What makes my feet itch to be on the road

Gaelyn's feet & view NE Cape Final trail North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaI just can’t seem to sit in one place very long before my feet itch to be on the road again.  Some people like to travel in real time, others from their chair, some not at all.  That’s OK.  To each their own.  But I’ve been a wanderlust since childhood.

Recently reading a post by Island Momma about her wanderlust story sure struck a cord.  I think we must be long lost sisters.  Yet I’ll bet we’re not alone.

Lion Kruger National Park South AfricaThe early influence of 1960s TV opened my eyes to the world, even if not quite as connected as the internet.  The Wonderful World of Disney brought nature and wildlife into our living-rooms.  Marlin Perkins Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom took us around the world.  National Geographic magazine often caused me to giggle at photos of half-naked people living in seemingly exotic places that I longed to see.  Books like Robinson Caruso dropped me on a deserted island and the Hobbit lead me on adventures into the unknown.  I became Joy Adamson living in the bush with Else the lion, and the movie Born Free may have enticed me to visit Africa many decades later.  I dreamed myself into these amazing sights and vistas.  The fact that there were very few women didn’t deter me a bit. This was the 60s, and we could grow up to be anything we wanted.

Spruce Tree House Mesa Verde National Park ColoradoMy parents had no desire to travel out of the US but we made several trips across country to visit Grandparents, Illinois to California and back with the whiz of the billboards.  This prompted me to take my first solo road trip in my Vega during the 70s with a dog visiting National Parks in the Southwest.  I was hooked.  Everywhere I went people asked me if I was afraid to travel alone.  At first yes, but I learned that I’m OK company and have met so many wonderful people along the journey.  I follow my intuition and that’s kept me safe so far.

Sunset over Weaver Mountains Iron Springs Road ArizonaI have always been curious about the natural world.  What’s on the other side of that hill, mountain, lake, ocean, desert and stream and how do I get there.  Later, people, cultures and history grabbed my attention.  Now I want to know it all.  I tend to research before a trip, collect information while there, ask questions, plus follow up afterwards.  The world is such an amazing place with so much to learn and so many places to see and people to meet.

I love sharing my journeys through stories and photos and hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.  If only I could have blogged back in the 70s.  How I wish I still had my journals and photos from those days.  Thank goodness I still have the memories.

RV & fall aspen North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaMy wheelestate has changed over time to the current 36 feet which only gets moved twice a year. But I satisfy my itchy feet with local weekend jaunts and three visits to South Africa so far.

Arizona map & National Park listNow that I have the smaller camper I’ll be hitting the road again soon.  Still working out the tie-downs, not cheap for the necessary safety, and need to replace at least one propane tank.  I have one trip planned for mid-January to Quartzsite, Arizona to meet up with friends.  But I’d really like to head south before then.  Perhaps December in the southern desert to explore places around the Coronado National Forest like Saguaro National Park, Chiricahua National Monument and more.  As always, I’m open to suggestions and would love to meet up with you somewhere down the road.

So I guess this wanderlust is in my genes from someone.  After only a couple weeks back from Oregon I feel restless and my feet itch to be on the road, again.

What inspires you to wander?

Bought a ticket to…

Historical museum Portland OregonHistorical Museum taken 1997 (the only pic I have from Portland)

I bought a ticket to Portland, Oregon.  Seems my dear friend Berta is flying there the end of October, and now so am I.  Even got on the same flights.  Though we may have to work it a bit to sit together.

We’ll be gone for a week, share the expense of renting a car and hotels.  This will save us both some dollars.  And we get to visit our dear friend Darlene in Washington.  Will be a gathering of the three amigas.

Many types of travelers

If you travel there are almost as many types of travelers as destinations. Where do you fit in?

01 old-lady-sits_~k2887812

The stay at home traveler

The ‘in between time’ of travel. That’s me recently.  I’m usually out and about all the time when working or traveling then in between I stay home almost like a hermit.  But I am researching and planning for the next trip.

02 armchair traveler

“Armchair traveler”

So you don’t really want to go but love to be taken to far away places from the comforts of home.  Paging through National Geographic magazines, watching documentaries, reading and dreaming of exotic places around the world.

03 vector-of-a-late-cartoon-man-running-with-luggage-by-ron-leishman-25244

Full-time traveler

On the go all the time.  Quit the 9-5 and hit the highway, or airways like Wandering Earl.  Home can be wherever you are.  The longest time for me was 7 months in Mexico although the original plan had been to continue into Central and South America for who knew how long.

Frequent vacation traveler

Many probably fall into this category because we work a 9-5.  Been there and done that.  But I no longer do the typical American work 50 weeks for a 1-2 week paid vacation. Six months as a Park Ranger works for me.

Business traveler

Not everyone travels just for pleasure and may not even want to go.  But seems as though a little fun and maybe some tourist activities could be fit in like the Eclectic Travel Girl.

Paid traveler

Travel writer, photographer, blogger actually being paid to investigate and report back.  I’ve dreamed of this since I was 18 and am still working towards it.

Don’t make me traveler

Some people are perfectly happy at home.  I get itchy feet after a month or so.

Plan or wing it traveler

Some travelers have a tight itinerary with reservations every step of the way while others want no plan so everything is a spontaneous surprise.  I fall in the middle because I love to research my destination and make a way too long list of places to see and things to do.  I like options.  But I do not like to make reservations just in case an unplanned opportunity crosses my path.

Domestic or International traveler

Wherever you live options abound with places to travel whether it’s in your home town, state or country.  I’ve traveled at least through all but three states in the US, Maine, Hawaii and Alaska.  Believe me those are on my list.  But it’s a big world out there.

05 Killarney Hotel theeurope-welcome-4 (1024x576)

Budget or luxury 5 star traveler

Travel can be accomplished on any budget.  I started out living in my Vega camping across America.  And although I still love to camp find a few creature comforts more to my liking now so often stay at inexpensive hotels and guest houses.  Neither my budget or inclinations really allow the luxury of 5 star.  But that could change.

06 hitchhiker_colored_by_ChatDeNoir

Put out your thumb, self drive, take a bus, a train or a cruise.  I’m prone to self drive, whether it’s my own car or RV, or a rental.  Never been much for public transportation but in Mexico it was the way to go.  In the 80s my honeymoon consisted of hitchhiking across country but don’t think I’d go that route any more.  And I’ve never been on a long cruise or train ride but it’s on the list.

Looking up river at Hermit Rapid ~RM95.5 Colorado River Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

Adventure or leisure traveler

Could be all about climbing the highest mountains, diving with sharks, rafting the Colorado River (which by the way is awesome), or hiking the Inca trail.  But maybe just lounging on a tropical beach sipping a fruity libation is your style.  Zip lining in South Africa was my last adventure followed by a relaxing stay at the nearby coast.

Solo or not traveler

I’ve traveled solo most of my life but also with a dog, partner, family and friends.  When alone I seem to interact more with local people which is an important part of travel to me.  I am not afraid, just cautious and paying attention.  Of course I also enjoy sharing the experience with others but I’ve discovered people I can’t travel with.  Haven’t been on any group tours other than short guided walks.

Handicapped traveler

What is easy for some is not for others.  But even a disability doesn’t have to stop travelers as TravelnWrite discovered.  Airline personnel can assist and hotels, transportation, restaurants and other businesses should be accessible. Though I’m sure that’s not always the case asking for help or traveling with someone could make travel a reality.

Work as you go or work to go

Jobs are available all over the world.  They may not be easy to find or ideal.  But if you have marketable skills, or aren’t too picky, you could work as you travel.  Most of us probably work in one place and try to save as much as possible to travel during time off.  If you follow a tight budget it’s surprising how much can be saved.  It’s all about priorities.

No worries about money

Then take me along!

09 Victoria-Falls (1024x768)

I guess there really are as many types of travelers as destinations.  Can you think of any others?

To me it’s all about the journey and learning along the way.  No right or wrong way to travel although respect and courtesy is important everywhere.  Please don’t be an ugly traveler.

Where are you off to on your next travels?  What kind of a traveler are you?

If you really want to travel, get out there and do it.

Thank you to the travelers who shared posts about travel different than my own.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
