Foto Friday Fun 17

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 11 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Weighing in pretty heavy with South Africa.  Maybe that’s because I’ve been sending out the SA vibes for this winter’s journey.

Valley view from Swartberg Pass South Africa

Rick chose #2706, “It is my street address from my family’s home for 50+ years.  It is one of those numbers I’ll never forget.”  And I’ll never forget the almost endless views from Swartberg Pass in South Africa.

Turkey vultures soaring over Weaver Mts Yarnell Arizona

Firefly chose #1234 as a random number.  Well turkey vultures soar more than randomly over the Weaver Mountains, whether they’re burned or not.  I look forward to hiking there again in the spring when new growth returns through the ashes.

Succulent garden at Ganora Guestfarm sheep ranch Nieu-Bethesda Great Karoo South Africa

Sherry chose #2174.  Although she’s been enjoying the lush forests of Maine I think she’ll also like this sweet little garden of succulents on the front porch at Ganora Guestfarm in South Africa.  BTW, thanks for the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse.

Sunrise over waves & dolphins at Tsitsikamma National Park Storms River Mouth South Africa

Melissa chose #1960, “The year I was born.”  This sunrise showed the birth of a new day with the added excitement of dolphins while I visited Tsitsikamma National Park at Storms River Mouth South Africa.

Eroded sandstone on hillside in side canyon of Cottonwood Canyon Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Utah

Mary Beth also chose #1234, “because it is all in a row—like my ducks should be.”  No ducks seen around these sandstone cliffs in a side canyon of Cottonwood Canyon in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Utah.  But if you look closely, the rock might in the middle sort of reminds me of a short-billed duck.  Smile

De Beers Hermanus Western Cape South Africa

Diane chose #2 911, for two of her second favorite model of Porsche.  Being she has such expensive tastes and is originally from South Africa I’m sure she’ll appreciate this photo.  I actually went in feeling safe as I’m not a diamond fan, but, it was my birthday.

Wine glass at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Elaine chose #1001, “for the 1001 Arabian Night Stories, as you weave for us the stories of your travels through life.”  Well maybe the reason I weave has to do with it not taking much wine for me to feel tipsy.  But I just couldn’t resist a nip with lunch at Storms River Mouth, Tsitsikamma National Park in South Africa.  Very good wine produced there.

View SE from Crazy Jug Point Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Teri chose #1118, “my birthday Nov 18.”  Don’t suppose I’ll ever celebrate my end of March birthday, or hers, at Crazy Jug Point in the Kaibab National Forest on the North Rim because of the possibility of snow.  But it is one of my favorite canyon viewpoints during the summer.

Mercat at Addo Elephant National Park South Africa

Arija chose #3333, “for no reason at all, just because.”  This meerkat  had very good reason to act as sentry for the mob because there could be predators about in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa.

View from Gydo Pass above Prince Albert's Hamelet South Africa

Bibi chose #3910, “the number of my grandmother’s house where I spent many happy years.”  I could spend many happy years enjoying this view from Gydo Pass above Prince Albert’s Hamelet in South Africa.  The only problem would be in the winter when snow covers the peaks.

Seagull at Tsitsikamma National Park Storms River Mouth South Africa

Kathie chose #2145, “the street number of a house I use to live in in Colorado.”  She is an avid birder so I’m sure will enjoy this seagull from Tsitsikamma National Park.  Maybe I’ll even get an ID.

Classic cars at North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

My choice for this week was taken yesterday at the canyon although these classics are from another age.

Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun. It’s been a real trip to dig through my archives and pull the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 1000 and 5000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Sifting through the ashes Yarnell fire

Cleanup area Yarnell Arizona

Yavapai County is offering a lot of help for residents to clean up after the Yarnell fire.  For us uninsured renters they will scoop up the mess and haul it away.

Burnt shed Yarnell Arizona

I asked to have the tin storage shed lifted off the ash pile and that’s exactly what they did.  Plus took the crispy water heater and a little bit more.

shed removal Yarnell Arizona

These folks really know what they’re doing.  After making a pile of twisted tin the two dozers faced off and mushed it into one bucket.  I even took video, but probably won’t take the time to post it.

Ashes from the shed Yarnell Arizona

Much easier to get into the ashes with the shovel to sift for possible treasures.

Gaelyn by the shed Yarnell Arizona

So in my big clompy boots, work gloves, bandana and dust mask I started to sift.

Wagon full of melted stuff Yarnell Arizona

Really anything that survived in any melted form is worth saving to me.  Thinking of a Yarnell fire memorial garden, maybe right where the shed stood.

Diamond ring Yarnell Arizona

And low and behold I found my diamond ring showing the brightest and cleanest diamond with the gold band covered in gray scale.  This is the second time I’ve lost and found this ring.

So I ended my dirty sifting job for the afternoon and took a slow ride through the neighborhood in shock.

Melted trash can Yarnell Arizona

The strangeness of it all is still overwhelming.

Weaver Mts Yarnell Arizona

Life on the mountains will return.

Cardinal Yarnell Arizona

The birds are here.

Foto Friday Fun 15

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Back to South Africa for this series of photos.

Nqweba Dam Camdeboo National Park Eastern Cape Graaff-Reinet South Africa

Diane is still working on Porsche models so chose #2 356, her favourite times two.  Being she’s from South Africa originally  I wonder if she’s been to Camdeboo National Park near Graaff-Reinet where even under stormy skies the Nqweba Dam showed a few birds, unfortunately not in this photo.

View from loop drive Golden Gate Highlands National Park R712 Free State South Africa

Sherry chose 2046 which keeps us in South Africa but this time at Golden Gate Highlands National Park where the views were simply spectacular.

Kudus Mountain Zebra National Park Eastern Cape South Africa

Firefly chose 2695 as a random number picked by a colleague.  He may have visited Mountain Zebra National Park not too far from his home and I’m sure has seen Kudus somewhere.

Dam above waterfall along loop drive Golden Gate Highlands National Park R712 Free State South Africa

Erin chose 2012, “because it was the year we both retired from the workforce and began fulltiming in our motorhome.”  Still at Golden Gate, I’m thinking this would be a great place to RV and spend more time hiking.

Swartberg Pass South Africa

MaryBeth chose 2911, “when i met Bob.”  This shows some of the mountains I met in South Africa.  Swartberg Pass in fact was one of the first mountain passes I tackled.

Kudu Addo Elephant National Park South Africa

Barb chose #2999, “just because.”  Her choice takes us to yet another national park in South Africa, Addo Elephant.  And this is another Kudu.

Waterfall Golden Gate Highlands National Park R712 Free State South Africa

Bibi chose #2005, “the year I began and completed chemo?  Not a happy period, but I’m still here, so I can’t complain.”  I have total respect for anyone who has survived chemo.  For you this week, a waterfall at Golden Gate Highlands.

Along the wash Yarnell Arizona

My pick is the wash next to my Yarnell home as I remember its lush green. It doesn’t look like that right now after the fire but will return.

Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun. It’s been a real trip to dig through my archives and pull the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 4000 and 5000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
