Foto Friday Fun 32

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 9 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  All their choices come from Arizona.

Weaver Mountains from Iron Springs Road Arizona

Jo chose #299, “for no reason at all.”  I have reasons for taking so many photos to jog my memory when sharing stories. Guess I’m a visual kind of gal.  Even while driving I like to document the journey.  Like driving home from Prescott towards the familiar Weaver Mountains of my backyard.

View E from Upper Ken Patrick trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Firefly chose #281, “just because that is where the numbers fell.”  Well that number falls into Grand Canyon and beyond to the plains of the Navajo Reservation.  This eastern view is from the Upper Ken Patrick trail on the North Rim.

Mule deer Yarnell Arizona

Yogi chose #300, “Splitting the difference. I am a professional negotiator and I never ever split the difference. So this time I can do that.”  Do you think these two were negotiating or splitting the difference?  Mule deer are seen frequently here in Yarnell.

Weaver Mountains under clouds Congress Arizona

Barb chose #356, “For no particular reason.”  Seems to be a lot of that going around.  Another view of the Weaver Mountains but this time from below in Congress, Arizona.  I live at the top, where the desert breeze meets the mountain air.

Mating doves Yarnell Arizona

Sallie chose #400, “because somebody else is already first I might as well be last.”  This is probably the last time I’ll get lucky enough for such an intimate shot.

Z Triangle Ranch Wagner Road Arizona

Diane chose #333, “just because I like it for some odd reason.”  For some odd reason I really like to take back road trips where the scenery is usually worth the bumps along the way.  And this drive on the Wagner Road provided some awesome views over the rolling ranch lands just north of where I winter.

Mom's doily on rocker Yarnell Arizona

MaryBeth chose #316, “the road I live on in Stanwood.”  Sorry, Diane got the road picture.  I am so thankful that Mom’s old rocker along with the doily she knitted and stuffed dog she made, –I grew up with a dachshund—were in the RV and not in the shed that burned in the Yarnell Fire.

Javelina at water bowl Yarnell Arizona

Elaine chose #277.  Javelinas are regularly seen around Yarnell most often towards dusk.  The water I put out for the birds attracts them into my yard.

Moonrise Toroweap Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Arija also chose #300.  One of my only, almost successful, night shots taken as the moon rose from my Toroweap campsite.  I really need to work on more night sky photography.

View from Gydo Pass above Ceres Valley South Africa

My choice this week is not from Arizona.  This view from the Gydo Pass looks down on the valley where I stayed at Rhodene Farm in South Africa.  Because I LOVE to drive mountain roads my host recommended this short drive to the top.  After stopping to enjoy the view I headed back down and on my way.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 1 and 5100 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 31

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 9 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Last week I asked for a number that would correspond to one of the 1302 posts published since the launch of the originally Geogypsy on blogspot five years ago.  If you missed it there’s a link in the #1 choice below.

Cloud shadows on Vermilion Cliffs from SR89A North Arizona
Cloud shadows on Vermilion Cliffs from SR89A North Arizona April 19, 2012

Jo chose #1025, the date of the day she left her comment.  These cloud shadows on the Vermilion Cliffs were a driving shot on my way to the North Rim in April 2012.  Sure felt good to be that close to home after the trials and towing of that unforgettable journey.

Knysna Loerie at Birds of Eden Plattenberg Bay South Africa
Knysna Loerie at Birds of Eden Plattenberg Bay South Africa March 1, 2013

Firefly chose #1302 which is from a most recent post about Birds of Eden.  I noticed several commenters didn’t agree when I say I’m not a birder.  Well, maybe I am.  I would most certainly return to spend more time here.

Side mirror view of Red Butte US180 South Kaibab National Forest Arizona
Side mirror view of Red Butte US180 South Kaibab National Forest Arizona January 30, 2012

Sherry chose #1111, more photos from the road, and sometimes the best views are behind us.  Thus an entire post dedicated to views in the side mirror.

Plaza entrance for Dr Castro's dental office Algadones Mexico
Plaza entrance for Dr Castro’s dental office Algadones Mexico October 27, 2008

Yogi chose #15 taking us back to 2008 when I was getting dental work done in Algadones, Mexico.  A very colorful place.

Mushroom Rock Golden Gate Highlands National Park R712 Free State South Africa
Mushroom Rock Golden Gate Highlands National Park R712 Free State South Africa February 12, 2013

Arija chose #1248, “the year the building of Cologne cathedral started. Although a bomb destroyed the apse in the raid that flattened the rest of the city in WW II, the pilots all aimed at this magnificent gothic cathedra but obviously, an angel’s wing protected it.”  I felt protected by the giant Mushroom Rock that rose behind camp at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.

Adolph Christmas 1970 Downers Grove Illinois
Adolph Christmas 1970 Downers Grove Illinois

Sallie chose #208 a meme post for Remember Whensday which takes us back to my teenage years on Christmas 1970.  Our dog Adolph unwraped his football present and was ready to play.  These old scanned photos don’t look very good but still bring back the memories.

Tapeats Terrace & Great Thumb Mesa from Crazy Jug Point FS292 Kaibab Natonal Forest Arizona
Tapeats Terrace & Great Thumb Mesa from Crazy Jug Point FS292 Kaibab Natonal Forest Arizona July 12, 2010

Diane chose #555 from the Scenic Sunday meme showing just one of many Grand Canyon views from Crazy Jug Point.  Being that’s one of my favorite places to camp along the rim there are a lot more images from there.

View south from Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
View south from Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona October 7, 2008

MaryBeth chose #1 because, “I want to be first—someday in my lifetime.”  OMG, this is my very first post and nobody even commented on it.  I was a total newbie just finishing up my first season Rangering at Grand Canyon as I introduced myself to the cyber world.  If you don’t already know me you might want to check this one out.  And could you leave a comment please?

Fall along the Bridle trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Fall along the Bridle trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona October 16, 2008

Melissa chose #8, “for the windows 8 that is currently making me crazy on the new computer!!”  Still early in my blogging this post went out at the end of my first season when leaving Grand Canyon for the winter.  I was, and still am, entranced by the fall aspen with their glittering coins of gold.

Dear park RanGer note from Secret campers at campground amphitheater North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Dear park RanGer note from Secret campers at campground amphitheater North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona August 19, 2010

I have enjoyed, and sometimes agonized, over every 1,306 posts—including this one.  I love to share the places I work and play, seeing your (virtual) smile makes my day.  The same is true for me as a Park Ranger seeing the smile of visitors when they look into the Grand Canyon.  Or maybe the light bulb going off over their head when they see a condor and know it for what it is because they attended a Ranger talk and learned how to identify the difference between a turkey vulture and a condor.  Yet the best for me was finding this note one night before a campfire program.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 200 and 400 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 30

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 10 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Several people chose ages for either themselves or someone else.  Considering we are all youngsters these low numbers bring out some real treasures from the past, though not always of the highest quality photos.

Ray & June, Ron & Gaelyn Rachel & Zowie Morton Arboredum Lisle Illinois
Ray & June, Ron & Gaelyn Rachel & Zowie Morton Arboredum Lisle Illinois June 27, 1980

Firefly chose #13, “An unlucky number for most but my fav number.”  This image shows a lucky day for me, when I got married.  Maybe another lucky number would be the day I divorced but that’s a different story.  Here you see my Dad and Mom, husband and me, and my two step-children.  The wedding was performed at Morton Arboredum so all 40 guests had to pay $1 to attend.  Reception held later at a restaurant.

View northeast from Pima Point Hermit Road South Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
View northeast from Pima Point Hermit Road South Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona January 29, 2012

Sherry chose #836.  I don’t usually get to see the Grand Canyon with snow unless I visit the south rim during winter like I did a couple years ago for a gathering of historians.

Wilbur the burrowing owl California Living Museum Bakersfield California
Wilbur the burrowing owl California Living Museum Bakersfield California ~1987

Jo chose #61, “I’m heading for that age in 2014.”  Jo is a birder so should like her choice this week of a burrowing owl who lived at the California Living Museum where I volunteered as an animal keeper.  We called this one Wilbur and the other one Orville.

Necklace 29inch Turqoise, Coral, Jet, Pipestone & SS $75
Necklace 29inch Turqoise, Coral, Jet, Pipestone & SS $75

Diane chose #71 following Jo’s lead for her age, I presume next year.  She’s a jewelry maker so will probably appreciate this necklace I strung many years ago.  I haven’t taken out beads almost since I started blogging. Maybe I should put together a store page on the blog to sell some of the pieces I still have, like this one.

Blue, red & purple glass over sink Berta's house Yarnell Arizona
Blue, red & purple glass over sink Berta’s house Yarnell Arizona March 9, 2012

Sally chose #164, “just because!”  My dear friend Berta collects just because she can and this display of colorful glass over her sink shows what amazing taste she has.  I loved when the morning light created a colorful glow in this window.  So glad I took photos of this because it is now just a memory after the Yarnell Fire.

Sunset over Transept Canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Sunset over Transept Canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona July 6, 2012

The butterbean carpenter, who may be a new reader so I don’t know if they blog, chose #173, “for why I don’t know !!!”  I’d like to welcome you to Geogypsy with this sunset over Transept Canyon.  Did you know that Rangers get paid in sunsets?

Last light on temples North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona
Last light on temples North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona July 7, 2012

Yogi chose #197, “It just popped in my head.”  Even after six seasons my eyes pop every time I look into Grand Canyon.  Yet my favorite sight is the ever changing light and shadow play as the sun moves across the sky.  Can you see where the shadow of Angels Gate is perfectly outlined on the far canyon wall towards the left?

Grandfather clock Wenatchee Washington 1986
Stained glass Grandfather clock Wenatchee Washington Winter 1986

Arija chose #77, “Yep, I have reached three score years and seventeen, aren’t I lucky?”  Yes, I believe you are lucky in many ways Arija.  Your number takes us back to 1986 when I made this stained glass clock as a wedding gift for friends.

Snow Yarnell Arizona
Snow Yarnell Arizona March 17, 2008

Elaine chose #57, “our high temperature for the last two days, and likely the last we’ll see in the 50s for a good like time.”  Being she lives in Alaska there will be plenty more of this white stuff than I see here in Yarnell, Arizona.

Gaelyn's truck & 5th-wheel Boron California
Gaelyn’s truck & 5th-wheel Boron California October 26, 2007

MaryBeth chose #46, “the age of my oldest.”  She really likes road trips and so do I.  This is one of my old trucks and RV at a rest stop in Boron, California on a road trip from Oregon to Arizona.

Three generations of elephants Kruger National Park South Africa
Three generations of elephants Kruger National Park South Africa February 9, 2013

Three generations of elephants Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice this week, twice because I couldn’t decide and seems they couldn’t either:  Three generations of elephants in Kruger National Park, my favorite animals on safari, with lions my second or maybe zebras or…  Guess I’m thinking elephants because I’m planning for my next trip to South Africa leaving in mid-January for three months.  And that’s why you’ve been seeing so many posts about the last trip which I feel duty bound to finish posting about before going again.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. Next week I’m asking for a number between 1 and 1302 for the number of posts I’ve published.  I will show an image from that post and share the link.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

I am currently…
