Foto Friday Fun 41

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 9 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Pretty heavy in Southwest Native American this week.

Mesa Verde National Park Spruce Tree House Colorado

Arija chose #47 because, “it just popped into my head.”  You could just pop through this little T-door then down the ladder—two poles sticking up—into a kiva at Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde National Park, CO.  This is the third larges cliff dwelling in the park with about 130 rooms built about 800 years ago by the Ancestral Puebloan Indians.  When I worked here I used to love to have the place to myself and swear I could hear, or at least sense, ancient spirits.

Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM Arizona

Yogi chose #169, “because that is 13 squared and it just popped in my head.”  I’m not good at math and wonder if the people from 1000 years ago who left this rock art would have understood a number squared.  Numbers are like code to me and so are some of these symbols I saw while hiking at the Nampaweap rock art site in Grand Canyon Parashant National Monument.

18 inches of snow 1-24-96 Pine Creek Work Station Gifford Pinchot National Forest Washington

Jo chose #10, “the date we leave site next week.”  As a volunteer with the Forest Service in 1996 I couldn’t leave to go anywhere with 18 inches of fresh snow at Pine Creek Work Station on the south side of Mount Saint Helens.  This was only the beginning and we were snowed in for days then a huge melt occurred followed by flooding and evacuation.

Havasupai Uqualla Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Sherry chose #675.  Must be the luck of her draw to keep getting photos from Native American Heritage Days held annually in August at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  Havasupai healer Uqualla wove songs, dance and stories sharing traditional and spiritual values.  The image is hazy looking due to the smoke from burning sage used to cleanse.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument Lake Powell Utah

Bibi chose #1492, “the year that Columbus ‘sailed the ocean blue’…and subsequently wrought havoc.”  Columbus didn’t see the Southwest but reverberations certainly made it that far.  Rainbow Bridge is considered a sacred place to the Navajo and Hopi tribal people and it’s not an easy place to get to by land.  I’m sure they weren’t happy when Glen Canyon was flooded creating Lake Powell which makes access to Rainbow Bridge pretty easy by boat.  I’m glad for the experience but don’t see myself going there again.

Wildflowers Big Basin Point Sublime Road North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Sallie chose #954 as “part of a phone number.”  And this is only part of the flowers seen in the Big Basin, a huge meadow on the way to Point Sublime.

Mural at Mini Mart Peeples Valley Arizona

MaryBeth chose #280, “because that’s how many miles it is to the ranch from here.”  It’s only three miles from my home to many ranches in Peeples Valley where our nearest fuel station is at the Mini Mart.  And it’s the only mural for many miles around, although MaryBeth sees many murals where she’s from.

Black-bellied Korhaan Kruger National Park South Africa

Diane chose #1499.  This Black-bellied Korhann was strutting its stuff in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Sunset & crashing waves at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Elaine chose #2014, “for a good start in the New Year.” I am heading back to South Africa at the start of the New Year and do plan to revisit Tsitsikamma National Park to again watch the waves at sunset.

Bed area in RV torn apart Yarnell Arizona

My choice…  This is the bedroom in my 5th-wheel home, which has a slide out.  Had water damage so now it has to be torn apart for repairs.  Thank goodness the job will be done while I’m traveling in South Africa.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. I’m going to try to keep this going while traveling and ask for number choices by the Tuesday following the post.  To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 150 and 1500 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 40

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 9 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Lots of pics from Grand Canyon and a few oldies.

Fall aspen along FR610 Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Arija chose #999, “part of my mobile phone number and because I like it.”  No mobile service along this forest road on the North Kaibab, and I like that.  Because who would want to be chatting on the phone with all this brilliant fall colors on the aspen.

Straight & Quartz Creeks waterfall Gifford Pinchot National Forest Washington

Jo chose #30, “as Debbie has a birthday on Monday 30th (so does my brother, Phillip) and she is very special to us.”  I feel like digital cameras were my best birthday present ever.  I’ve taken photos for 50 years and always like panoramas which I used to tape together.  Sure is nice just to push a button now.  This funny pano was taken in 2001 at Quartz Creek waterfall in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington long before I owned digital.

Halloween in Congress Arizona

Yogi chose #97, “cuz if my Cowboys can beat Philadelphia this weekend they will have a 9-7 record and win the NFC East title.”  So is that a game of chance like these kids trying to win a piece of cake?  Just one of the fun activities for Halloween back in 2005 when a friend and I helped a local business entertain the Congress kids.

Tree wedged high in slot canyon Wire Pass trail Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Utah

Sherry chose #737 and she likes a challenging hike so perhaps slipping between the cracks along the Wire Pass trail to Buckskin Gulch Slot Canyon would appeal.  Note the tree wedged high in the canyon which indicates just how much water can flow through here.

Riding mules on North Kaibab trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

MaryBeth chose #57.  Now I know she’s a horse loving woman but don’t know how she feels about mules.  At the Grand Canyon mules have been hauling people and supplies for over 100 years.  I rode a mule 5 miles into the canyon and back from the North Rim.  They are wider than horses.  Awesome experience, but, no matter how you go down and up at the canyon something is going to hurt.

Chateau in snow Oregon Caves National Monument Oregon

Patti chose #14, “because it’s my birthday and it’s the day you’re taking off!”  I sure hope it doesn’t look like this on January 14th.  Although it’s more likely at Oregon Caves, like this image, than Phoenix.  I volunteered part of the winter of 2004 and learned how to use snowshoes, amongst other things.

Walhalla Glades ruin Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Bibi chose #777, “First number that came into my head.”  Here’s what’s left of the home of the first people to live at Grand Canyon.  The Ancestral Puebloans grew crops on the Walhalla Plateau during summer and returned to the river for the cold winters.

Kanab Symphony North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Melissa chose #914 as “random fun.”  Definitely fun to listen to the Kanab Symphony with Grand Canyon as a backdrop.

Shadows in Angels window from Cape Royal trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Diane chose #653 which provides a window into the Grand Canyon from along the Cape Royal Trail on the North Rim.

Sunset Night ride Kruger National Park Mpumalanga South Africa

My choice this week is a sunset at Kruger National Park, South Africa.  And I’ll be back there soon to see more of these.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 150 and 1500 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 39

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 7 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Quite a few Grand Canyon shots plus a few oldies.

Full moon rise over Walhalla Plateau from Bright Angel Point trailhead North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Jo chose #499, “Just because it’s one before 500, LOL!”  I took this photo just because a full moon was rising above the canyon walls.

Cool house along the Sea of Cortez San Felipe Baja Mexico

Bibi chose #20, “today’s date as I type.”  Knowing that she’s no bigger fan of cold weather than I am so thinking this place along the Sea of Cortez in San Felipe Baja Mexico might warm us both up a bit.  Maybe we could rent this house.  Who wants to join me?

Kaibab Plateau from SR89A south Arizona

Yogi chose #666, “again, I know that is boring to some but my partnership with the devil is working out well for me.”  Your ‘partnership’ got a road shot driving up onto the Kaibab Plateau from the north where I sometimes shop, 85 miles from the North Rim.  I like how you can see the road cut switching back and forth.  And bonus the moon.

Hopi glass blower Ramson Lomatewama Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Sherry chose #616.  Last week you saw the Hopi glass blower at Native American Heritage Days held annually at the North Rim of Grand Canyon.  Here’s a close up of working the glass and adding some color on the marving table.  I really hope Sherry gets to see this next year.

Woton's Throne & sunset from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Diane chose #696, a glittery sunset on Wotan’s Throne from Cape Royal, a marvelous overlook at the North Rim.  I sure am looking forward to this view again in the spring.

Sunset over Transept Canyon North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Arija chose #123, yet another sunset taken at the North Rim, this one from the Transept trail.  Do you see a face in that rock?

Dale with salmon Carson Washington

MaryBeth chose #1, “because Bob’s birthday is the 1st month of this new year and he is #1 in my life now.”  Back in 2002, Dale the fisherman was my #1 guy, and here he shows off his salmon prize caught in the Columbia River.  We traveled together for several years on the flea market circuit.

Elephant Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice this week…     With only 20 days until touch down the call to South Africa gets louder and more intense.  Can barely wait to see these marvelous giants again.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories. To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 1 and 1000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
