This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  I love sharing these memories as photos are drawn up from my past.

Jonker chose #3975 for “my birth date.”  I hope he ate cake on his birthday instead of a millipede like this European Roller seen in Kruger National Park South Africa.

Jo chose #7700, my favorite animal in South Africa.  Parked by a waterhole for any length of time at Addo Elephant National Park and they will come, in herds.  I could watch the social interactions of elephants for hours, days and weeks.

Sherry chose #282 and she’s a history buff so should appreciate seeing ancient pueblo ruins at Walnut Canyon National Monument.

Diane chose #6969 and she likes the little things in nature as much as the big. (You should see some of her photos.)  Joan spotted this Blue-spotted Girdled Lizard while we were photographing proteas along the the road north of George on Montagu Pass.

Elaine chose #3444.  She’s seeing spring flowers around her Alaska home and these spring beauties were a gift from a dear friend several years ago.  I took photos of the daffodils every day from bud to bloom.

Yogi chose #16 because his son just celebrated his 16th birthday.  Could there be a coincidence that this metal wind sculpture has 16 blades.  Saw this at a yard sale, not for sale, in Wickenburg, Arizona.

Bo chose #7606 for the year and month of her 38th anniversary.  Maybe she should think about spending the 40th in South Africa so they can go on safari and see this kind of wildlife at Addo Elephant National Park.

Bibi got to choose #5 in person, because she’s here on the 5th visiting me at Grand Canyon.  And just maybe we’ll get a sunset view similar to this taken from Cape Royal.

My choice this week taken the first evening in June as the last light glowed on the Deva Temple and cast a replica shadow of Angels Gate on the far canyon wall.

Capturing the present for future memories of the past

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  I love sharing these memories as photos are drawn up from my past.

Cheryl chose #421, “It’s the address of the house I grew up in in Indianapolis.”  I also grew up in the Midwest so originally thought that the white barked trees growing in the Southwest were Birch.  However now we both live here so know that these white trees are Aspen.  And in the fall the leaves turn to gold.

Sherry chose #119 and as a hiker I think she’ll appreciate seeing me backpacking in the depths of Grand Canyon.  This was my second rim-to-rim which easier than the first time.  Sure glad I experienced this while I still could.

Bibi chose #523, “today’s date.”  Two weeks from that day’s date she’ll be visiting me at the North Rim.  So very excited and look forward to showing her around.  Of course I wish I could also take her to NOAH Thrift Store because she likes shopping second-hand like I do, but we won’t make it to Prescott, Arizona.  Or to the bottom of Grand Canyon like the previous photo.

Bo chose #1734, “the number of miles between here and home.”  And I’m glad to say she finally made it there.  I could easily call the Drakensburgs home or at least hike there again someday even if I couldn’t live under the grasses like this lizard.

Yogi chose #806, “because that is the time when I looked at the clock.”  I wonder if he tells time with a hour glass filled with fine sand like the stuff at Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Utah.

Diane chose #9696 and this may be something she’s seen at Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa.  I wanted to go up in one REALLY bad, but couldn’t justify the $400 for an hour’s ride.  Maybe somewhere else because hot air ballooning is on my list.

Elaine chose #555 and I’ll bet she’s glad not to be seeing snow around her Alaska home.  Although there’s none on the ground here right now this photo was taken May 24, 2010.  Anything is possible at 8200 feet.

Sallie chose #2614, “because we have plans for that date that I will be blogging about if all goes well.”  I’m still waiting to hear about this and hoping I don’t have to wait geologic time like this this exposure of cliff faces along the road to Toroweap, an iconic view of the Colorado River.

My choice this week picked while labeling photos from the Kgalagadi National Park.  Was rather warm when we arrived and these were the first wildlife seen.  Five lions were resting in the shade of this not overly large bush.

Yogi chose #5999, “I just took your max number and moved the five to the back of the line.”  No going to the back of the line for me while visiting Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa.  I like to be on the rocks and close to the crashing waves.

The Guy chose #7456, “randomly.”  Many of the animals I saw in South Africa like to roll in the mud but I don’t see it smoothing their skin so have to wonder about the benefits of a mud bath.  Yet for this Buffalo the mud may reduce the bugs and feel very cool as it was a little warm in Addo Elephant National Park.

Sherry chose #75 and being she so liked my photo last week with long permed hair I figure she’ll really appreciate this look when Mom gave me my first perm in 1956.  At least those perms aren’t as stinky now as back then.

Diane chose #1915, “my Mum’s year of birth.”  I’m guessing her Mum may have seen these gorgeously green Drakensburg Mountains having originated from Africa.  I so want to hike here again.

Elaine chose #1917, for the date that Denali National Park was established, and she was recently there.  Grand Canyon National Park was established just two years later although it had been a National Monument before that.  This shot was taken during monsoon season in August over Roaring Springs canyon.

Barb chose #139, “my hubby’s and my ages added. Gosh, we’re OLD!”  I don’t think they are old.  But this number brought up an old photo of books on the shelves of my old 5th-wheel.  I believe you can tell a lot about someone from the books on their shelves.  Recognize any of these titles?

Sallie chose #610, for the time her clock said at the time.  She likes the outdoors and birding so I believe she’ll like this variety at my Yarnell feeders.  Top White-crowned sparrow, right Spotted towhee, and male cardinal.

Bibi chose #3910, “which was the street address of my grandmother’s house, where I spent many a happy summer.”  I spent a happy South African summer visiting 10 National Parks with my favorite being Kruger where I saw wild dogs for the first time in my life.  I love their almost calico colors.  This one appeared to have a blind eye but that didn’t slow it down a bit.

MaryBeth chose #8, “the age of my dog Bingo.”  I have to wonder the age of this giant redwood before it fell over exposing a sculptural root wad.  Seen at Redwoods National Park.

Jonker chose #21 as “something straightforward.”  Being evacuated was not straightforward but stressful, confusing and disorganized.  When 1996 winter flooding created an island washing out roads in the Gifford Pinchot forest where I lived as a volunteer along with others we were all helicoptered out to safety.  The helicopter part was awesome.

My choice this week taken the second day open at the North Rim while I enjoyed an evening getting to know blogger Bo who knows two other bloggers I know.  It was a gorgeous sunset that all my photos of are blurry.  But I’m sure there will be more to come because, Rangers get paid in sunsets.
