Foto Friday Fun 44

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Because I removed many photos off the hard drive most of the choices come from my 2013 visit to South Africa.

Sunset Dam Kruger National Park South Africa

Firefly chose #1799, “The year the British built Fort Frederick, the oldest building in Port Elizabeth.”  Don’t know when SANParks built Sunset Dam in Kruger but it is my favorite dam and I’m now camped nearby at Lower Sabie.  However, this image is from the 2013 visit.

Yellow footprint trail marker along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Yogi chose #1966 because, “I liked that year.”  I liked the yellow footprints that marked the way along Echo Ravine Trail at Golden Gate Highlands National Park where Joan and I hiked in 2013.

Grass seed head along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Bibi chose #1946, “the birth year of a dear friend, okay, my old boyfriend.”  This grass grew along the Echo Ravine Trail that I walked with a dear friend but not boyfriend.

Sunrise over waves & dolphins at Tsitsikamma National Park Storms River Mouth South Africa

Jo chose #1953, “this is the year I was born.”  Sorry there is no correlation to these dolphins swimming just off shore at Tsitsikamma National Park seen in 2013 in South Africa.  But I know she’s been here before.

View of Reception from Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Diane chose #1981, “the year we got married.”  I think Golden Gate Highlands National Park would be a gorgeous place to get married, but once was enough for me and hopefully for her too.

Flowering cactus along Cliff Spring Trail Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

MaryBeth chose #27, “cuz that’s how old I am today.”  Always good to feel young at heart and especially when hiking on the North Rim over rocky trails past the cactus.

Unidentified white flower along Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa

Arija chose #1934, “It was the year my absolutely wonderful sister was born.”  This absolutely wonderful unidentified flower grows along Echo Ravine Trail in Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa.

Decorated slide in RV Yarnell Arizona

Sallie chose #17, “Last week I chose the year I got married.  This is how old I was then.”  This shot of the inside of my 5th-wheel was taken a year when I didn’t get married but did live with Michael for a while.

Elephant rest against a tree Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice this week of course from the current journey in South Africa’s Kruger National Park.  Elephants are often seen leaning against a tree for a little catnap, or elenap, but this is the first time I’ve seen the trunk rest upwards like this. Guess it just gets too heavy to carry sometimes.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 1 and 300 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 43

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 9 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  Being that I removed many photos from the hard drive before traveling the choices are limited.  Hope you enjoy them anyway.

Grandma Bea & Grandpa Butch May 1958

Arija chose #1958, “the year we were married.”  My Grandma Bea and Grandpa Butch were married long before that but this photo was taken May 1958.

Blue wildebeests Pilansberg Game Reserve South Africa

Elaine chose #111 and gets an adult and young Blue Wildebeest taken last week at Pilansberg Game Reserve.

Rusty stuff Gold King Mine Ghost town Jerome Arizona

Yogi chose #345, “cuz I’m helping son study for a Geometry test today and I just love that 3 squared plus 4 squared equals 5 squared. He is not sharing my enthusiasm for the perfection of it all.”  I just don’t get all this number stuff but maybe he can figure out how many pieces of rusty junk are in this shot taken at Gold King Mine Ghost Town in Jerome, Arizona.

Dassie along Suspension Bridge trail at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Sherry chose #1888 and gets to see a Dassie or Rock Hyrax I saw along the Suspension Bridge trail at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park in South Africa last year.  Sure hope to return to hike there again this visit.

Morning dew on grasses Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Bibi chose 16, for “Sweet Sixteen.” This morning dew on the grasses sure looked sweet out on the Walhalla Plateau on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  And I sure hope to show it to her when she visits this summer.

Gail 3 yrs old Studio photo 1957 Illinois

Sallie chose #1957, “the year we got married.”  I was only three years old that year and my Mom liked to take me to a studio for photos.

Sunrise over waves at Tsitsikamma National Park Storms River Mouth South Africa

MaryBeth chose #2000, “I feel like I need a BIG number.”  She gets a big wave at Tsitsikamma National Park from last year’s visit.

Sunrise over waves with birds at Tsitsikamma National Park Storms River Mouth South Africa

Diane chose #1911 and also gets a Tsitsikamma sunrise from last year.

Scops-Owl Kruger National Park South Africa

Firefly chose #1321, “a combination of two of my favourite numbers, 13 and 21.”  I’ll bet he’ll recognize this sweet Scops Owl as a favorite also seen last year at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Lioness Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice was taken on Thursday as the last sighting of the day as this beautiful lioness strolled past our closed car window not three feet away.  She was joined by two others and almost caused us to be late returning to camp before the gate closed.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun.  I’ll continue to try to keep up with this while traveling in South Africa.  To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 15 and 2000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Foto Friday Fun 42

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.

Red-billed Hornbill Kruger National Park South Africa

Jo chose #1399, “just so I can choose a bigger number this week.”  Won’t be long now and those bigger numbers will all be South Africa.  But then this shot of the Hornbill was taken in Kruger National Park in South Africa.  Soon I’ll see them again along with a whole lot of other other birds.  And maybe I’ll get lucky and see Jo again on this trip as she is on holiday in South Africa.

Apache dancers Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Arija chose #728 by, “just shut my eyes and clicked on some number keys.”  She identifies with Native people so hopefully will like these Apache dancers who performed at last year’s Native American Heritage Days on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  I don’t know how they kept that big head gear on while jumping and moving like they did.

Immature Coopers Hawk on fence Yarnell Arizona

MaryBeth chose #150, “because I like the number.”  Hope you also like this immature Copper’s Hawk sitting on the fence.  I still see the hawks occasionally but the fence burned.  I haven’t been feeding the birds this winter as I didn’t want the javelina coming in for the ground fall of seed and getting into the mess of what remains of my shed.

Navajo Bridge, Marble Canyon & Colorado River from Navajo Bridge Glen Canyon Recreation Area Marble Canyon Arizona

Bibi chose #1144, “the date of the completion of the choir (where the choir and priests sat) in the cathedral of St. Denis in Paris. Its choir is considered to be the first medieval Gothic architecture ever built.  I’m reading a very good book about it.”  I’m afraid this image has nothing to do with a choir.  But Bibi shares photos of bridges quite often so hope she’ll like this shot of the Navajo Bridge crossing the Colorado River at Marble Canyon.  Great place to see California Condors.

Last light view from Point Sublime North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Elaine chose #1111 because for some reason it popped into her head.  Well here we see some last light shinning on the temples seen from Point Sublime as the sun gets ready to pop below the horizon.

Kissing rocks Weaver Mountains Yarnell Arizona

Yogi chose #40, “because this year I will have that many years in the energy industry.”  It takes a bit of energy to climb up into the Weaver Mountains and see the balancing boulders.  Oh, not that kind of energy.  Actually I think Yogi would be searching for, or hiding, a geocache in this kind of terrain.

Classic car North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Diane chose #913 because, “sounds as good a number as any.”  But I know she chose that as one of her favorite Porsche models.  Hope this old classic will do instead seen at Grand Canyon.

Derrick Suwaima Davis Native American Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Firefly chose #795 because it “just popped into my head.”  Seems there’s a lot of that popping going on.  I know he’s interested in our Native Americans so here’s an image of internationally known Hopi Derrick Suwaima Davis preparing for the Eagle dance at last year’s Native American Heritage Days held annually in August at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.

Lioness Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice…  Hopefully I’m already seeing more lions, but while putting together this post I wasn’t there yet.  The first time I visited South Africa’s Kruger National Park this lioness paused not five feet from the vehicle window looking behind for her cubs.  My heart and breathing stopped but my shutter finger kept on pushing.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun. I really enjoy digging through my archives and pulling the stories from my memories.  To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 15 and 2000 in a comment and maybe see your chosen image next week.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
