Nothing could be harder for me about travel than…

I love to travel and explore new places, people and cultures.  I love to research and plan for a trip.  But nothing could be harder for me about travel than purchasing my airline tickets.

I don’t know why it’s so hard to push that final button once all the information is plugged in.  It’s not about the money.  I really want to go.  But it’s hard to make the final commitment.  I hope I’m not the only person that deals with this.

Johannasburg airport South Africa

I research on all the booking agents online.  Spending hours comparing prices.  Plus there’s the fact that on long international flights, 24-36 hours to reach the final destination, there are layovers.  Do I want to hang out at Heathrow in London for 4-7 hours in January when it’s too cold for me to leave the airport?  How about Phoenix to someplace in Canada, then maybe Denmark before the final destination?  Then there’s the fact that I like to land in the morning, after rush hour, and get on with the new day which will be 9 hours off from my usual biological clock.  And when returning, land around noon because I still have a two hour shuttle ride plus another hour by a friend to get home.

So after all that, I pick what seems like the best option at the best price only to be told it’s no longer available.  But funny thing because the next day, it’s back, but the price went up almost $200.  What’s up with that.  I’m not traveling over any holidays.

And unfortunately I haven’t been smart enough in the past to accumulate air miles.  That has changed but won’t do me any good until the next flight.

Am I the only traveler that has this problem?

Five reasons I do not travel on holidays

I have to admit, I rarely celebrate holidays let alone travel on holidays.  Most holidays seem a bit overrated.  Other than my birthday which just passed.  I’m sure this comment will make a lot of people unhappy.  But I’m just telling it like it is for me.

I do realize that holidays with long weekends might be the only time some people can travel.  So go for it.  And hopefully you’ll make plans way ahead of time to get reservations where needed.

Rush hour traffic

Number one, I hate the traffic over holidays.  Everyone in such a rush to get there and pack in as much as possible over their allotted time.

overloaded Mexican bus

Number two, public transportation is crowded and often booked way ahead. I made that mistake once in Mexico trying to bus around during Christmas time.

Number three, finding a place to stay is a nightmare and I don’t usually make reservations.  However in 2010 while traveling in South Africa I struggled to even make a reservation near Simon’s Town during Easter break.  One of the reasons I cut this year’s trip short even though it meant not celebrating my birthday overseas.

crowded restaurant

Number four, restaurants are packed and waiting lines are long and time consuming.  I’ve actually given up waiting and picked up food at a nearby grocery store instead.

crowded overlook NPS photo

Number five, it’s crowded once you get there.  Don’t get me wrong, I like people.  But I don’t like to elbow my way to overlooks or take photos that include the heads of many strangers.

partially eaten chocolate bunnies

Having said this,  I wish you all a happy Easter holiday.  And please, don’t eat too many chocolate bunnies.

Would you rather stay home or travel over holidays?

Home from South Africa

Lesson learned, don’t buy so much stuff that I need to also buy another piece of luggage to get it all home from South Africa.

Luggage on trolley Cape Town airport SA

Left Cape Town Wed at 2pm for a two hour flight to Johannesburg.  Then a four hour layover with rechecking luggage plus through security twice and I was back in the air for 16 hours to New York’s JFK.  Had three hours there to once again recheck the luggage because it was my port of entry into the US.  Then the final five hour leg to Phoenix.  Plus a two hour shuttle ride to Prescott where Berta picked me up, almost literally as I was totally exhausted.

Sunset Yarnell AZ

Thursday night’s Yarnell sunset didn’t disappoint as I wearily looked at all the unpacking to leave for another day.  Was so nice to sleep in my own bed and know I didn’t have to get too early in the morning.

SA goodies for me

After a trip to the dentist on Friday I started to dig out the goodies gathered for myself and friends.  This doesn’t include all the cute clothes I bought either.

SA goodies for friends

Saturday I caught up with reading many blogs.  But it seems I’m falling asleep at the computer earlier than usual.  My biological clock seems to want me in bed by 10pm and up 5:30am.  Not my past pattern at home when I’m more like 11/12 to 7 asleep.

Receipts from SA

And Sunday I pulled out all the receipts from this 46 day journey and started to figure out what I really spent.

Full suitcase

Still haven’t unpacked everything and the house is a mess.  Oh well, guess I have some time as I don’t return to Grand Canyon until the end of April, or to South Africa until at least late fall.

Yet, there’s no place like home.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
