Foto Friday Fun 3

This weeks Foto Friday Fun includes seven images chosen by readers who pick a number out of my photo archives.

Blast zone MSHNVM GPNF WA

Arija chose #98, the year her mother was born and added, “not last century but the one before.”  Yet Mount Saint Helens is centuries older than that.  I worked as a Ranger there during the early 1990s and felt honored to watch new growth return every day to the blast zone.

Zip-line Tsitsikamma Adventures Storms River SA

Firefly has also done his choice of the #4500 zip-line in Tsitsikamma, maybe because he doesn’t live too far away.  Here we see the guide Marius zipping fast on his approach to the platform.  This ranks high on my adventure list and I look forward to doing it again.

Unidentified bird at Birds of Eden Plattenberg Bay SA

Sherry choose #5261 a street number in reverse.  She wrote, “This is like playing the lottery except you can’t lose!!”  The lose on this image, I don’t know what kind of bird this is seen at Birds of Eden in Plattenberg Bay, South Africa. Maybe some kind of quail?

Oyster mushrooms

Jo’s choice of #13, the day she was born and her father’s favorite number.  I’m not superstitious but do know to be extremely careful about gathering mushrooms.  This cluster of Oyster mushrooms had a few less after the photo because they are choice edibles.  I learned a lot more about mushrooms as a volunteer at Oregon Caves National Monument.

Pre-storm sunrise CO

Erin went with #2009, the model year of the motorhome currently being lived in full-time.  I lived in a 5th-wheel with this gorgeous sunrise view of the La Platas in Colorado in 2005 when I worked as a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park.

R67 Art The Voting Line Port Elizabeth SA

Last week Janie’s choice showed some of my old art work with world maps in it and she wrote, “it’s obvious that you wanted to see the world, and now you’re having the opportunity!”  Her chosen #4270 this week takes us Port Elizabeth, South Africa where Firefly (see above) guided me through the Art 67 Project where this memorial to Nelson Mandella is displayed in “The Voting Line” which represents people from all walks of life.

Old rusty car Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ

Diane is sticking to her porsche models with #928.  I’m not sure what model this is, or how she keeps getting car images.  This beauty has been parked for a long time up on the Weaver Mountains which is in my backyard.

I hope you’re all enjoying Foto Friday Fun and gives me an opportunity to share more of my 100s of 1000s of photos.  If you’d like to play along, please leave a number between 1 and 7200 in a comment and maybe you can see your chosen image next week.  Which one is your favorite from this week?

Remember to check out the Geogypsytraveler Facebook page for more photos as I label all the images from South Africa I post every 100th shot.

Foto Friday Fun 2

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 10 photos chosen by readers.  Hope you’ll pick out your favorite and join in the fun next week.

Pale Chanting Goshawk Camdeboo NP South Africa

Susie of Arabia really liked last weeks zebra photo and this week chose #2378, a phone number from her past.  I dialed in on this pair of Pale Chanting Goshawks at Camdeboo National Park near Graaff-Reinet during my recent travels to South Africa.

1939 Royals Royce Phantom

Diane likes Porsches so chose #911.  Sorry no Porsches, instead you get a 1939 Royals Royce Phantom that I saw parked at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  Hope that will do.

California Redwood Hogsback Arboretum Hogsback South Africa

Jo’s choice of #3999 this week takes us to the Hogsback Arboretum in South Africa.  I’ll bet she stood in front of this California Redwood only days after I did.

Rainbow on virga over Cedar Mt from Walhalla overlook NR Grand Canyon NP AZ

After liking the red rocks last week it seems appropriate that Barb’s choice includes the red rock of another canyon.  Number 10 was taken from the Walhalla overlook on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  A special treat with a bit of rainbow thrown in.

Watercolor Roses

Because I’m a little dyslexic, this week’s selection of #67 for Arija shows more of my old art work from 1988.  I’ve always wanted to paint with watercolors yet always make mud when mixing paint.  This one at least turned out pink.  And how fitting the flowers are for this gardening lady.

Fall colors N Kaibab NF AZ

Guess I have Sherry fooled into thinking I’m a “fabulous photo artist.”  Really I take so many photos I just get lucky sometimes.  Although I have plenty of fall color images from the Kaibab Plateau her choice of #1980 is rather dull.  Check out Sherry’s site for the lush colors of Florida State Parks.

Side mirror view of Red Butte AZ

Elaine likes the “fabulous stories” I share.  Her random #1001 of Red Butte was taken on the fly as I left the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.  Side mirrors work great when the sun gets in your eyes.

Pencil drawing Livingroom Bakersfield CA

Janie chose #61 because that’s how hold she’ll be this year.  Although that’s not old, this seems to be the week for my old art.  Before digital photography I captured the likeness of places I lived sometimes drawing from my favorite sitting place.  In this case the apartment living room long ago in 1988 when I was still married and we lived in Bakersfield, California for nine months.  Exactly how long the school term was for my step-son.  Notice the maps on the wall?  Even then I dreamed of travel but my ex-husband wanted to cruise the world in a sailboat and I’m really more of a terrestrial person.

Golden Gate Highlands NP South Africa

Lu-Gerda lives in South Africa and I wonder if she’s been to Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State, #2021, where the cliffs turn golden at sunset.

Hippopotamus Kruger NP South Africa

Lynda chose #1307 as the condo number where she’s currently staying.  I hope she doesn’t find any Hippos in San Carlos, Mexico.  If you do, please send them home to Kruger National Park where they belong in South Africa.

I hope you’re all enjoying Foto Friday Fun because it gives me an opportunity to share more of my 100s of 1000s of photos.  If you’d like to play along, please leave a number between 1 and 6000 in a comment and maybe you can see your chosen image next week.  Which one is your favorite?

Foto Friday Fun

Zebra Addo Elephant NP SA

This young Burchell’s Zebra keeps an eye on Mom at Addo Elephant National Park taken 2/18/13

Today I choose a favorite photo for a new idea at Geogypsytraveler, Foto Friday Fun.  (I know it’s not Friday.)  But I have 100s of 1000s of photos/fotos to share.  So no time like the present to start sharing those memories of the past.

Here’s the new idea.  At some point during the week I will ask for a random number from commenters between 1 and 5000,  then Friday will post the chosen photo number from my archives, along with a story of course.  Yes, I am anal enough to number—starting with 001 every month—and label all my photos.  Only about half way through over 10,000 from the trip to South Africa alone.  So if you want to see a photo from the old archives you can optionally include a month and year starting at March 26, 1954 (my birth day) with more limitations the further back in time.

If the chosen number belongs to a blogger/website owner, a link to their site can be provided on “Foto Friday Fun” along with the photo.  Feel free to link back and let your friends in on the fun.

Please let me know what you think, make suggestions and recommendations.  I love getting your input.  And I’ll see how this works.

BTW, as I’ve been labeling photos from my recent journey in South Africa I post every 100th one.  So if you want to share more of the journey check out Geogypsytraveler’s Facebook page here.  Or just drop by and say “Hi.”

And if you really like this,  Tweet using #fotofridayfun

Please leave a number from 1 to 5000 in comments for this coming Foto Friday Fun photo.  Thanks for playing along.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
