Cape of Good Hope and Storms

Cape of Good Hope sign & Atlantic Ocean Table Mountain National Park Cape Pennisula South Africa

The Cape of Good Hope is not the southern most point in Africa, that honor goes to Cape Agulhas about 90 miles east where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.  First named the “Cape of Storms” by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 and later renamed by John II, the king of Portugal, as Cape of Good Hope because of the great optimism of this sea route to India and he East.

Still very exciting to me, Cape Point is the southern most point in Table Mountain National Park which also includes the Boulders Penguin Colony, Silvermine, Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Lions Head.

Cape of Good Hope South Africa

I felt like a bloody tourist hurrying to the next sight to take a few photos, jump back in the car, and speed off to the next stop.  Not my usual mode of slow and take it all in travel.

01a Cape of Good Hope entrance station Table Mt NP Cape Peninsula ZA (1024x504)

After almost a month of exploring from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park, Monks Cowl in the Drakensberg, and the Garden Route along the Indian Ocean I would finally visit the Cape of Good Hope before this journey ended.

02a M65 S Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x498)

I’d been gifted with multiple rainbows and only a few drizzles along the coastal drive from Hermanus.  But even a downpour wasn’t going to keep me from getting to the Cape.  This lush landscaped peninsula must experience amazing storm activity situated between two major ocean currents.

03a Ostrich by Atlantic Ocean M65 S Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula AZ (1024x610)

And the last thing I expected to find here was ostriches having last seen them, and ridden one, back in the dryer Oudtshoorn area of the Little Karoo.

04a Birds on rock & waves crashing Cape of Good Hope Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x768)

At any stop along the way I could have just sat listening to the surf, watching the waves and birds.

But alas, I was in a hurry and Needed the obligatory photo above.  In fact everybody kind of politely waits in a makeshift Q taking turns being photographed and helping out those folks who are traveling alone like myself.

06a Road to Buffels Bay into False Bay Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x618)

Wanting to get to my accommodations before dark I only explored one of the many side roads in this part of Table Mountain National Park.

07a Seagulls Buffels Bay Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x703)

The beach at Buffels Bay shows only a part of the amazing variety of marine life found in this region.

08a Shell beach and bay Buffels Bay Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x768)

And could be a shell collector’s dream, if not in a National Park.

09a De Gamma cross from Buffels Bay Table Mt NP Cape Pennisula ZA (1024x577)

There is just so much to see I’ll have to return.

A day of rainbows in South Africa

Rainbow R44 Western Cape South Africa

The day after my birthday I left Hermanus and drove along the southern coast through Kogelbrg Biosphere Reserve. It was a day of cloudy skies and intermittent rain.

Yet I was blessed all day with rainbows in South Africa. More than I could take pictures of while driving.

I made it to the Cape of Good Hope that afternoon.

South Africa Cape of Good Hope, rainbows, travel 20 Comments

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate
