Foto Friday Fun 444

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by nine readers including diverse skies because I am a nepholographer, roads because I’m also a “street” photographer, my Mom in the 1940s, and a wee bit more.

Sunset thru storm clouds Vallecito Mts Anza-Borrego Desert State Park California

Biological soil crust sign on compost toilet at Tuweep Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJim and Diana chose #2525, “which is not only a one-hit wonder by Zager and Evans, but is also the year the Lions will finally win a Super Bowl.”  I didn’t know lions ate out of bowls, but that’s later in this post.  The oldest shot with their number from 2010 is a sign posted on the compost outhouse at Toroweap campground about the fragile cryptobiotic soil crust that is full of life.  So I decided to give them another photo of a sunset through the storm clouds taken through a dirty camper window at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.

Sunrise Anza-Borrego Desert State Park CaliforniaCathy chose #3576.  From the same visit to Anza-Borrego as above, this time a sunrise.

Clay pot with berries made at campfire program North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaRita chose #206.  Perfect for an archaeologist, although this piece is not an artifact, yet.  Created at the campfire program I presented at the North Rim Grand Canyon about clay coming to the ancient people.  The young visitor said “it’s a pot with berries”.

400 Rd Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument UtahTreDeuce chose #6105.  A narrow backroad in Grand Staircase Escalante, the kind I love to go on and am happy when someone has a vehicle to do it.

Fog in canyon Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaDiane and Nigel chose #2611.  A foggy day at Grand Canyon.

Lions on road Kruger National Park South AfricaAlan chose #4959.  If you get out early on safari it is common to see lions just waking on the warm pavement in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

June Loomis High School graduation 1940sSherry chose #4.  My Mom’s high school graduation sometime in the 1940s.

Camo painted motorhome North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJo chose #2711.  Spotted this camo painted motorhome at the North Rim Grand Canyon.

Gaelyn & old Navajo Bridge shadows ArizonaSallie and Bill chose #1221, “the official first day of winter” that will soon be upon us.  I will be further south, and hopefully warmer, than standing on Navajo Bridge in northern Arizona where this shadow shot was taken 9-10-09.

Wickenburg Gem show Nov 2005

Wickenburg Gem show Nov 2005My choices from 2005 when I sold at the Wickenburg Gem Show held the weekend after Thanksgiving.  The second shot, lower right, is the metate I posted about in the last post.

Doin’ a whole lot of nuthin’

RV window view Mule Deer Skull Valley ArizonaNot much to say because I’ve been doin’ a whole lot of nuthin’.  Why?  Mostly because it’s cold in the mornings and evenings and, for me, only tolerable outside for a couple hours mid-day.  And I do try to get outside but it doesn’t always happen.  Other than before I go to bed if the temperature is predicted below 34°, and then I go outside to turn off the water overnight so it don’t freeze.

trees mt sunset clouds Skull Valley ArizonaI’ve told myself several times that I can go further south, any time, where the temperatures are at least 10° warmer than Skull Valley.  Then the sun comes out, I go for a walk or sit outside and read, and don’t pack to leave for yet another day.  In the morning when it’s cold and I’m hoovered over a heater I think once again about being someplace warmer, but it’s too cold to pack and leave.  It will happen.  I am slowly packing a few things.  But it’s really hard to pack until the last minute because it’s mostly stuff I use every day.  Already have pots, pans, dishes, silverware and more aboard the camper all the time.  I’ll have to winterize the 5th-wheel while I’m gone an indeterminate amount of time, as in weeks or months.

Thanksgiving dinner Skull Valley ArizonaThanksgiving came and I was really excited about having oven baked organic duck for dinner.  It’s a family tradition as we didn’t like turkey and loved dark meat fowl.  Only took a couple hours with no stuffing and smelled divine.  My neighbor had given me a Costco container each of mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, knowing she couldn’t eat both from the packaging of two each.  I also had some green beans with bacon, like mom used to do.  Sadly, the duck was tough.  But I ate enough of it to satisfy my annual desire and I made one cold duck sandwich, another favorite, with leftovers.  Other than labeling a whole lot of photos, I spent the rest of the day doin’ a whole lot of nuthin’.

Red-tailed Hawk bird on pole Ferguson Valley Rd Skull Valley ArizonaRed-tailed Hawk

Black Friday, no shopping for me thank goodness.  But I went into town (Skull Valley 10 minutes away has no businesses or services) to mail calendars and drop garbage at the dump but the later was closed due to the holiday and are only open three days a week normally.  Dang it.  Here on the ranch I feed the pigs my organic garbage, burn the burnables, and the rest goes to the landfill/recycling.  If I was hangin’ round I’d buy an animal proof garbage can to hold a couple bags.  Instead they ride in the camper until the following week.

Joann & Gaelyn shadow hiking Skull Valley ArizonaSauntering Saturday when Joann came over and we took a nearby walk starting on a rocky OHV two-track.  My landlord had told me about a native ruin in that area.  One of those turn left at the large Alligator Juniper type of directions.  Which we did, twice, and found no ruins but it sure is pretty country.  Plus I needed the exercise.

metate & mano on berm Skull Valley ArizonaFunny thing, Joann returned my metate (native grinding stone) that I gave her when I left Yarnell in 2019.  I bought it in 2005 at a yard sale my first year in Yarnell.  It was presumably found near Bagdad, Arizona less than 50 miles west of Skull Valley.  I actually hauled it around for several years between summer and winter RV home sites.  Must weigh about 100 lbs.  Became comical with us moving it out of her van into my yard where it now sits proudly on the berm, with the mano.  I can put water in it for the birds.

Southern Utah agate & Southern Arizona rocks on berm Skull Valley ArizonaAgate on the left & desert right

That motivated me to put out some rocks I’ve been hauling around for a couple years.  I left rocks at Berta’s place in Yarnell for a lot of years.  The colorful Agate came from southern Utah.  Every winter I gather a few rocks here and there.  I usually share a photo of what ends up on the bumper before I leave a site.  So there’s some of them here now also.

rocks & metate & mano on berm Skull Valley ArizonaI sure do like having a safe place to leave my rocks.  Later as I sat outside admiring the view I dreamed of planting wildflowers and started looking up what grows local in zone 8.  OMG, I’m landscaping!

book Sierra cat on lap Skull Valley ArizonaSo I told you up front, I’ve been doin’ a whole lot of nuthin’ for the past week, or more.  Sure feels good.  I am finally starting to decompress from a summer of crazy at Bryce Canyon National Park.  I foresee a move further south next week, or so.  Because it’s gettin’ cold here at 4500 feet.

Foto Friday Fun 443

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including my youth and before my time, with travels to the Southwest and South Africa too.

Old rusty car Weaver Mts Yarnell ArizonaLisa chose #915.  Although I don’t know what kind of vehicle this is (what’s left anyway) it’s certainly from before my time.  While walking in the Weaver Mountains many years ago in Yarnell I came across this rusty relic.

desert ruin storm clouds FR545 Wupatki National Monument ArizonaJeff chose #602, “the length of last nights eclipse.”  Imagine living over 1000 years ago when an unexplainable eclipse occurred.  You can just barely see a Native ruin right of center seen in Wupatki National Monument in Arizona.  I was there 4-16-09 and it snowed.

Bunting Trail Kanab UtahRita chose #3322.  Nature’s rock art displays bedding planes and minerals on a sandstone boulder seen along the Bunting Trail in Kanab, Utah.  The trail leads to dinosaur tracks.

Drakensberg hike KwaZulu-Natal South AfricaDiane and Nigel chose #1911.  The luscious rolling green hiked through in the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa in March 2010.

Sunset at Sunset dam Kruger National Park South AfricaDoris chose #3775.  Appropriately named Sunset Dam, a great stop before rushing back to camp before the gates close.  Kruger National Park South Africa 2-13-14.

Badwater Basin mts sunset Death Valley National Park CaliforniaSue chose #2045, “for the date it will probably be before I ever get to Africa.”  She’d be 100 years old then.  At this time in history it’s possible she’ll live that long.  But in the meantime, she could settle with the more nearby Death Valley National Park and get a sunset view over Badwater Basin and Telescope Peak.

Ray Olmsted's boat Six-Pac on the Illinois River Fall 1969Sherry chose #3.  My dad’s powerboat sitting almost high and dry along the shore of the Illinois River as the barge going by pulls the water in an undertow.  The boat’s name was Six-Pac as dad said it wouldn’t run without at least that much beer on board, and there was always more than that.  Taken in 1969 and later scanned.

frozen waterfall Kaskaski Canyon Starve Rock State Park Ottawa Illinois March 1975Jennifer got #11 for the number of words in her last comment.  A rather lousy film shot from March 1975 later scanned.  A frozen waterfall at the head of Kaskaski Canyon in Starve Rock State Park in Ottawa, Illinois.  This was a favorite place to visit in my youth and I returned during 2012 when I went to my 40th high school reunion.

Sunset over Vermilion Cliffs Hwy 89A East Kaibab National Forest ArizonaSallie and Bill chose #1128, their anniversary.  How about an anniversary panorama sunset over the Vermilion Cliffs from August, 2010.  A favorite stop of mine along SR89A and I must have been headed back to the North Rim.

Up stream from old Navajo Bridge Echo Cliffs & Colorado River Marble Canyon ArizonaCathy chose #1202.  Another must stop place along SR89A, Navajo Bridge, where it’s likely to see California Condors, and this wonderful view upstream of the Colorado River in Marble Canyon.

caveman wedding millers chapel Oregon Caves National Monument Oregon 1944 NPS archivesAlan chose #1944.  OK, not my photo, but I just couldn’t resist.  This staged wedding shot taken in 1944 in Millers Chapel along the tour route in Oregon Caves National Monument.  The photo is in my history archives from when I worked at the cave beginning in 2002.

Darlene modeling jewelry Yucca Valley California fleamarket Nov 2002

Gaelyn Joshua Tree National Park California Nov 2002

Gaelyn Joshua Tree National Park California Nov 2002After that season at Oregon Caves, I caravanned from Washington to southern California in November 2002 with my dear friend and life mentor Darlene.  We lived in our RVs and sold at a fleamarket in Yucca Valley where she is modeling some of my jewelry.  I visited nearby Joshua Tree National Park more than a few times.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

I am currently…
