Snowy drive to Kanab for the truck camper

Snow & cloudy morning from RV North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaA two day weekend meant time for a drive to Kanab for the truck camper so I can be ready for some comfortable camping.  Then Saturday morning looked like this.  They told me this was a summer job.

Snow RV & truck North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaI didn’t get an early start Saturday morning, 10:30am which is already 11:30 in Utah.  But I awoke to at least four inches of snow at 26F.  Had to unbury and remove a few things from the back of the truck.  Plus pack a few items to be comfortable over night.  I mean why not stay, it’s warmer in Kanab and no snow.

Snowing SR67 N Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Snow on trees SR67 N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaThe snow got deeper approaching Jacob Lake where it looked like 6-8 inches.  Heavy, wet snow.  And it snowed the entire 45 miles.

Snowplow SR67 N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaBut I didn’t think it warranted a snowplow.

Snow SR67 N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaI got lucky at both locked gates with someone else already stopped and was waved through so I didn’t have to get out of the warm cab into the blowing snow.

Snow & white out SR89A N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaYet I did make a quick cookie stop at Jacob Lake Inn, and lemon zucchini is my new favorite.  I figured the snow would be less as the road slowly drops off the Kaibab Plateau.  Not so.  In fact the clouds got lower to an almost white out for a while.

Snow & low cloud SR89A N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaAnd even within sight of the valley below there was still snow.

Snow patches SR89A N Kaibab National Forest ArizonaIn fact there were patches all the way to the edge of the valley floor.

Camper off truck Kanab UtahWhen I got to Kanab I picked up some silicone to reseal a few edges on the camper.  And wouldn’t you know it I forgot to bring the gun thingy so ended up buying another one.

It was chilly in Kanab but no snow.  Enjoyed an evening with friends and slept in the camper, not on the truck.  Sunday was predicted to be warmer so I put off loading until then.

Thank goodness I had help.  First, because I’m so short it’s difficult to reach the crank to lift and lower the corner jacks on the camper.  Guess I need a stool.  Instead I had a tall helper.  But backing under the camper so it’s perfectly centered is really hard to do alone.  So having two helpers made that a whole lot easier and saved me from jumping in and out of the truck a hundred times.  Still took about two hours.

Then only miles down the road I remembered the license plate hadn’t been taken off the truck and put on the camper so I pulled over to see how difficult that would be now.  As I walked around the back I saw the plate on the camper and realized it had been there all the time and I’d been driving for 1 1/2 months with no plate.  LOL.  Was I lucky.

Clouds over Kaibab Plateau SR89A S ArizonaThe rest of the drive back was gorgeous with temps in the 60s until I began climbing the plateau.  What a difference a day makes.  The clouds put on a grand show all the way home.

Clouds above Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument from LeFevre overlook SR89A Kaibab National Forest ArizonaThe air was so clear I had to stop at Le Fevre overlook to gaze back on the colorful bands of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument with Bryce National Park beyond.  Cloud shadows speckled the landscape.

Horned lizard pinA couple of Navajos had tables covered in jewelry so of course I had to look.  And although it’s not sterling silver, which is my preference, I couldn’t ignore this Horned Lizard pin, the Grandfather who brings good luck.

Through the burn Vermilion Cliffs & Navajo Mt Kaibab National Forest ArizonaOnly patches of snow remained as I continued up the plateau and another far view stop.  The sculptural remains from the 2006 Warm fire opens a distant view of the Vermilion Cliffs to the left, Marble Plateau and canyon to the right then Echo Cliffs rising up to the foot of Navajo Mountain about 60 miles away.

Clouds above green meadows Kaibab National Forest ArizonaGone where the snow white meadows of the day before now turned into a soggy brilliant green.  The drive through Kaibab National Forest to the North Rim changes with every mile, day and season.  A friend aptly calls this his “ribbon highway”.  It’s beauty sure makes driving 45 of 85 or more miles to town more enjoyable.

Truckcamper & 5th-wheel North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaAnd now I’m ready for some comfortable camping weekends.  But not in the snow.

Moving the wheelestate

Well it’s that time of year again for moving the wheelestate from Yarnell back to the North Rim at Grand Canyon for the summer.  As you know, I already dropped the truck camper at a friend’s in Kanab, Utah.  Just can’t tow a 5th-wheel with a camper in the truck but sure am happy to have it for weekend summer play.  I’m a two RV, one person family.

RV through burnt trees from the wash Yarnell ArizonaMy biggest concern when I get ready to pack things up is getting the 5th-wheel hitch back into the truck because it is way too heavy for me, or most of the seniors around here, to lift.  I got lucky this year as a neighbor brought his Kabota over and with a chain easily lifted the hitch into the back of the truck.  Unfortunately I forgot to take photos.

Gaelyn pushing button for slide outs in 5th-wheel Yarnell ArizonaSo now the rest is up to me.  Not too difficult a job to pack away a few chachkies and push a button to pull the slides in.  No problem backing into the hitch as I can see it out the truck window.  In fact, now that the driveway is wider I can even back the big beast out on my own.  Well, I do have a few spotters so I don’t bump anything in the process.

Tuesday I’m heading to Flagstaff, like usual, to stop for a few days and stock up on groceries.  The North Rim is 85 miles away from the nearest shopping in Kanab.  But this year I’ll be staying at a different RV park than my usual Flagstaff KOA.  A friend is parked at the Kit Carson RV Park on the west edge of town so I’m going to give this place a try and will let you know what I think.

I’m excited about returning for my 8th summer season at the Grand Canyon and look forward to sharing many stories and photos of my summer adventures.  Are you coming for a visit?

Quieter in Quartzsite

Jct 95 & Tyson Wells Quartzsite ArizonaI don’t really have much to say, if you can believe it, but the drive into the desert was a delight and it sure is quieter in Quartzsite.  Not empty but a whole lot less vendors.  I was able to buy two more of the LED lights.  I love their bright white light, in some places.

Beer Bellys sign Quartzsite ArizonaHad lunch at Beer Bellys, with no beer for me, which is tucked backed a bit in the Tyson Wells vendor area.  They refer to themselves as the “Adult Day Care Center” and provided some decent cowboy music for entertainment.

Creosote thru crystal ball Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaMade a stop at Desert Gardens specifically to look for a small rock quartz crystal ball.  Before the Yarnell fire I had several of them, but…  I want to experiment with taking photos through it.  This was just the first try.

Truck camper Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaThen drove a few miles west of Quartzsite on I10 and took the Dome Rock exit to a gorgeously desert BLM area which allows 14-day limit free camping.  The gravel roads appear to get rougher the further away from the Interstate and although I can see the highway I barely heard any noise from it.  Found a slight rise to park on for the night with a wonderful view and mostly had internet connection.  Funny how I like to be surrounded by nature but still connected to the web.

Spent the afternoon moving my new chair—very comfortable BTW—from shade to sun while finishing a book started on the last road trip.  Funny how I rarely read books when I’m home.  In fact I’d already read this Nevada Barr mystery Deep South many years ago and guess I’d forgotten the ending because it sure drew me in from start to finish.  Well except for that three week break in Yarnell.  I love how Barr places her mysteries in National Parks.  For me, it’s like Nancy Drew grew up.  Anybody remember those books?

Rocky desert floor Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaOMG, the rocks here are marvelous!  I only wandered within sight of camp and stopped more to pick up one color or another.  Then put them back.  It’s too early in this trip to add the weight of rock.  Well, maybe just one, or two.

Last light on cholla Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaSun set over the mountains left a soft pastel glow as there were no clouds to the west.  Yet those last rays of light sure do make the landscape glow.  Especially those spiny covered cholla.

Crescent moon above mts Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaAnd believe it or not, I was awake before the sun this morning.

Sunrise Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaSeems when camping I go to bed earlier and see more sunrises.

First light on desert Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaYet the best for me is seeing how the light wakes up the the colors.

Early light on desert Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaI could definitely spend more time exploring here.

Early light on desert Dome Rock Quartzsite ArizonaBut the road calls my name, it’s an hour later in California, and today I’m headed to Anza-Borrego in the hopes of seeing different colors on the desert as the wildflowers begin to bloom.  Guess I had more to say than I thought.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
