Solstice moon dancing with clouds at Grand Canyon

June 20, 2016

Mount Hayden haze Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Point Imperial would be the place with a grand eastern view for the Solstice moon rise, except for a heavy haze of smoke from fires south of Grand Canyon plus the low clouds.

Hazy sunset Mount Hayden Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Sunset at 7:48 wouldn’t really be visible from my chosen moon rise location at 7:56.

Sunset thru trees Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaIn fact I figured I’d made a mistake when I saw the pastel view to the ESE and tried to catch a blood red ball at sunset through the trees.

Sunset & haze Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Walked down the upper Ken Patrick trail a wee bit with compass in hand looking for a view with Mount Hayden and a little foreground, yet I held no hope for a horizon line moon rise.

Set up the tripod, a very rare occurrence for me, and focused on where I thought the moon might rise.

Moon through clouds Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaThirty minutes later as it got darker I was ready to give up.  Packed the camera and headed back to the parking lot.  Two other Rangers were there so we chatted and finally the moon made a slight appearance between the clouds.  We all hurriedly set up tripods and started experimenting with camera settings.  The moon wasn’t giving us much light.

Then the clouds slid back over the moon and we could barely see any glow at all.

Yet we still stood in awe and talked about the beginning of summer.  Then more glow appeared on the edge of the clouds.

And soon we could see the moon itself trying to break through as it climbed higher in the sky.

But this was like a dance with the clouds also continuing to rise in an effort to obscure the moon.

Full moon Point Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaAnd when the moon finally won we all scrambled to change camera settings to reduce the brilliance but lost sight of the clouds.  Then I changed to my 55-300mm lens and enjoyed the late strawberry moon as big as I could make it.

But the clouds returned.

By 9:30 the clouds were drifting in again and I call it quits.  So much for a huge Solstice moon rise over Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

Clouds across northern Arizona

For the last three days clouds across northern Arizona teased the Grand Canyon with brief sprinkles of rain but mostly just a fabulous show.

Clouds above Marble Canyon SR89A ArizonaLeft the North Rim with a fellow Ranger Monday afternoon.  The other five of our Ranger staff had taken five days to hike rim to rim and we met them on the South Rim for two days of training.

Cloud tipped temples Lippan Point South Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMade a quick stop at Lipan Point because it was just too beautiful not to with tiny clouds tickling the tips of the temples.

Sunset cloud South Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaIt was a great training with lots of new information and ideas but did mean spending our days indoors.  By the time we’d get done with dinner it was either too late or we were too tired to get to the rim for what looked like it would have been gorgeous sunsets.

Sun glow on Vermilion Cliffs SR89A ArizonaNo time to stop so I shot through the window. Only brief sprinkles fell. I am so blessed to live in this spectacular land.

Grand Canyon hide and seek

Looking at Bright Angel Point North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Yes, those are people on the rocks out on Bright Angel Point

Saturday I worked the early schedule starting at the awful hour of 6:30am. It is always difficult for me to get up at my self-inflicted hour of 4:30. I’m just one of those people that needs two hours to wake up over coffee and blogs.

Bright Angel Canyon filled with cloud

Then I got to my canyon office view and I’m all awake with the help of a gentle rain. Every time a surprise in store. Yet I’d never seen the canyon full of clouds like this with the temple islands floating in a frothy sea. I got so lost I was almost late opening the visitor center.

After a couple hours of answering the same question, “Do you think the clouds will go away?” I headed out to the Walhalla Plateau not knowing what to expect but taking my rain gear with me. Do these people think I’m a meteorologist or a seer?

Point Imperial fogged in North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

First stop, Point Imperial, the highest elevation viewpoint in the park at 8803 feet (2683 meters). Sorry, no views today. And yes, that would be a great view of Mt Hayden and the confluence of the Little Colorado with the Colorado River.

This is the clear day real view.

I continued out the scenic road to the Walhalla overlook to give a 1pm History of Southwestern Archeology talk with a similar pea soup backdrop. Only a little clearing occurred, but I was too busy answering the “Will it clear up?” question to take many photos.

Cloud shrouded canyon along Cape Royal trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Next I went to Cape Royal at the end of the road for a 2:30pm geology talk and maybe the canyon would make an appearance. At first there was little hope of a full show. Then just as I finished…

Although some visitors had been disappointed by the canyon closure all day, those who waited it out where treated to a very different view of the many moods of the canyon.

Plus they got to see the Colorado River flow its true colors because of the flash of sediments from the upstream Paria and Little Colorado Rivers.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
