Foto Friday Fun 50

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 8 images chosen by readers out of my photo archives.  Of course these are all from my current journey through South Africa as that’s all I have on the replacement computer.

Gaelyn's shadow Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Bibi chose #31, “for Baskin Robbins 31 flavors.”  Me, and my shadow, have fallen in love with a flavor I’m not sure Baskin Robbins carries.  Joan introduced me to frozen juice Granadilla on a stick and now I want them every day.  Thank goodness they were available while at Tsitsikamma National Park so I could watch the waves while eating.

Sunset Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Diane chose #10, “the date of Nigel’s birthday.”  Last week she saw the sunrise and today she gets a sunset at Tsitsikamma National Park.  I know she dearly wants to return to South Africa for a visit so hope she gets to see this sight in person one day.

Waterfall Tsitsikamma National Park South Africa

Sallie chose #12, “the number of my descendants (to date).”  I think this waterfall seen hiking at Tsitsikamma National Park has about 12 descents.  But the route to get there had many more ascents and descents over large boulders.

Lagoon Tsitsikamma NP Natures Valley South Africa

Sherry chose #415.  She’s a beach gal and loves to swim so believe she’d really like this lagoon that runs into the Indian Ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park in Nature’s Valley.  Of course I didn’t see any manatees there.  Winking smile

Saddle-bill stork Kruger National Park South Africa

Yogi chose #333, “Cuz it is half the number of the beast.”  Although very large, this Saddle-bill Stork is probably half the number of many of the beasts I’ve seen while in Kruger National Park.

Hyena pup sleeping Kruger National Park South Africa

Jo chose #442 as “we’ve been married for 42 and I added 400 for fun.”  Sure glad hyenas are her “favourite carnivores” as she’s getting another.  There were two sweet and snoozing cubs along the road early one morning in Kruger National Park.

Lion Kruger National Park South Africa

Elaine chose #500.  I’d give this big boy a 500+ after watching him mate three times at Kruger National Park South Africa.

Jonker chose #593, as “just another random number for another random picture.”  He worked at and lives nearby Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa where I saw these young elephants at play.

Hyena pups Addo Elephant National Park South Africa

My choice this week, two hyena pups seen at Addo Elephant National Park.  Mom actually sniffed the side mirror while I took a bad quality video.

Thank you for joining in Foto Friday Fun where readers choose a number from my archives and I share the corresponding
photo and a story.  To join in the fun for next week leave a number between 01 and 999 in a comment and maybe see your
chosen image next week.

Sorry I haven’t been very active reading blogs while on this amazing journey in South Africa.  I barely have time to write posts, and check email and Facebook.  I return to the States April 9th and hope to do more catching up.  Then I return to work at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park April 29th but of course we don’t open until May 15th.  Hope some of you will come for a visit this summer.

Foto Friday Fun 49

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 6 images chosen by readers out of my photo archives.  All photos are from my current journey through South Africa.

Jo chose #989, “just to stay in the game!”  Her game this week includes a pair of Hyena pups suckling at Kruger National Park South Africa.  These pups were probably a couple years old and should have been past this point but as we saw the next day there were two other younger pups as well.

Lion Kruger National Park South Africa

Sherry chose #515.  This lion was ‘cat napping’ after a quick bit of mating and while waiting for the female to initiate for another go.  We got to watch them mate three times in Kruger National Park.  It’s rather fast and furious and continues about every 10-20 minutes for three days.  Hard to say how long they’d been at it but no wonder he was tired.

Baby elephant suckling Kruger National Park South Africa

Jonker chose #783, “Just another random number.”  And this is just another random sighting of elephants at Kruger National Park.  However you might notice the baby suckling.

Sunrise Scottburg South Africa

Bibi chose #555 which is the number of stairs she goes up and down every day.  She must be in great shape.  So how about a great sunrise taken on the beach below our camp in Scottburg South Africa.

Caves Wild Coast Sun Port Edward South Africa

Yogi chose #666, “cuz it is the mark of the beast.”  Instead of a beast he gets shallow caves where marine fossils are found at Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward South Africa.

Cleaning mohair Hintervelt tour Uintenhauge South Africa

Diane chose #777 which features one of the many machines used to clean mohair.  The tour took us through the entire process except sheering and I bought some mohair socks.  Love how soft, silky and warm they are.  Will post about the tour soon.

Mother & baby elephants Addo Elephant National Park South Africa

My choice this week is my favorite animal and experience of the trip so far.  In Addo Elephant National Park yesterday we saw over 100 elephants and were at one time surrounded.  What could be more endearing than a mother and child.

Foto Friday Fun 48

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 5 images chosen by readers out of my photo archives.  Most of these images were taken from my return visit to Kruger National Park South Africa.

Sunset Satara Camp Kruger National Park South Africa

Jonker chose #579 and this sunset from Satara Camp in Kruger National Park is to tease him enough to go there with his family.  It’s only a couple days drive away from where he lives in Port Elizabeth South Africa.

Wild dog Kruger National Park South Africa

Yogi chose #918, “cuz that is Tulsa’s area code.”  I’m pretty sure this Wild dog, with all four feet off the ground, doesn’t have or need an area code.  But Yogi does have a “wild” dog so should appreciate this sighting from Kruger National Park South Africa.

Wild dogs Kruger National Park South Africa

Bibi chose #888 because, “Those eights look cool.”  And so do the Wild dogs.  Notice how the rear dog has one blind eye.  Didn’t seem to slow it down any.  The pack was on the hunt.  And yes, I did take that many photos of these as you can see by the previous number and this one.

Diane chose #950, “for not particular reason.”  I wonder if she’s ever seen or been a secretary.  This Secretarybird, seen in Kruger National Park, searched for bugs which it stomped on before eating them.  Why ‘secretary’?  Notice how the head feathers look like pencils stuck in the hair of a hard working secretary.  (Sure hope you can actually watch this video Diane as I know you don’t have the best connection.)

Dung beetle iSimangaliso Wetland Park South Africa

Sherry chose #370.  Hope she’s not too disappointed with this dung beetle crawling on Joan’s hand that we saw at iSimangaliso Wetland Park South Africa.  Don’t worry, she didn’t pick it up out of the dung.  Winking smile

Impala jumping Kruger National Park South Africa

My choice this week is the Impala that out ran the Wild dogs on the hunt.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

I am currently…
