On the road again

“On the road again.  Just can’t wait to get on the road again.”  I’m humming this in my head because even I don’t like to hear myself sing.  I’m thinking when Willie Nelson wrote this in 1980 as the theme song for the film Honeysuckle Rose I wasn’t the only one who adopted it as my personal mantra.

Joshua Tree National Park CaliforniaRefrigerator replaced and repairs finished, for the time being.  The temperatures have been holding in Yarnell with 70/40s but winter isn’t over yet.  And neither am I done traveling.  Been watching the weather and think Joshua Tree is doable at almost the same temps.  Don’t want to be there when it’s hot anyway.  Been a few years, OK almost 10 years, since I played in Joshua Tree National Park.  And thus the poor quality of these old photos.

Gaelyn Joshua Tree National Park CaliforniaReally looking forward to some boulder climbing and perhaps a Ranger lead tour of the Keys Ranch.  Plus hiking while I explore the geology and plant life in two deserts, the Colorado full of ocotillo and cholla, and the Mojave with extensive stands of the namesake tree.  And of course take a lot of photos.

Used to sell at the nearby Yucca Valley Flea Market, so will have to see if that’s still going on.  Not that I Need anything mind you.  But I do love to look.

Joshua Tree National Park CaliforniaI ordered a new camp chair and sure hope it gets here soon.  Then just need to finish up the laundry, shopping and packing and by early this week I should on the road again.

Back to Yarnell

Weaver Mountains & Yarnell Hill SR89 Congress ArizonaDiagonal slash is the Yarnell Hill Road and I live at the top

I figured being only 2 1/2 hours from home I’d buzz back to Yarnell to pick up some things, be there a few days and return to the desert.  Not to be.

Broken faucet in sinkWelcome home to more repairs.  This time on my 5th-wheel home.  I was dreaming of a hot shower and instead discovered the kitchen faucet broken.  Although I’d drained the water lines, turned off the water to the RV, and put anti-freeze in the drains there must have been just enough water in the line to freeze and blow things apart.

Under the sink in 5th-wheelBecause it was Sunday I had to wait until the next day to buy yet another new faucet and put it in all by myself.  But only because I could see it.  Thank goodness there’s a cupboard door on the backside of the sink.

New kitchen faucet in 5th-wheelI really liked the old faucet better, but what’s a girl to do.

Large puddle outside 5th-wheel door Yarnell ArizonaMoved the groceries out of the camper only to discover the refrigerator/freezer in the 5th-wheel wasn’t cold.  So refrigerated groceries went back to the camper.  It’s like having a big house to walk further for the food which wouldn’t be so bad if it hadn’t been raining for several days.

Old 5th-wheel fridgeAfter talking to several people about the fridge, compressor still running but no cold, and searching online about repairs I decided it was cheaper to replace the unit as the repairs would probably cost the same if not more.  Now you have to remember this is not a RV propane/electric refrigerator, it’s a home model.  Price for the RV unit is about $1600 compared to $430, which is why the previous owners replaced it with a home model as it sat in one place all the time.  The old Magic Chef is 5 1/2 years old and out of warranty.  It’s a very specific, and small opening so the choices for replacement are limited.  Reviews were not great for the Magic Chef, or for Sears who carries Whirlpool and Kenmore.  Home Depot sells a Frigidaire that will fit plus they deliver, install and take the old one away for no extra charge.  But it won’t be here until Friday, Feb 2.  So I wait.

Inside of 5th-wheelIt’s not really terribly cold in Yarnell but has been raining a lot so I’ve only been motivated to go out as far as the camper/refrigerator.  Heck I thought about just staying in the camper in the driveway.  But I do love the space my 5th-wheel offers even though the truck camper proved to be quite comfortable staying in over a month.  That’s good, because after that refrigerator is delivered and known to be working, I’m hitting the road again.

Sunset Yarnell ArizonaIn the meantime, I’ll enjoy the sunsets over the Weaver Mountains through my Imax windows.

Bloggers gathering in the desert

Yellow balloons Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite Arizona

I attended the first ever 2015 Blogger-Fest near Quartzsite Arizona and I’ll bet it won’t be the last of bloggers gathering in the desert.  Turn at the yellow balloons.

Jerri & Sandie & bloggers Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite ArizonaA big thanks to Jerri and Sandie (standing in front of the group) for organizing this gathering attended by at least 50 people, mostly bloggers that full-time in their RV.  And there were mega-loads of RVs parked out on this BLM 14 day camping area off Plomosa Road north of Quartzsite.  Many of the folks attending parked within walking distance, drove a toad/towed/tower over or came from other nearby camp areas.  Started off with introductions then moved on to food and socializing with business cards handed around.

Gayle, Ivan & Judy Blogger-Fest Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite ArizonaFinally met some bloggers I follow, some I’ve heard of, and others I didn’t know until now along with some of their mascot/pets.  I was happy to put faces with Gayle (standing) and Jim (in the hat and black sitting behind her) from Life’s Little Adventures  as their profile photo is an unbelievable hoot.  Ivan from Roadtrip travels with his cat Hailey exploring the southern US and Baja, Mexico during the winter and all over Alberta and Canada during the summer.   I’ve long heard of Judy Bell from Travels with Emma and although she’s a little behind posting I look forward to adding her to my reading list.

Nan, Kevin & Ruth Blogger-Fest Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite ArizonaI met Nan from Trippin With the Talleys while camping at Anza-Borrego and I’ve followed Kevin and Ruth since their travels in Southern Africa last year and more recently returning to the States in their motorhome from Mexico.

Al & Kelly Blogger-Fest Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite ArizonaAl & Kelly came down for the day from Congress, Arizona along with their famous Pheebs from The Bayfield Bunch.  I talked to but didn’t get photos of Jerry and Wanda with their adorable dog Sally from Eggrollings who I missed meeting when they visited the North Rim last fall.  Finally met Diana from Life on the Open Road who I’ve followed forever.  Met a whole lot of new people to add to the blog reader like Retired Rod, John and Sharon from On the Road to Retirement, Marianne of Frugal RV Travel,  and Doug with his dog Yuma from Missadventure Travels.  Plus I know there were more people I didn’t meet and I don’t remember everybody’s name so apologize for leaving some folks out.  In fact I could have spent more time chatting with everyone there and hope I get the chance to do that next year if not before.

Truck camper Plomosa Road BLM Quartzsite ArizonaAfterwards I drove out into the desert and spent a delightfully quiet night with barely another RV in sight.  Then Sunday I drove back to Yarnell to check on things in general and get some forgotten items.  I suspect it will be colder here than I like so I’ll soon be heading back south to warmer desert temperatures.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
