Native American Heritage Days 2015

Ranger Jake once again organized an impressive and smooth running Native American Heritage Days at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.  Demonstrators from several of the local tribes set up sharing basket making, jewelry making and pottery. Plus some outstanding music and dance.

Stormy sky over canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaDue to threatening skies and wind Thursday evening’s events were brought inside the Lodge auditorium.  Friday the demonstrators came inside also.  I’m not used to taking pictures inside so these aren’t the best quality.

Late light on canyon walls Transept Trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaBill came up for the first day of activities on my day off.  We hiked the 2 miles from my RV to the Lodge along the Transept Trail.  Not too far along near the public campground I saw a couple sitting at a picnic table and heard the woman say, “Isn’t that Bill?” followed by the man saying, “Isn’t that Gaelyn?”  Turned out to be the Carter’s from Kanab who knew us both, just not necessarily together.  Chatted with them a bit then continued along the rim admiring the canyon view.

2013 Native American Heritage Days at North Rim Grand Canyon

OK, you missed Native American Heritage Days again.  I’ve posted about this event several times, but every year brings something a little different.  This event has been held for 20 years during the second week of August.

Zuni potter Eileen Yatsattie Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Several people from tribes affiliated to Grand Canyon came together and shared at this 20th Native American Heritage Days.  Arts and crafts demonstrations took place on the lawn next to the Grand Lodge for two days.  This year, Zuni potter Eileen Yatsattie shared her exquisite pottery and examples of the types of clay used.  Debra Onsae demonstrated Hopi arts and crafts.  Henry and Cody Nez demonstrated their Dine silversmithing skills and showed some gorgeous jewelry, which I refrained from buying.  Representing the Kaibab Paiute, Glendora Homer demonstrated how plants and fibers are used to make cordage.

Hopi Jessica Lomatewama basketry and Ramson Lomatewama glass blower Native American Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Jessica Lomatewama demonstrated Hopi traditional basket weaving.  And in the parking area Ramson Lomatewama demonstrated his blown glass work which I find absolutely amazing as he incorporates old designs with a new art form.

Dine flute player Milton Tso always entertains the crowd with both his music and incredible sense of humor. Plus he got a few kids to help him out as well.

The Cedar Creek Apache crown dancers were a new addition this year.  They impressed all who attended swinging those huge head pieces as though they were lighter than air.

Hopi Derrick Suwaima hoop dancing Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

World Hoop dance champion Derrick Suwaima once again mesmerized the crowd as he energetically added five hoops or more to create a representation of the world and our cultural commonalities.

Havasupai healers White Dove & James Uqualla Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

First time performers at an evening presentation by the Havasupai medical duo James Uqualla and White Dove had people riveted to their seats as they danced, sang and shared stories about the essence of life and being at one with yourself and your environment.

The second night’s entertainment by Curtis Quam and Octavius Seowtewa explained the Zuni emergence and migration history as told by some of the discovered rock art in Grand Canyon.  Unfortunately the slide presentation wasn’t easy to photography.

Every year, people from some of the local affiliated tribes come to the North Rim to share in a cultural celebration at Native American Heritage Days.  I hope you’ll be able to join us next year.

Native American Heritage Days Grand Canyon National Park North Rim

I interact with some of the most awesome people from around the world who come to visit this most amazing place.

After two days of Native American Heritage Days watching so many cultures interact in harmony I went out on the Walhalla Plateau Saturday and heard many visitors still talking about this festival.

The young Jimenez Pueblo brothers captured everyone with their native songs. It made no difference whether we could understand the words because their passion came through.

Ramson glass blowing at Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Ramson is a Hopi artist and educator, a teacher to the youth in his culture. He’s recently introduced a new art to his people, glass blowing. This is no more a “new art” than any other yet he uses the earth’s gift of minerals to create representations of marks made on the rocks by his ancestors.

Ramson's evening program Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Friday night Ramson spoke about his  Hopi culture. The audience was riveted. He said, “every culture has its own myth which is the collective truth of the people. If you are comfortable with your myth there is no need to convert others, just let them live their own way.”

Debra is a Hopi educator teaching in the Flagstaff school system. She also teaches young girls important lessons to carry on their cultural traditions.

First Attendant & Miss Hopi Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

She chaperoned this year’s Miss Hopi and her First attendant to our festival sharing stories and explaining the corn grinding ceremony.

If only more people could live in harmony with the land and themselves. Maybe if we try what I saw on a T-shirt, “Don’t worry, be Hopi”

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
