Foto Friday Fun 6

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 8 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  I so enjoy dipping into memories from over six years ago to less than six months ago.

Honey Badger at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre Plettenberg Bay SA

Arija picked her sister’s birthday #5534 and wrote, “she was one of those rare people walking this earth who not only helped everyone around her, but also thought well of all she met.”  I’ll bet she would have also liked this little beggar Honey Badger that I saw at Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa.  Just look at those claws that are made for digging.  It was reaching for the guide’s heavily booted foot.

Swing in boulders along private road Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ

Diane wrote, “My friend is getting his 910 Porsche ready for a race next month so that looks like it will have to be my new number.”  I wouldn’t mind watching a car race from this lovely swing yet the view might be tough as it’s sitting on the side of the Weaver Mountains in Yarnell, Arizona.  And the nearest house can be seen in the distance so I don’t know who uses it other than me when I take a walk outside my back door.

Waterfall Golden Gate Highlands NP R712 Free State SA

Susie’s “pic for next Friday is 2007 – the year I moved to Saudi Arabia.”  Being it’s pretty dry where she lives I’m not sure how many waterfalls she gets to see.  This photo was taken at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.  This is the park’s natural swimming pool but I’d have needed a warmer day to take a dip in these chilly mountain feed waters.

Valley view from Shale trail Karoo Botanical Garden Worcester SA

Jo’s request this week is #9000 “as I love the number nine and anything divisible by nine!”  Being Jo is from South Africa she might recognize this valley view from the Shale Trail at Karoo Botanical Garden in Worcester.  Some absolutely wonderful plants grew along this short loop trail but I didn’t tarry long because here it was sweaty warm under the afternoon sun.

ORCA Chalet

Judy chose #11 for “the number of National Wildlife Refuges I have volunteered at since I went full-time.”  Oregon Caves is a National Monument, instead of a Wildlife Refuge, and is closed during winter when I volunteered there.  Thank goodness for snow shoes to get around outside but once in the cave it was a balmy 42F.

Airplane view near Fredonia AZ

Sherry chose #1010 for her “childhood phone number.”   I give a 10 to the experience of flying over Grand Canyon after rafting the Colorado River, also a 10.  And of course this is not the canyon.  Even familiar landscapes look a whole lot different from the air and I’ve driven that paved road, SR89A in the lower corner, many times.

Knysna Lagoon from Guinea Fowl Lodge Knysna SA

Firefly chose #5651 “by closing my eyes and punching numbers.”  I’m sure he doesn’t close his eyes when driving to Knysna Lagoon not to far from where he lives in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.  I enjoyed this pre-sunset view from the deck of Guinea Fowl Lodge with friends.

Ferns in the Redwoods CA

Erin chose #21 because “it’s the site number we’re in here at the campground.”  Which is in Gulf Shores, Alabama where it’s been raining a lot lately.  Takes a lot of rain to grow ferns like these found in the California Redwoods where I often hiked when working at Oregon Caves National Monument.

Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun.  If you’d like to leave a number between 1 and 9500 in a comment maybe you can see your chosen image next week.  Which one is your favorite from this week?

Foto Friday Fun 5

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 12 images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives.  I hope you’ll enjoy the many National Park and wildlife images for this week.

Sunrise on waves at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma NP SA

Jo chose “6332, our landline telephone number when we lived on the diamond mines of Namibia.”  The sun sparkles like diamonds on these waves at Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma National Park.  I sat for hours entranced by these gems and took many 100s of photos.

Raven on truck tire

Arija picked “1898, the year my wonderfully resilient mother was born. She was the epitome of mother earth.”  I’m guessing your Mother would have appreciated the resourcefulness of this Raven finding a convenient meal of bugs from the wheel well of my truck parked at Grand Canyon.

Wire Pass slot canyon trail GRSE NM UT

Diane keeps choosing Porsche model numbers, 914 this week.  But not even a Porsche would slip through this crack in the rock.  Wire Pass slot canyon isn’t for driving through anyway.  In fact sometimes I had to turn sideways between the towering sandstone cliffs to squeeze through.

Gopher snake

Keeping with Sherry’s love for all things nature her choice of #66 crossed my trail while working at Mesa Verde National Park.  This harmless Gopher snake had to be at least three feet long.  It startled me and although I’m not keen on snakes I just had to take it’s photo.

Rufuos hummingbird NR GRCA NP AZ

Barb chose #567 for three more of her grandkid’s ages.  They are young but not as small as this Rufus Hummingbird spotted out my back window last year at the canyon.  Almost time to put the feeders out again.

Baja MX

Elaine seems ready for spring in Alaska but chose “the temperature as my number for next week:  28.”  The temperature was more like 28C (82F) back in 2005 when I visited friends in San Felipe, Baja Mexico.  The guys held up that rock for me to walk under.  Wasn’t that chivalrous of them.  Winking smile

Fog Kaibab NF AZ

Susie’s favorite photo last week, like many others, was sunset over the Indian Ocean because it’s “moody.”  This fog along Highway 67 in the Kaibab National Forest  looks rather moody as well.  Susie’s choice of #310 “for March 10th – the birthday of both of my grand-daughters, but 20 years apart!”

Red-winged Starling Knysna SA

Melissa commented, “I’m thinking of 5689 in honor of my son’s birthday.  May 6, 1989.”  I’m thinking there’s no correlation to this red-winged starling that repeatedly snagged some placed corn on the porch rail.  Marta at Guinea Fowl Lodge in Knysna South Africa said it came every day and there’s a nest nearby.

Sunset over Widforss Plateau NR GRCA NP AZ

Sallie says she’s “a sucker for sunsets” and chose #208 which just happens to be a sunset over the Widforss Plateau at Grand Canyon National Park.  Did you know that Ranger’s get paid in sunsets?

Dark Chanting Goshawk Camdeboo NP SA

Jonker is still choosing high numbers that “will bring up beautiful SA pics” and no wonder because he lives in South Africa.  His choice of #7158 features a Dark Chanting Goshawk at Camdeboo National Park.  Think it’s looking for a meal?

View from Echo Ravine trail Golden Gate Highlands NP SA

Chris chose #1982 for no particular reason and mentioned the memories that go with photos.  So right.  From here I remember thinking, did we really walk this far up the side of a mountain?  Yet Echo Ravine trail provided amazing views at Golden Gate Highlands National Park and later we walked to the waterfall you can see just left of center.  Good memories all.

Warthog Addo Elephant NP SA

Erin chose #2994, “the number of the home we sold before beginning our fulltime life on the road.”  At Addo Elephant National Park I saw numerous warthogs along the road.  Seems I hear a lot of people say they’re ugly, but I think the youngsters are especially fine looking with that dashing mustache.

Thank you for playing along.  I hope you’re all enjoying Foto Friday Fun because it gives me an opportunity to share some of my 100s of 1000s of photos.  If you’d like to leave a number between 1 and 9000 in a comment maybe you can see your chosen image next week.  Which one is your favorite from this week?

Foto Friday Fun 4

This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes nine images chosen by readers picking a number out of my photo archives. Seems to be a National Park theme going on.  But then I visit a lot of parks.

Sunrise & dolphins at Tsitsikamma NP Storms River Mouth SA

Arija chose 1958 as “ the year my darling daughter graced this world with her presence.”  These dolphins graced my view during sunrise at Tsitsikamma National Park in South Africa.

Dam above waterfall Golden Gate Highlands NP SA

Lu-Gerda chose 2012, a location in her home country at Golden Gate Highlands National Park South Africa.

Waterfall & pool reflection Wild Spirit Backpackers Lodge Nature's Valley SA

Melissa was reminded of an old phone number when she chose 4868.  I was reminded of heaven when this image of the waterfall corresponded with that number.  This was taken at Wild Spirit Backpackers Lodge, a place I long to return to.

Grand Canyon from South Rim

Barb chose 810, “ages of 3 oldest grands.”  That doesn’t quite add up to me but this view of Grand Canyon from the Hermit Road on the South Rim sure does.

Gray Heron Mt Zebra NP Eastern Cape SA

Sherry chooses 2780 which is so appropriate for her regular heron sightings in Florida, but this one I saw at Mountain Zebra National Park in South Africa.

Golden Gate Highlands NP SA

Janie chose the current year of 2013.  Back to Golden Gate Highlands National Park with the stream that feeds the pool seen in #2012.

Old rusty car Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ

Diane keeps choosing Porsche model numbers and this weeks #924 brings her yet another car, just not a Porsche.  This rusty rig is seen up in the Weaver Mountains near my winter Yarnell home.  Maybe she knows what model it is.

Jacob Lake fire tower Kaibab NF AZ

Jo chose 2003, “the year our precious granddaughter, Eryn was born.”  Knowing how adventurous Eryn is, I’ll bet she’d climb to the top of this fire tower near Jacob Lake, Arizona if given the chance.

Sunset Storms River Mouth Tsitsikamma NP SA

Firefly randomly picks #6193.  Yet he knows those high numbers will show him somewhere in his beautiful country of South Africa, like this sunset over the Indian Ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park.

I hope you’re all enjoying Foto Friday Fun because it gives me an opportunity to share more of my 100s of 1000s of photos.  If you’d like to play along, please leave a number between 1 and 8200 in a comment and maybe you can see your chosen image next week.  Which one is your favorite from this week?

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
