The long way home road trip

01a Yarnell Hill from Deer Creek Rd AZ (1024x678)

Taking a road trip can occur near to home or far away.  Started out heading down the hill 10 miles for pizza.

02a North to Hillside on Deer Creek Rd AZ (1024x469)

Then drove the back road 60 miles home.

03a Thompson's Double Bar Ranch Deer Creek Rd AZ (1024x583)

Deer Creek Road passes Thompson’s Double Bar Ranch…

04a Cow at Thompson's Double Bar Ranch Deer Creek RD AZ (1024x678)

…where this gal took notice.

05a Piedmont sign by RR tracks Deer Creek Rd AZ (1024x678)

Stopped in Piedmont.  Not a soul in sight.

06a RR tracks along Deer Creek Rd Piedmont AZ (1024x678)

Nothing much there but vast desert landscape.  That’s just fine by me.

07a Orchard along Deer Creek rd AZ (1024x414)

Further along an orchard of some kind.

08a Horses along Deer Creek Rd AZ (1024x480)

But no apples for these beauties.  Can’t imagine what they eat out here.

09a House on a hill above Hillside AZ (1024x511)

This house perches above Hillside.

10a Closed Hillside AZ (1024x653)

Which appears to be closed.

11a Bird in nest on electrical pole Deer Creek AZ (768x1024)

There’s a bird in that nest.  See why I ordered that 18-200mm lens.

12a Jct of Deer Creek Rd & Traveler Way AZ (768x1024)

I enjoyed the wonderfully slow desert drive and will return to explore Traveler Way someday.

Going to the South Rim Grand Canyon

1 Bradshaw Mts from SR89 N Prescott NF AZ (1024x768)
When I’m going to the South Rim of Grand canyon my journey starts off with two routes to Prescott.  The Spar road over the Bradshaw Range offers spectacular deep valley views on one side and steep rocky walls on the other.  Hugging the contour of soft folds at 35mph maximum means a slow ride.
01 Kirkland Bar & Steakhouse Iron Springs Rd S Kirkland AZ pano
Option two, Iron Springs Road crosses an open grazing landscape dotted with scrub and oaks then over gently rolling hills into historic Kirkland.  Don’t blink you’ll miss it.
01a Gas station Skull Valley AZ
Next up a gentle curving grade through piles of rounded granite that level off through more ranch land and into Skull Valley, a quaint little place along a mostly dry wash with some of the biggest most ancient poplars I’ve ever seen.
01b Prescott ahead Iron Springs Rd Prescott AZ (1024x512)
The road flattens out along a wide fingered ridge top before climbing over the foothills on the western edge of the Bradshaw Mountains.
02 Pioneer Parkway E Prescott AZ (1024x275)
And suddenly, there is Prescott below, and Mt Humphreys beyond.  North from Prescott State Route 89 travels like a rippled ribbon through chaparral and juniper/pinyon 50 miles to Interstate 40, then I head east towards Flagstaff.
03 Mts behind Williams AZ from I40 E (1024x436)
In 20 miles the second Williams exit leads to where the train leaves northbound to Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim. Also the exit for State Route 64 which also takes you to the canyon.
04 Mt Humphreys Rt 66 Flagstaff AZ (1024x535)
But I continue on as I have a lunch date with two very dear lady friends in Flagstaff.  (Sorry no photos of them as I Always seem to forget to take photos of people.)
05 Mt Humphreys SR180 AZ (1024x765)
After lunch I continue my journey to the canyon on State Route 180 skirting the southwest side of Mt. Humphreys.
06 Meadows & pines SR180 W AZ (1024x661)
Interspersed patches of open ranch lands amongst the ponderosa pines stretch far ahead.
07 Red Butte from SR64 N AZ (1024x636)
About an hour’s drive to State Route 64 then north past Red Butte towards the canyon.
08 Sunset GRCA SR AZ (1024x768)
Arrived in time to register for the Grand Canyon History Symposium, check into my room and watch this glorious sunset while unloading my truck.

Moving Michael’s trailer to Page, Arizona

01 Hooked up to Mike's trailer Yarnell AZ (1024x768)

Because he drives a jeep we used my truck for moving his trailer to Page.

02 Snow on Mt Humphreys I40 E towards Flagstaff AZ (1024x768)

Snow on Mt Humphreys from I40 E towards Flagstaff, AZ

Michael worked for Forever Resorts the last two summer seasons at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park first in recycling and then as the Environmental Risk Manager.  He had 1 1/2 months off and joined me on the southern Utah truck-fixing vacation the end of October plus enjoyed Thanksgiving with his other four brothers all in town at once.  What a great family.

03 Painted Desert & Echo Cliffs SR89 N AZ (1024x465)

Painted Desert & Echo Cliffs from SR89 N AZ

He was called back to work at Bryce Canyon National Park in the same job starting the end of November.

Snow & Thor's Hammer Bryce Canyon NP UT by Mike

Thor’s Hammer Bryce Canyon NP

He’s living in a dorm because there’s too much snow there to live in a trailer.

04 Echo Cliffs SR89 N towards Page AZ (1024x768)

Echo Cliffs to Page (& bugs on windshield)

When he’s done there in a few months he’ll go to Page, Arizona, where there are corporate offices, until the road to the North Rim is plowed, about mid April.  We stayed overnight in a Page hotel and in the morning said farewells as he headed north and I headed south.

05 Lake Powell & Glen Canyon Dam UT (1024x503)

But first I stopped into the Carl Hayden Visitor Center at Glen Canyon Dam to say hello to a fellow Ranger friend.

06 Page AZ (1024x401)

I had planned to hike out to the Horseshoe Bend overlook but the trail was too crowded with three tour buses of people so I changed my mind part way and instead looked back at Page.

07 Echo Cliffs SR89 S from Page AZ (1024x632)

I love the eroded sandstone formations of Echo Cliffs.

08 Kaibab Plateau, Vermilion Cliffs & Marble Canyon from SR89 overlook AZ pano (1024x160)

There’s a great overlook part way down as you drive across the face of the cliffs where you can see forever.  In the far distance the Kaibab Plateau beckoned me to the North Rim which I knew closed the next day.  All I’d have to do is turn right, instead of left, at the bottom of the cliffs, follow the winding Marble Canyon north crossing the Colorado River on Navajo Bridge and then veer west to parallel the Vermilion Cliffs and climb onto the Kaibab.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
