.  I know she’ll identify with my difficulty capturing these deer that startled me as I began to walk on the Rainbow Rim trail.  They took off in a hurry and my camera settings were not set for being so close.

Fall aspen along SR67 North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaSallie chose #9989, because I’m almost last.  Almost always.”  I’m sure glad I got out several times to shoot the aspen turning colors because now they are almost gone.

Snow outside RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaElaine chose #1145 and this white stuff should look familiar as she’s already looking at much more of it through the windows of her Alaskan home.  This shot was taken in May this year from my RV window just before staff left for lower elevation with warmer temperatures for a campout at Toroweap.

Three Rondavels Mpumalanga South AfricaJonker chose #764, “thanks to closing my eyes and pushing number buttons.” Sure wouldn’t want to close your eyes when visiting the Three Rondavels in the Blyde River Canyon area of South Africa. The shape of these rock monoliths resembles traditional African style houses.

Fall aspen and Brady Peak from Ken Patrick trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy choice this week may be almost the last of the colorful fall aspen.  A photographer friend set me a challenge of finding a place to see both the golden aspen and the canyon.  I’ve looked along the Widforss trail and in several locations from the Ken Patrick trail.  Aspen tend not to grow very close to the rim and the few that do were the last to turn.  I think this is as good as it’s going to get for this year taken from a section of the Ken Patrick trail and looking at Brady Peak.

Foto Friday Fun 80

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 6387.  Please join in by digging into your archives and sharing a story.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Raining in canyon from Grand lodge North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJonker chose #6387, which will be this week’s photo index number.  Taken in August during monsoon season, watching a storm cross the canyon and wondering if we’ll actually get any rain.  I zoomed in on Isis temple through the saddle between Widforss Plateau to the right and Oza Butte to the left.  Mid-afternoon sun highlights the walls of the south rim.  Light and shadow play provide endless changes to the shapes in Grand Canyon.

Restuarant and swim area from Suspension Bridge trail Tsitsikamma National Park South AfricaBibi chose #6060, “like my vision, I think.”  She does have an eagle eye, and that’s the kind of view I got from the Suspension Bridge trail at Tsitsikamma National Park.  This immense and diverse coastal park offers many more trails than I hiked, a swimming beach to the right of the white float in the middle, tidal pools to explore, and this building houses reception, restaurant and shop with souvenirs and a few groceries.  I’ve stayed at nice chalets and camped and hope to go back.

Sunset thru trees from RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaDiane chose #7771 which happens to be one of many shots taken through the RV window at sunset through the trees at the edge of Transept Canyon.  Some nights I’m just too tired to walk to the rim.  But even then, photos never seem to do it justice.

Stairs up Waterfall trail Tsitsikamma National Park South AfricaSherry chose #6753, a place I know she’d enjoy hiking on the Waterfall Trail also at Tsitsikamma National Park.  It proved to be a challenging and wonderful hike, but not for the feint hearted.  This reminds me of a stairway to heaven.

Deer Lake Kaibab National Forest ArizonaYogi chose #1621, or rather random dot org chose it for him.  Because his number is part of a panorama shot I kind of cheated and gave him #1622 instead.  I know he’ll understand.  Besides I didn’t want to show you just a piece of Deer Lake in early June when it was only the size of a large mud puddle.  Monsoon rain brought it up to the next ring-line out from the water.  The lake is fenced to keep cattle and bison-hybrids out while allowing wildlife in.

Hoodoo and shadow closeup in Jericho Canyon from Point Supreme Cedar Breaks National Monument UtahElaine chose #1254 which is a close up of a hoodoo in Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah.  I’m a pareidolia so see a funny face in the shadow.  Do you?

Rain in the canyon from Parissawampitts Point Kaibab National Forest ArizonaMy choices this week, because I couldn’t decide on just one and am catching up through September, includes rain falling in Grand Canyon seen from Paraswampitts Point…

Fall color and canyon from Ken Patrick trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Fall color and canyon from Ken Patrick trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona…and  looking for fall colors on two separate hikes along the Ken Patrick trail.

Foto Friday Fun 79

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 8888.  Please join in by digging into your archives and sharing a story.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Moon over dunes Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park South AfricaBibi chose this week’s #8888 because, “I like how the number looks.”  As I liked how the daytime moon hung over this dune at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa.

Jericho Ridge & Arch Creek Canyon from Sunset View overlook Cedar Breaks National Monument UtahYogi’s #510 comes “from my good friends at Random.org.”  My good shadow friend was enthralled by this view from Sunset overlook into Arch Creek Canyon at Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Blackbacked Jackal Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park South AfricaDiane chose #8881, also from the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, this Blackbacked Jackal looked quite comfortable and in no hurry to get out of the road.

Fiscal shrike Addo Elephant National Park South AfricaSherry chose #7430, “Since it is 7:43 here on the east coast.”  Amazingly enough this shot of a Fiscal Shrike was taken in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa at 7:30 am.  Talk about coincidence.

Landscape East from Tuweep overlook Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaElaine chose #2222 which brings a far off view across the Esplande layer of Grand Canyon from Toroweap.

Roman ruins Frankfurt GermanySallie chose #74 because “I celebrated that birthday in the Yukon Territory this year.  Bill said he would take me to an exotic foreign country to celebrate.”  How about some Roman ruins in Frankfurt Germany for exotic and foreign.  I saw this in 2010 during a long layover on my way to South Africa in 2010.

Lightning over Widforss Plateau thru RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy choice this week is the only successful still shot I have ever captured of lightning, and I took it through the RV window.  I used video for lightning in the past but the stills were very small.  Don’t have a lightning trigger or finger.  Did take about 20 shots with no lightning and this was the second in a double flash.  I’ve heard to watch for lightning on the edges of storms.  I was mostly lucky.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

I am currently…
