This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 13 readers beginning with panoramas and Grand Canyon, an unusual sky phenomenon beyond sunsets, northern Arizona red rock, fossils, and flowers.

Diane and Nigel chose #104, a panorama.  Towards the end of my first season as a Park Ranger at the North Rim Grand Canyon I took a 5 1/2 hour mule ride seven miles down and back on the North Kaibab trail.  I’d hiked that trail once so had an idea what I was getting into.  We rode to the scene in this image of Roaring Springs and then back.  Mules are wide and my butt hurt.  I’d rather hike it.

Cathy chose #2468.  She might recognize this Grand Canyon cliff face seen across from the Tuweep overlook on the North Rim.

Jennifer chose #9012, a panorama.  Sunset from the lodge on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.  Rangers get paid in sunsets.

Gypsy chose #2821.  An unusual phenomenon called a glory, or brocken-spectre, occurs when sun shines from above on water drops in clouds.  That’s my silhouette seen below Angels Window overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.

Wanda chose #4499.  A sunset birthday gift over Walker Bay after a full day of shopping and exploring in Hermanus, South Africa in 2010.

Jo chose #1145, the time she typed her last comment.  Time before that she said how much she liked the desert plants.  That’s good, because this week she gets a Prickly Pear cactus seen near my Yarnell, Arizona home during March 2012.

Doris chose #9531.  Because of the rare desert aquatic life found in this pool below The Wave, Bill walked the sandstone wall to stay out of the water.

Sue chose #1997 for the year she hauled a friend’s 5th-wheel over Comb Ridge (featured last week).  Turns out the summer of 1997 is when I began selling at flea markets and this is my first set up in Carson, Washington.

Rita chose #2174.  A sandstone Toadstool at White Pocket in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona.

Sherry chose #8177, “for the scores in the NCAA basketball final 4 game…”  You’d want to be mighty careful playing basketball at the Grand Canyon where Hopi House is seen on the South Rim.  And for this shot, I was there for my 2015 birthday.

Alan let random dot org choose #5723.  Wonder if there are that many shell fossils in this shot from the Mzamba site at Wild Coast Sun in South Africa.

Jeff chose #141, “for the combined points in the NCAA men’s final.”  Was he watching the same game as Sherry?  I was watching for visitors to enter the second side of Balcony House from behind and beyond this two-room structure.  Taken while giving a tour working at Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado summer of 2005.

Sallie and Bill chose #742.  Lone Rock surrounded by the waters of Lake Powell in May 2009.  The water is currently so low that rock is surrounded by dry lakebed.

My choice from April 1975 when Spring tulips grew at friend’s house in Downers Grove Illinois where I grew up.

Rita chose #9494.  My hiking partner Bill headed down the iconic Wave formation, ancient sand dunes turned to stone.

Cathy chose #8591.  A tree full of Vervet monkeys, the most mischievous animal seen in Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa.

Jennifer chose #6565.  This sunset hung above the Indian Ocean in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.

Doris chose #9077.  This sunset was seen from Cape Royal overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.

Alan chose #7905.  Just lion around on the side of the road.  This collared lioness was seen in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa.

Sallie and Bill get #59 for the number of words in their last comment.  That’s little old me at two-years old in 1956, off to see the world.

Diane and Nigel chose #2503.  Even on a cloudy afternoon, sometimes the light shines through.  Seen while camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.

Jo chose #8882.  A pair of Blackbacked Jackals seen at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in her home country of South Africa.

Sandee chose #1313.  Wildlife often uses roads as an open trail like this giraffe seen in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Ray chose #1997.  The golden hour sure accented the Kelso Dunes in Mojave National Preserve, California.

Jeff chose #9008, “the distance in km the Netherlands ASRN rowing team traveled to compete in this weekends Crew Classic.”  Glad I didn’t have to go that distance to hike the Palm Canyon trail in Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, Arizona.

Gypsy chose #38.  A lousy pic of me at one-year old.

Sherry chose #3278.  A wind and water carved limestone bluff seen near the Indian Ocean in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.

Sue chose #2622.  SR95 east in Utah cuts through Comb Ridge, and leads to many awesome red rock sights.

Liberalwarrior chose #1371.  More Utah red rock of a different kind and place.  This is a wall of limestone towering above the Navajo Loop trail in Bryce Canyon seen the first time I hiked it in 2010.

My choice is a recent sunrise (that’s no April Fool’s joke) in the Sonoran Desert of southern Arizona.

Rita chose #4196.  It’s not easy to see an elephant’s eye partially because they are not usually very close while on safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa.  But also because of their delightfully long eyelashes.

Jo chose #2834.  More Jumping Cholla, this time seen in the Mojave Desert in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.

Sallie and Bill chose #1033.  If you’re ever in the area around Kanab, Utah visit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.  Take a tour or volunteer time.  This shot is looking down on one of the many animal cemeteries filled with wind-chimes.

Gypsy chose #19.  Me at three and a half months old and my brother at seven.  Taken in 1954, later scanned, in Hinsdale, Illinois where I was born.

Sue receives #26 for the number of words in her comment.  A commissioned stained glass lamp made in 1980 in Illinois to hang in an entryway of a bi-level house.  Not one of my favorite pieces.

Diane and Nigel chose #1803.  Sunset over the Drakensberg Mountains from Monks Cowl camp in South Africa.

Cathy chose #1939.  Zion National Park is in her backyard.  On this visit with my ex-pat Serbian friend Pat we rode the shuttle up and down canyon and I shot the boon through an open roof vent.

Alan chose #9990.  My RV view over Transept Canyon during a late April storm when I worked at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park in 2015.

Doris chose #5219.  Back to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for a February hike in Palm Canyon.

Sherry chose #3202, a panorama.  She would love to hug this massive Yellow-wood tree I saw in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa in 2010.  It would take all of us to reach around this big tree.
