Foto Friday Fun 23

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Heavy on Golden Gate Highlands National Park, maybe because as it gets closer to the end of my season at Grand Canyon I’m dreaming and planning for my 2014 journey back to South Africa, and this time to share this amazing place with a couple of friends.  More about that coming up as the plot thickens.

Everlasting along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa
1989 Everlasting along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Yogi chose #1989 as the year he was married to Sweetie.  Sure hope he remembers to give her flowers on their anniversary.  These everlasting flowers were growing along the Echo Ravine trail in Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.  They look like the strawflowers I’ve seen in the states.

Unidentified flower along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa
1999 Unidentified flower along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Jo chose #1999, “being a terrible year in my life. Thank God I need never go back there and I believe you will come up with a wonderful photo bearing that number.”  So to help her forget the terrible I share this delicate lavender flower found along the same trail as above in Golden Gate Highlands National Park.  Maybe she’ll even be able to identify it for me.

Granite Mountain from Granite Basin Road Prescott National Forest Prescott Arizona
95 Granite Mountain from Granite Basin Road Prescott National Forest Prescott Arizona

MaryBeth chose #95, “the age my Mother was when she went on her final journey.”  This from the road on my last journey to Granite Mountain in Prescott, Arizona before the big fire up there.

1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra Jet from net
1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra Jet

Sherry chose #1968, “the year this Ohio girl first saw the Atlantic Ocean.  It was love at first sight.  I never returned to Ohio.”  My love at first sight was my third car as a teenager.  This 1968 Mercury Cyclone Cobra Jet with a 428 under the hood scoop was the fastest girl-car in high school. (Not my photo, I stole it from the Internet long ago.)

Cormorants below Suspension Bridge trail at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa
1943 Cormorants below Suspension Bridge trail at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Diane chose #1943, “the year I was born.”  Being she has lived in South Africa, and camped at Tsitsikamma National Park, I thought she’d enjoy these Cormorants hanging out below the Suspension Bridge trail at Storms River Mouth.

Fall colors in 2006 Warm fire Kaibab National Forest Arizona
1996 Fall colors in 2006 Warm fire SR67 Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Bibi chose #1996, “which will be my number of posts on that day.”  Well that’s today and I am majorly impressed with that many posts.  Thought I was doing pretty good at 1284 with this one after almost five years of blogging.  Her number shows the beginnings of fall color along the edge of the 2006 Warm Fire along SR67 in the Kaibab National Forest.  I can feel fall approaching again.

Storm clouds over Echo Cliffs SR89 Arizona
311 Storm clouds over Echo Cliffs SR89 Arizona

Sallie chose #311, “Because that’s what the clock on my computer says at this exact moment.”  It was an hour and 10 minutes later than that last August when I took this photo of storm clouds building up over Echo Cliffs from SR89A.  A little bonus is the Native American stand, one of many, found along the highway on the Navajo Reservation.

Sunset over Brahma temple from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Sunset over Brahma temple from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

My choice this week from the last time I’ll see the sunset from Cape Royal this season.   Part of the scenic road on the North Rim was closed September 3rd for repaving.  The night before that I rushed out there after work to catch my last one until next year.  Of course there are other locations to watch a glorious sunset over Grand Canyon.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  In a couple weeks I’d like to change it up and post a number for you to choose a photo from your archives along with a little story to share here.  More about this next week.  In the meantime, for next week leave a number between 1 and 500 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Which one is your favorite from this week?

Foto Friday Fun 22

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  I’m no whiz at numbers but what do you suppose the probability of three readers choosing the same number, 666, unless the devil made them do it?

View northwest from Mohave Point Hermit Road South Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
666 View NW from Mohave Pt Hermit Rd South Rim Grand Canyon NP, AZ taken 1/29/12

Diane was the first to choose #666 just off the top of her head.  This view of Grand Canyon is from the top looking at Mohave Point overlook along the Hermit Road on the South Rim.

Bed & desk in Bessie Johnson's bedroom Scottys Castle Death Valley National Park California
67 Bed & desk in Bessie Johnson’s bedroom Scottys Castle Death Valley NP CA taken 11/1/09

Sherry chose #67.  I know she likes to visit historic houses so believe she will enjoy this room view at Scotty’s Caste in Death Valley National Park.  Because Bessie Johnson spent a lot of time in her bed this custom drop down desk top worked well for her plus she could enjoy her basket collection.  The entire estate is filled with brilliant innovations and energy saving devices.

Carved walking sticks for sale at Gold Rush Days Wickenburg Arizona 2012
666 Carved walking sticks for sale at Gold Rush Days Wickenburg Arizona taken 2/19/12

Yogi also chose #666, “because that is one of my favorite non prime numbers.”  But I also suspect there’s a little devilishness to him as well.  I think the faces on these hand-carved walking sticks may look a little mischievous.  How would you describe them?  The sticks were lined up and ready for use at Wickenburg Gold Rush Days.

Full moon rising over Cedar Mountain from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
777 Full moon rising over Cedar Mt from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon NP AZ taken 5/24/13

Cheryl chose #777, “since I’m boondocking at a casino.”  Hope she’s having as much luck there as I did watching the full moon rise directly over Cedar Mountain from Cape Royal on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  Just one of many perks working here.

Snowy landscape Yarnell Arizona
999 Snowy landscape Yarnell AZ taken 12/30/12

MaryBeth chose #999, “just because it is one super cool number.”  (Are we seeing a pattern here?)  This kind of snowy landscape at my winter home in Yarnell is super, yet I’m glad it doesn’t typically last very long because I’m more into ‘cool’ than cold.

Raven in snag from Cape Royal trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
666 Raven in snag from Cape Royal trail North Rim Grand Canyon NP AZ taken 10/20/12

Bibi chose #666 admitting, “I’m feeling devilish.”  And now has me totally wondering about my readers.  Winking smile  Some people equate Raven to the devil.  I see them as a most awesomely smart bird.  Did you know that ravens can identify humans as individuals?  Better treat them nice, or cover your windshield.

Partial solar eclipse North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
13 Partial solar eclipse North Rim Grand Canyon NP AZ taken 5/20/12

Sandee chose “MY lucky #13!!”  I felt more than lucky capturing images of a solar eclipse as a newbie to my Nikon D5100 guessing on settings and using a solar filter.

Monsoon clouds in canyon from Walhalla overlook North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Walhalla overlook NR GRCA NP AZ taken 8/27/13

My choice this week is dedicated to my dear friend Arija who loves all things of life and recently lost her long-time husband.  May the dark clouds of life only hover briefly opening our eyes to the brilliance of the world.  Carry all the memories close to the heart.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 25 and 2000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 21

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 8 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.

Fall colors North Kaibab National Forest Arizona

MaryBeth chose #1990, “the birth of my first Grandson who  graduated this year from eastern U. with a degree in Psychology and still can’t psych his Gramma out.”  I’m getting psyched out for the fall colors that are soon to arrive on the Kaibab Plateau.  This view from two years ago September 29th.  Sorry for the bug splotches on the windshield.

Stained glass Unicorn under the quarter moon

Sherry chose #1980 as “It was a VERY good year!”  In 1980 I still lived in Illinois and my craft at the time was stained glass.  This unicorn piece was my own design and had way too many very tiny pieces of glass.  But it was a very good year.

Sandstone butte with tee-pee shapes along Johnson Canyon Road Utah

Sallie chose #1108, “my street address when I was in grade school …. a time back in the dark ages that I dimly remember.”  These Navajo sandstone formations are even older than the dark ages deposited about 200 million years ago as sand dunes.  Now we can drive through certain areas of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument like Johnson Canyon where I saw these tee-pee shapes.

Carson & Gaelyn on beack south of Orik California

Bibi chose #1999 as the “year of the NATO bombing of Serbia :(“  I am sorry to say I was oblivious to world events during this time of my life.  Traveling south along the California coast just south of Orik, Carson and I played on the beach.

Grass seed head along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Diane chose #1947, the year she was born.  Every time I see grasses and plants I think of birth and new life.  This photo was taken along the Echo Ravine trail in Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.

Sea of Cortez from road to Porto Cito Baja Mexico

Barb chose #47 for “how many years we’ve been married.”  Shortly after I wasn’t married anymore (made it 15 years) a dear friend and I stayed for a month in our RVs in San Felipe, Mexico.  This shot of the Sea of Cortez was taken along the road to Porto Cito.  Calling all those potholes a road was a real stretch but was worth every bump.

Birds in snow Yarnell Arizona

Red Nomad OZ chose #378, “the number of Google Connect blog followers I currently have.”  Well there certainly isn’t that many birds in this photo, but sometimes during winter feeding it does look like hundreds.

Ostrich Kruger National Park South Africa

Jo chose #1113, “just because it sprang into my head as I commented!”  Seems like there is always a little spring to the walk of Ostriches, these seen in Kruger National Park, South Africa along with a whole lot of other birds.

Turkey vultures soaring over Grand Canyon from Point Imperial North Rim Arizona

My choice for this week shows Turkey Vultures soaring over Grand Canyon from the Point Imperial overlook.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  For next week leave a number between 50 and 999 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
