Lone Rock beach Lake Powell


After being chased out by an oncoming storm on a quick hike from the Toadstools trail I headed east to camp for the night at Lone Rock beach along Lake Powell in Utah.

The stormy sky made for a great sunset over Lone Rock.

And a great sunrise too.
It sprinkled most of the night. I know because I was awake not able to sleep on the deflated air mattress.

I had concerns with the possibility of hard rain cancelling my tour of Antelope Slot Canyon, not the place to be in a possible flash flood.

Cedar Canyon Breaks for City Utah


After I left Navajo Lake I headed to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long as I still needed to get to Cedar City to shop and get an oil change.

So I continued west on scenic State Route 14.

Which lies north of Zion National Park.

The road continues downhill through forest that shows the standing dead of a bark beetle kill off. Yet there are also trees decades old to carry on.

Continuing west I drop off the Colorado Plateau through Cedar Canyon which follows Coal Creek.
Cedar City lies in a valley below at almost 6000 feet (1829 km). Of course it took me longer than planned to get all my stops made in this unknown town.

Because that’s four hours from the North Rim and I prefer not to drive in the dark I decided to camp in the Dixie National Forest at Cedar Canyon campground then return to Cedar Breaks National Monument the next day. (I will post Cedar Breaks soon, I promise.)

Camping at Navajo Lake


Navajo Lake formed when lava flowed across the east end of this valley thousands of years ago. The dike was constructed in 1931 to provide adequate water for fisheries and recreation.

Navajo Lake Lodge rents cabins and boats.

Plus there’s three National Forest campgrounds spread out along the south shore of the lake.

I opted for the Navajo Lake campground. It was crowded and noisy in the lakeside camp area yet almost empty just up the hill.

Wildlife ate wildflowers all around my campsite.

While some looked for scraps elsewhere. Yuk!

I walked down to the lake and split my photo time between sunset and this unknown shorebird.

This turned out to be a perfect place to camp before going to Cedar Breaks National Monument.
