Been looking at newer RVs for a couple of years and this fall decided to get serious about it. Tuesday, we drove 2.5 hours to look at a very sweet 5th-wheel.

This place feels posh, but not too much. Although I may have trouble putting the first tack in the wall.

The gypsy life of a seasonal park ranger Winter 2002-2003

At the end of my first summer season at Oregon Caves National Monument I gave away the cheap car to a fellow guide and hit the road to continue on with my gypsy life.

Darl joined me with her own motorhome and we caravanned south to run away from winter and sell at flea markets. The first place we set up was in Yucca Valley, California where we could sell on weekends and stay set up and live on site all week.

Darl decided to go to a conference in Las Vegas, so we picked out some nice jewelry for her to wear. Unfortunately her motorhome blew a rod on the way there; she was towed in, enjoyed the conference, and then was towed back to Yucca Valley by a friend.

I met a local man who sold jewelry at the flea market. We spent some time hiking in the area. One day he brought me flowers, boxes of flowers. He wanted me to remember him as the man who brought me the most flowers. And I do.

After visiting friends selling in Vicksburg, Arizona we decided to join them. Darl sold the dead motorhome and bought a little trailer in Vicksburg. We loaded all her stuff, personal and merchandise, into my motorhome and moved on New Years Eve.

This flea market was open seven days a week, if you wanted, and we lived on site at a crossroads in the middle of nowhere desert, just beyond Hope.

Ah, the winter desert was beautiful to walk through and the sunsets were spectacular. Yet as spring approached I knew it was time to return to work at Oregon Caves.

On the road again: an ongoing saga of the gypsy life Fall/Winter 1999

After almost two years of being in one place at Eagles Cliff, Dale and I had itchy feet and wanted to be back on the road pursuing our gypsy life. So we bought a school bus from a church to turn into a home on wheels.

We painted away the school bus yellow with “oops” paint—that’s whatever the hardware store had mixed wrong for someone—Navajo white and Ever green. Dale started building inside and continued working as we journeyed.

We headed to the coast in September then went south. We got to Yucca Valley, California and set up to sell. We needed to get rid of the bus as we couldn’t get insurance so we traded it for what I called the morphodite.

A closed-in cab-over camper on a trailer with a flat house window over the bed. A little small for two adults and their stuff, Carson, and numerous banana boxes of merchandise. (Flea marketers measure by banana box.)

I knew that camper wouldn’t work in rainy Washington where I planned to return for summer. Plus I really needed my own space so I bought a 27 foot Pace Arrow motorhome. Carson and I moved in to what felt like a palace. And come spring I headed back north.

Selling at flea markets alone proved to be too much work, for very little money, so when I got to Washington I settled my gypsy life for a while and returned to work at Eagles Cliff.
