Foto Friday Fun 20

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Heavy on images from Grand Canyon.  No surprise after working here for six summers.

View SE from Crystal Creek overlook Point Sublime Rd North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Jo chose #777 because “it was a hymn my dad loved to get us to sing when he lead our Sunday School in the mid-sixties.”  You wouldn’t want to hear me sing but if I could a hymn would be appropriate over this inspiring view of Grand Canyon from Crystal Creek overlook on my way to Point Sublime.

Old rusty car Weaver Mts Yarnell Arizona

Diane, in keeping with her Porsche theme, chose #918.  She can’t remember for sure if she’s chosen this number before and I’m not sure I haven’t shown this photo of a rusty old car that used to sit up in the Weaver Mountains before the Yarnell Fire.  I’m now putting a label on the photos shown for Foto Friday Fun so I can try not to repeat them.  But no guarantees.

Rain on the Weaver Mts from Iron Springs Rd Arizona

Sherry chose #278, “the only numbers that aren’t zeros in my daughter’s birthdata.”  Well she’s been experiencing a little rain lately in Acadia, Maine so this type of view may look familiar.  Except that this rain fell on the Weaver Mountains.  (I actually submitted this photo to Arizona Highways Friday Theme of Horizons on Facebook for this week.)

Watercolor of ocean

Bibi chose #66, “for Route 66!”  She may have been motivated by last week’s photo of a drawing I did with models wearing bell bottoms.  This week she gets another art project from when I tried to learn watercolor painting in 1988.  Not one of my better attempts.

Sunset over the canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Mary Beth chose #200, just because.  She gets a cloudy and colorful sunset over the Grand Canyon.  Once again, Rangers get paid in sunsets.

Dragonfly along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Elaine chose #1952 when “I would have been at the top of my baking career right about then.”  Growing up in Oregon she used to decorate mud pies with tiger lilies, her image choice from last week.  Personally I think a dragonfly would also make a great topper for mud pies.  This one, however, was seen on grasses along the Echo Ravine trail at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.

Reproduction of GEM cataract boat South Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Firefly chose #762.  That number turn out to be this reproduction of the GEM cataract boat I saw at Grand Canyon South Rim with the Historical Society.  I find it interesting that two more reproduction boats from the 1869 Powell expedition launched last week on the Colorado River being filmed by the BBC.  And my boss is on that river trip.  I am only a little jealous.

My choice this week is of the Kanab Symphony playing a jazzy rendition of Amazing Grace—one of my favorite songs in any rendition–with the canyon as a back drop.  I’ve waited six seasons to hear them play and finally got my chance.  I hope you enjoy this brief video.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 200 and 2000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Which one is your favorite from this week?

Foto Friday Fun 19

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 10 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Just a few real oldies this week along with several more recent memories from the North Rim of Grand Canyon.

Baboons Drakensburg hike KwaZulu-Natal South Africa

Jo chose #10, “It’s the age of our oldest granddaughter, Eryn.”  I met Eryn while camping at Monks Cowl in the Drakensburg when she was seven.  Jo’s son John, father to Eryn, guided me on a hike into the Draks where we saw these baboons watching us on the way back from our overnight up in the lush green mountains.

Western Art Show Founder's Day Window display Tonasket Washington 1984

Elaine chose #68, “Having just had another birthday roll around, I’ll go with my age this time.”  Happy belated Birthday young woman.  This crazy quilt was made way before our time and the owner graciously allowed me to display it in my store for the Western Art Show held during the town’s Founder’s Day 1984.  Sorry for the awful quality of this pre-digital photo.

Colored pencil Downers Grove Illinois 1971

Bibi chose #55, “the first two digits of my social security number.”  Which only tells me she wasn’t born in the mid-west but probably in the western US.  Yet I believe we are similar in age so think she will identify with this piece of my high school art from 1971.  Remember those bell-bottom pants?

Snow & fall colors Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Diane chose #312, for a “Porsche tractor model.”  Won’t need a tractor for this light dusting of snow seen on the meadows of the Kaibab National Forest just north of the park in early October, 2011.  Winter can begin early at over 8,000 feet (2438 m).

Rainbow over Roaring Springs Canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Arija chose #180, “the street number of our farm. It means that it is 1.8 km from the main road.”  This rainbow over Roaring Springs Canyon seemed only a little over 1.8 km (1.1 mile) from where I stood.  But the pot of gold was way down in the bottom of Grand Canyon.

Inside yurt near Kaibab trailhead North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Sherry chose #432, “for no reason at all.”  Well, there is a very good reason to have a yurt near the North Kaibab trailhead for winter rim-to-rim hikers across Grand Canyon.  What a delight to be off the ground with a wood stove to keep you warm.  This yurt can be reserved by permit from December 1 to April 15.

Vermilion & Echo Cliffs SR89A North Arizona

Mary Beth chose #70, “because that was my LAST birthday.”  I don’t know if that’s how old she was on her last birthday, or when she quit having birthdays.  But I do know she’s getting ready to take a “ROADTRIP!”  I sure would love to think of her cruising north on this highway past the Echo Cliffs and headed for Vermilion Cliffs on her way to see me at the North Rim.

Shaggy Mane mushroom North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Melissa chose #225, “For some unknown reason, maybe the sugar high from lunch, I just did some math! Our choice of 450 photos divided by 2 = 225…  Silly I know!”  No sugar, or any other kind of high, from these delicious Shaggy Mane mushrooms that should be popping up soon here on the North Rim.  What a fun way to pick a number.

Sunset over Transept Canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Firefly chose #137.  This puts us on the Transept Trail for sunset at the North Rim.

Tiger Lily Caves Creek campground Oregon

Sallie also chose #55, “because we will celebrate that wedding anniversary this coming fall.”  I believe she’d enjoy receiving flowers for her anniversary like this Tiger Lily which grew along Caves Creek campground in Oregon where I was the camp hostess in 2007.

Kaibab squirrel at drinking fountain by campfire area North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

My choice this week was a fortunate capture of the infamous Kaibab Squirrel drinking from the water fountain in the campground at the North Rim.

Thank you for joining Foto Friday Fun. It’s always a real treat to dig through my archives and pull the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 100 and 1000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 18

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  With my choice thrown in to the mix it’s a half and half week between Africa and Arizona.

Trail sign along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Elaine chose #1920 in reference to a photo posted last week of a vintage car.  A car from the 20s seems very old yet can’t compare to the age of these towering cliffs at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.  I felt like a speck hiking under their magnificence.

Sunbird along trail Warmwaterberg Spa Barrydale South Africa

Firefly chose #3230, “It was the first four digits of my phone number growing up.”  I wished for a smart phone with an app to call this sweet little Sunbird in a little closer while hiking at Warmwaterberg Spa in Barrydale, South Africa.

Camel sculpture at Owl House Nieu-Bethesda Great Karoo South Africa

Melissa chose #2112, because she’s been craving music from her younger years and 2112 “is the title of an album by the Canadian rock band Rush released in 1976.”  Maybe this will satisfy a craving for a different kind of artistic endeavor from the Owl House in South Africa.

Jacob Lake watch tower SR67 Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Cheryl chose #2002, “the year of my Honda CR-V!”  I know that she recently headed into some smoke in southern Oregon in her RV, not the Honda.  Could be a time when more of us wish for a watch tower like this one near Jacob Lake on the Kaibab National Forest.  Please be careful out there Cheryl.

Weaver Mts near Kirkland Arizona

Sallie chose #4999, “because I want to see what’s almost last.”  No where near last in my archives however one of the last views pre Yarnell Fire of the sparse greenery interspersed with boulders on the Weaver Mountains.

Red Hot Poker along stream Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Diane chose #1901 which I see as 1 901, yet another Porsche model which she’s been consistently choosing.  Along with her love of these cars she also likes to garden and has lived in South Africa where this Red Hot Poker flower grew next to a stream in Golden Gate Highlands National Park.  Not to mention that orange seems a popular color for those old Porsches.

1949 Sing-Away at Grand Lodge North Rim Grand Canyon National Park archives

Arija chose #1949, “the year Australia accepted us, mother and I, as sponsored refugees.”  She has an interesting story to tell,  as most of us do, from a piece of world history.  As I am fascinated by history I’m hoping Arija is writing down her version of this story.  In the meantime I’ll share this image from 1949 (NPS archives not mine) showing a piece of history  from the North Rim when the concession employees would “Sing-away” the guests departing the Grand Canyon Lodge.

Grand Falls Little Colorado River Navajo Reservation Arizona

My choice for the week shows Grand Falls, a 185 foot (56 m) flow of frothy chocolate waters from last week’s monsoon rains.  Formed when lava from a nearby volcanic eruption poured down into the canyon and blocked the river’s course, causing the water to seek a new path around the lava dam until it found its way back down into its original canyon.  Located about 30 miles northeast of Flagstaff, Arizona.  But only if there’s been rain or snow melt otherwise it can be dry.

Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun. It’s been a real trip to dig through my archives and pull the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 50 and 500 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
