A look back at the decade 2010-20

Sunset rays on Zoroaster & Brahma temples from Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaSeems I often look back, I do love those memories.  As I put together this post I realized that much has happened in the decade 2010-20, many changes, lessons, loss and gain.  For someone who looks at life six months at a time, a decade seems like forever.

Where was I ten years ago at the end of 2009?  I’d been blogging for a year where I met many people who have changed and touched my life.  You know who you are.

If it wasn’t for blogger Joan sharing her love of all things nature in South Africa I might not have started the last decade visiting her amazing country.  Trip of a lifetime.  Then because I love the place so much returned two more times and am ready to go back again.  Maybe 2021, want to go along?  My Dad passed away not long before this trip and so his memory went with me.

Summer of 2010 was the third season I worked as a Park Ranger on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.  Explorations continued on the Colorado Plateau camping at Toroweap and hiking Havasu Canyon.  Hard to believe I was posting almost every day.  Where did I find the time?

My return to the Grand Canyon brought me another trip of a lifetime as I was paid to raft the Colorado River, which I blogged about for months.

Spent most of the winter of 2012 in Yarnell.  Returned for my fifth summer season at Grand Canyon and my first time photographing a solar eclipse.  I attended my first class reunion, 40 years after graduating from high school.  Mostly it was a calm year with life in a good balance of work and play.  Or maybe I was resting up for the next year.

Because in early 2013 I returned to South Africa for two months, their summer our winter.  The land and people grabbed and hung on to my heart.

I returned to Yarnell in the spring and left for the North Rim shortly before the Yarnell fire.  I lost a bunch of storage shed stuff while many friends lost their homes.  I moved back to Yarnell in the fall to help with the cleanup, both physically and mentally.

In early 2014 I once again returned to South Africa, this time for three months, my entire visa time.  Joan and I covered 5000 miles, visited ten national parks, camped 80 out of 85 nights, and had the best time ever.

I returned for summer at the Grand Canyon, learned to embrace monsoon, and was fortunate enough to see a partial lunar eclipse.

After returning to Yarnell in the fall, Berta and I took a trip to the Pacific Northwest.  I bought the current slide-in camper and began exploring with my home on the back.

Then just kept on exploring during winter 2015 visiting Anza-Borrego, the Salton Sea, and Joshua Tree.

Now being a two RV owner I had to make two trips for my eighth season at the North Rim.  Well worth it when I can take comforts along during summer jaunts.  However, didn’t take it when Bill and I visited Hovenweep, Natural Bridges, Canyonlands, Arches, and Capital Reef in the fall.

Then spent a cold, snowy winter in Kanab, Utah in the 5th-wheel.

In early 2016 I used the truckcamper for trips to Valley of Fire, Death Valley for Superbloom, Mojave National Preserve, and Quartzsite.

I became a semi movie star in a film student’s documentary about my nomadic lifestyle.  I’ve recently added a link to that seven minute film on the sidebar.

Winter of 2017 I split between living in the 5th-wheel in Kirkland and traveling in the truckcamper.  I like that combination and wish it wasn’t so much hassle to move both these RVs.  One trip out took me to the southern Arizona desert at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, Darby Well Road BLM, and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

Another jaunt went west to Valley of Fire, Death Valley, Alabama Hills, Manzanar National Historic Site, Fossil Falls, and Mojave Trails.

Berta and Sierra Yarnell ArizonaThen back in Yarnell the end of February Berta was diagnosed with brain cancer and the world took a different spin.  I promised to help her as long as I felt able.  In mid-May she went to her daughter’s in Portland, Oregon.  And in July she passed away.

I not only lost my best friend in the whole world but I lost my job too.  I stayed as caretaker for Berta’s Yarnell home.  Paid to have the 5th-wheel hauled to Yarnell.  Then I stayed for the summer followed by winter in one of the deepest pits of depression I’ve ever been through.  Grieving is a bitch, as I’m sure many of you know.

I did slip off once in the summer to Bryce Canyon National Park where I was encouraged to apply for the following summer.  A day trip to Flagstaff for fall colors.  And in November took a friend to his home town of Winslow, Arizona.

I lost that same friend to cancer in early 2019.  Followed by a job offer at Bryce for the summer.  So I had the 5th-wheel hauled to Utah and was settling into learning about the wonders of Bryce Canyon when I fell in mid-August and broke both my wrists.

Between surgery, healing, and PT, that’s taken up the rest of the year either in Cedar City, Utah or Congress, Arizona with three more PT appointments left.  Progress in mobility and strength continue.  I’ve made 1.8 of my two PT goals, using my big heavy camera and dumping the camper’s tanks (and you don’t want to know about that one).

As you can see by all the links included I’ve blogged about most of this decade 2010-20.  A decade full of ups and downs, and lessons in life.  Now, it’s time to look forward.

Happy Holidays!

in hopes that Santa can find me this year.
The life of a nomad keeps me on the run,
it’s really a life that is full of fun.
But it often means I don’t know where I’m at,
and Santa sometimes has a problem with that.

Memorable moments of 2014

With the new year here it seems like a time to reflect on the memorable moments of 2014.  I didn’t realize there were so many until I started to put this post together.  And then it started to get really long.  But I’ve tried to shorten it a bit for those who follow my journey regularly and added links for those who are new here.

South Africa for the 3rd glorious time

Pilanesburg Game Reserve South AfricaDid I really start the year off with three months in South Africa?  Oh Yea!  But it seems so long ago already and I long to return.  Of course January’s photos are limited because of my computer being stolen however the memories linger on.  After my arrival and stocking up on supplies Joan and I spent a few days in Pilanesberg GR/NP with Impala, Zebra, and unfortunately destructive Baboons, wandering into camp.

Kruger National Park South AfricaNext we went to  Kruger National Park for an almost two week safari, by far my favorite park in the country.  Once again I saw the Big 5 and added Wild Dogs to my species list.  We saw lions almost every day usually first thing in the morning while they still lounging on the warm road.  Became mandatory birders due to well watered and tall grasses reducing visibility.  And according to Joan we saw more leopards than usual.  Of course elephants ARE my favorite.

iSimangaliso & Badplass South AfricaIn February we traveled from Kruger to the coast via Badplass where the water-slides flow with warm thermal water.  Drove to Sodwana Bay but needed 4×4 to get anywhere so camped in St Lucia, a perfect base to visit Hluhluwe National Park and Cape Vidal iSimangaliso Wetland Park.  So much contrast between the coast and ‘the bush’ as so much inland landscapes are referred to.

Kruger National Park South AfricaThe bush has captured my spirit so it was no problem convincing Joan, who used to guide there, to return to Kruger after replacing the laptop.  And why not the warm waters of Badplaas along the way.

Wild Coast, Tsitsikamma National Park & mohair South AfricaAfter another week of wildlife in Kruger we headed south to  the Wild Coast where we saw magnificent fossils along the beach and ate out twice at the highly recommended Mac Banana.  We toured a mohair factory (which I still haven’t posted about) just outside of Port Elizabeth on the way to Tsitsikamma National Park, my fourth visit and favorite coastal park so far.

Karoo National Park & Warmwaterberg Spa South AfricaOur journey headed inland in March to another diverse landscape of the almost harsh looking Great Karoo and Karoo National Park.  We only stayed a couple days and with limited accessible roads that was plenty of time to see the wildlife, digest the geology and get acquainted with our neighbor the giant turtle.  I wanted to return and share Warmwaterberg Spa with Joan, a place she’d never been.  So we splurged on accommodations in the Main house and enjoyed our private Roman bath for two nights stay.

Addo Elephant National Park South AfricaThen another little backtrack, which we are famous for, through Meiringspoort pass to  Addo National Park, my third visit and second favorite SANPark, and where Joan volunteers education programs.  Elephants every day for 5 days, lots of them, many miles of passable roads, diverse landscapes, much wildlife, and did I mention lots of elephants.

Mountain Zebra National Park South AfricaOur next stop, Mt Zebra National Park, and having been there before knew our way around and again enjoyed the rolling landscape and wildlife, despite the rain.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park South AfricaNext we headed north with a restocking stop in Upington before a planned 7 days in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.  The dunes, mountains and valleys are rich with wildlife.  But unfortunately we couldn’t visit most of it because of absolutely terrible roads due to unusual recent rains and broken maintenance equipment.  We cut our visit short, returning to Upington.

Augrabies Falls National Park South AfricaThen on to Augrabies Falls National Park where I celebrated 60.  And because of heavy rain the falls flowed with a magnificent palpable power.  And also because of the rain our camp was flooded and we splurged on a Chalet.

Pilanesburg Game Reserve South AfricaFrom there our long journey back to Johannesburg where I’d fly out in April and a return to Pilanesberg for 10 days over holiday.  Joan and I talked about our three months traveling together.  Both agreed it was wonderful, maybe just a little too long, and we would miss each other immensely.  We put 5,000 miles on Joan’s truck, camped 80 out of 85 days, and visited 10 national parks, plus a whole lot more.  Another memorable journey for me and every visit I leave a little more of my heart behind in South Africa.

Grand Canyon and surrounds

Lunar Eclipse & North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaAfter returning to Arizona mid-April I had about two weeks to pack and roll to the North Rim for my summer season at Grand Canyon.  I actually managed to stay awake for the first half of the lunar eclipse and got pretty good photos.  During training time the staff went camping at Toroweap, unfortunately the only time I made it out there this year.  We spent a little time on the South Rim for some very informative presentations and even saw condors at Navajo Bridge on the way back.  After cleaning up and preparing for the crowds the North Rim opened on May 15th and we were busy right from the first day.

North Rim Grand Canyon & Zion National ParkIn early June, blogger Pat visited Grand Canyon and after showing her around we also visited Zion National Park.  I just love meeting bloggers as I feel like we’re already friends.  The weather cooperated with Grand Canyon’s annual Star Party that began on Solstice and lasted a week offering visitors incredible views of the night sky through at least a dozen telescopes.

North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaLike climate clockwork monsoon season began in July.  In fact the annual 4th of July water parade was almost rained out, but then we all got wet there anyway.  I discovered a new place to camp along the canyon rim at Jumpup Point although the drive is long and rough so not sure how often I’ll return.  Monsoon storms continued to put on quite a show through August and into September some days filling the canyon with drifting clouds.  Yet the weather gave a break for the North Rim’s annual Heritage Days entertainment and also gave some brilliant rainbow gifts.

Fall aspen Kaibab National Forest ArizonaThen Autumn arrived with bright splashes of golden aspen mixed amongst the deep ever-greens and even showed off a bit of oranges and deep reds in the most brilliant fall I’ve seen there yet.  The colors came on early and hung on into October to the end of my season.

Fall into Winter road trips

OregonI had planned a Fall road trip with a camper to the Pacific Northwest but the camper didn’t come along in time.  So instead, after one week back in Yarnell, my dear friend Berta and I flew to Portland where we visited with some of her family and explored her old stomping grounds in Bandon.  We also managed to squeeze in a bit of the Columbia River Gorge and a dear friend in Washington.  All in ten days.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park CaliforniaI still had itchy feet and continued to hunt for and found a cab-over camper.  So in mid-December I headed off the cold 5,000 feet in Yarnell and headed for the warmer desert finding my way to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California where I sit writing this post.

The most memorable event from this year happened just before Christmas when a terrible assault on my dear friend Joan in South Africa occurred.  She was beaten and robbed of her laptop with no means to replace it.  I asked for help and was overwhelmed at the response and donations.  Sitting with tears of joy literally running down my face it dawned on me what the true spirit of Christmas means.  I avoid all the holiday hubbub.  I ran away to the desert.  Yet my heart was filled with love and caring, because of YOU.  I can’t thank you all enough.  I chatted with Joan Tuesday while she used a borrowed computer and I know she feels this same overwhelming joy.  Enough funds were gathered, and transferred, for her to replace the laptop.  Thank you all from both of us.  And thanks for sharing the memories.

Happy New Year!

Foto Friday Fun 81

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 7 images chosen by readers from my photo archives.  Our meme number for this week is 6661.  Please join in by digging into your archives and sharing a story.  And check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.

Old car Western Legends Round Up Kanab UtahDiane chose #6661, which will be next week’s number, and she likes old cars.  I don’t know what this is but maybe she does.  Taken this past August at the Western Legends Round Up in Kanab Utah, complete with cowboy.  I just happened into town that Saturday having completely forgotten about this annual festival.

Crane Lake State Route 67 Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Crane Lake Interpretive sign State Route 67 Kaibab National Forest ArizonaYogi chose #2108 and gets a different lake from his last week picture on the Kaibab National Forest.  Crane Lake has a convenient pullover with an interpretive sign.

Sea of Cortez from road to Porto Cito Baja MexicoBibi chose #46, “the number of years ago I studied in Aix-en-Provence, France.”.  In 2005 I ‘studied’ relaxology along the Sea of Cortez for a month mostly around San Felipe but also took a road trip to Porto Cito on the Baja Mexico.  I traveled with my dear friend Darlene, who I will soon be visiting in the Pacific Northwest.  With winter coming on I would love to be here soaking up the sun once again.

Deer along Rainbow Rim trail to Parissawampitts Point Kaibab National Forest ArizonaSherry chose #8199.  I know she’ll identify with my difficulty capturing these deer that startled me as I began to walk on the Rainbow Rim trail.  They took off in a hurry and my camera settings were not set for being so close.

Fall aspen along SR67 North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaSallie chose #9989, because I’m almost last.  Almost always.”  I’m sure glad I got out several times to shoot the aspen turning colors because now they are almost gone.

Snow outside RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaElaine chose #1145 and this white stuff should look familiar as she’s already looking at much more of it through the windows of her Alaskan home.  This shot was taken in May this year from my RV window just before staff left for lower elevation with warmer temperatures for a campout at Toroweap.

Three Rondavels Mpumalanga South AfricaJonker chose #764, “thanks to closing my eyes and pushing number buttons.” Sure wouldn’t want to close your eyes when visiting the Three Rondavels in the Blyde River Canyon area of South Africa. The shape of these rock monoliths resembles traditional African style houses.

Fall aspen and Brady Peak from Ken Patrick trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy choice this week may be almost the last of the colorful fall aspen.  A photographer friend set me a challenge of finding a place to see both the golden aspen and the canyon.  I’ve looked along the Widforss trail and in several locations from the Ken Patrick trail.  Aspen tend not to grow very close to the rim and the few that do were the last to turn.  I think this is as good as it’s going to get for this year taken from a section of the Ken Patrick trail and looking at Brady Peak.

Please share your own #6661 photo and story by linking the URL from your post to Mister Linky below.  Then spread the word by linking back to Foto Friday Fun 81.  You can also leave a number between 01 and 9990 in a comment for next week’s Foto Friday Fun.  First commenter will chose next week’s photo index number.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
