SWF – A round about way for groceries

01 Sunset at Lake Powell & Navajo Mt UT (1024x768)

On the way to go grocery shopping in Page, Arizona Mike and I hiked the Toadstools trail in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and camped at Lone Rock Beach in Utah.

02 Sunset at Lake Powell & Navajo Mt UT (1024x763)

That’s about 140 miles one way along the northern route.

The 130 mile return home after shopping the next day along the southern route takes us across Navajo Bridge where we saw California Condors.

Buckskin Gulch slot canyon

Sunrise over the Cockscomb House Rock Valley Utah
Thinking to get an early start and beat the heat I left camp along the Southern Cockscombs shortly after sunrise very excited about hiking Buckskin Gulch slot canyon.
SpeedometerAs fast as I could go
The road was terribly rough and rutted.  And my speedometer is 5mph fast.

The four mile drive to Wire Pass trailhead took 30 minutes.

The beginning of the trail looks a lot like the road I just drove, this is a dry wash.

More ancient than time. These soft deposits show how the cross-bedded sandstone is made over millions of years.

I hiked about 5 miles (8.04 km) total in five hours. My usual pace. And I’d love to return to hike more of the 23 possible miles including Paria Canyon. Just not sure I want to drive that road again. Maybe it will be graded. I can hope.

Going Camping

I have the next three days off so I’m going to pick up the slide-in camper in Kanab. That’s Utah. Which is an hour earlier than Arizona. Yes, we’re both Mountain Time, but Arizona doesn’t do daylight savings time. Suppose to be there by 9am their time. Yuk, my day off and I’m still getting up early.

From there I’m going to further explore some of the Grand Staircase Escalante. You may remember I drove through there about a month ago.

A fellow Ranger recommended the Hoodoo Trail.

More good pics when I return.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
