Monstrous Monsoon rains bring flooding to southern Utah

Ground Squirrel at fence Sunrise Point Bryce Canyon National Park UtahOK, enough rain already!  In the last two weeks during monstrous monsoon rains Bryce Canyon received 3 inches.  And Cedar City got two inches in an hour while I shopped there last week.  I love the rain—a special gift in an arid place—and embrace monsoon, but this is ridiculous.  The hard ground—compare to a dried out sponge—takes a while to soak and soften which can cause flash flooding.  But then once saturated can soak no more and causes more flash flooding.

Last week I was praising the healing rain and now I pray for just a little less intensity.  Not like I worry about melting, I have the right gear, but I don’t want to be along the rim when lightning roars.  After Saturday’s 11am Hoodoo geology talk I was eating lunch in my truckcamper with another monstrous monsoon storm brewing and wondering about roving along the rim when a radio call from my boss said lightning was nearby and I was called back to the building.  I get bored real quick in the office, so after cleaning up in the library—my collateral duty as librarian—I went into the visitor center and stood by the topo map answering questions for four hours.

Also heard some stories from visitors hiking in the hoodoos when flash flooding occurred during the monstrous monsoon rains.  Rangers went out to assist people off the trails.  Everyone was fine, though wet and muddy.  Then all trails below the rim were closed.  This kind of flooding is a rather unusual occurrence at Bryce.  My first experience seeing water flow in any dry wash.  But these rains have come hard and fierce.

Late start on Sunday and still struggling to get online after about 9/10am.  Then add a Windows update that changes my settings, again.  Was hoping for an update on trail closures before getting to work at noon.  Instead I find out after a couple hours at the information desk I’ll be roving at the Navajo Loop trailhead to keep people off the closed trail and answer questions.  “When will it open?”  “Don’t know yet, still being assessed for damage and safety.”

hoodoos Sinking Ship valley light Aquarius Plateau clouds Bryce Canyon National Park UtahI found it eerily quiet and was thinking the rim trails and Rainbow Point must be packed.  Left for dinner at 4:30 then back to the desk from 6-8pm and when I returned the Navajo Loop trail had reopened under incomplete repairs.  That didn’t make sense.  With the possibility of more rain, and lightning, I had to make the call by 8:30pm for my 9pm outdoor evening program.  The show went on with a small group including my supervisor for observation because of mid-season evaluation.  No big deal.  And no rain.

thunder clouds Parowan Valley I15 South UtahI traded another Ranger my Wednesday project day for Monday and then took that day off.  Sweet, another nine hours of sick leave used up and only two more work days to the week.  Nice drive on SR20 west under partly cloudy sky up onto a plateau, through meadows, and back down into the valley onto I15 south to Cedar City.

Storm clouds WalMart Cedar City UtahMy plan was park in the outer edges of WalMart for a short walk to lunch at the Asian Bistro, followed by some shopping, and another walk next door to the Dessert Industries Thrift Store.  Then possibly a couple other store stops.

wet legs from wading in flooded parking lot WalMart Cedar City UtahI could hear the rain so hard on the Wally’s roof I thought it might cave in.  There were wet places on the floor and people seemed to be moving slower than usual to put off going outside in the monstrous monsoon downpour, myself included.  Once it stopped raining I checked out and worked through the crowd by the door to get outside.  OMG!  A dip in the drive near the store resembled a ruddy raging river.  The only way to get to my rig was through, so I pushed the cart through almost knee-deep chilly water.  Thank goodness for dry pants and shoes onboard.  After loading groceries, I stayed put in the camper about 1 1/2 hours to wait for the water to subside.  It had pretty much quit raining.  Glad I waited as the debris along the edge of the interstate indicated a lot of water had sheeted across.

Only sprinkled on the way to Panguitch where I stopped for dinner at the Big Fish.  Then barely a sprinkle once home to unpack.  And realize I’d left my credit card at the restaurant.  I have never done that before.

Tuesday morning I returned to work with the first hour at the information desk and discovered the Queen’s Garden trail with loop into Navajo trail was opened after repairs.  Work was still being done on the Peek-a-boo trail.  I figured the trails were either a little muddy if wet or lumpy if dry.  Hiking boots might start as size sevens and return size tens.

hoodoos Bryce Point clouds from rim Bryce Canyon National Park UtahI presented the 11am Hoodoo geology talk, hid in my camper for lunch, and returned to rove several hours near Sunrise Point.  While finishing the day at the information desk I’m told about the updated CDC advisory for mandatory mask wearing in federal buildings beginning the next day that includes all employees and visitors.

So that day, Wednesday on my Friday, starts with opening the visitor center and staffing two hours outside the door to limit entry to 80 visitors and provide masks as needed.  Back to this again.  Garfield county, Utah is seeing increases in COVID with the new Delta strain.

birds on branch Bryce Canyon National Park UtahI am more than happy to drive the 18 miles to the end of the scenic road and spend the afternoon outside at Yovimpa Point.  It was my short day, eight hours instead of nine, made a little shorter by a storm rolling in around 3pm with only sprinkles and no monstrous monsoon rain.

Once home, made a quick clothes change and headed to Panguitch to meet work friends for dinner at the Big Fish and retrieve my credit card.

BTW, if you have a RV you want to sell, now is the time.  Seriously, used RVs are frequently listing for more than you might have paid.  My 25 year-old truckcamper is valued at $2000 more than I paid for it seven years ago.  Mine isn’t for sale.  Don’t expect this to last.  Many of the hordes of new RVers may soon discover it’s not for them.  Just sayin’.

The pain of updating updates

I hope to be done with updating updates of the physical sort now that I’ve replaced my camera, laptop, and cell phone.  Yet I know there will constantly be updates to Windows on the laptop and apps on the phone.

View SE from Yovimpa Pt Bryce Canyon National Park UtahView South from Yovimpa Point

Last week there was a problem leaving a comment on the blog and that was because I hadn’t updated a couple plugins for a while.  Those dang updates get me every time.  But with limited internet signal I can’t do updates every day.

White Cliffs Navajo Mt Rainbow Pt Bryce Canyon National Park UtahUpper Paria Canyon & Navajo Mt 90 miles away from Rainbow Point

After two days off I went back to work Saturday and there were many updates now that CDC says vaccinated people don’t HAVE to wear masks everywhere.  Yet our staff of Rangers still wore masks both inside the office and outside at the information desk.  And I was happily surprised a high percentage of visitors wore masks as well.  Even at the outside hoodoo geology talk 75% of attendees also wore a mask while keeping a respectable distance.  Another park update includes celebrating an abbreviated Astro Fest in mid-June.  No telescopes but extra nights of laser-light constellation tours and other activities.  I’m glad that will fall mostly on my days off.

Live & dead Bristlecone Pines along Bristlecone Loop trail Bryce Canyon National Park UtahIt was my week for hanging out at Rainbow and Yovimpa Points at the end of the scenic road, no complaints there.  One day I went with a new person, Ranger Tif, and the wind darn near blew us off the southern most Yovimpa.  So we walked the one mile Bristlecone Loop trail taking almost two hours answering visitor questions and identifying trees and plants which updates my forest knowledge.  The park’s oldest known Bristlecone, on the right, died at about 1600 years old, they can live to 5000+.

Young Bristlecone Pine along Bristlecone Loop trail Bryce Canyon National Park UtahAdmiring a 20 footer along the trail a visitor guessed it’s age at 50 and I guessed closer to 300.  Can’t know without coring the trunk.  Other mixed conifers seen along the trail include White and Douglas Fir, Limber and Ponderosa Pine, and a couple species of Junipers.  Plus some low growing red-barked Manzanita and some flowering bushes.

Snowberry Clearwing Sphinx moth on pink current flowers Bristlecone Loop Trail Bryce Canyon National Park UtahMost excited to see a Snowberry Clearwing Sphinx Moth pollinating the flowering Current bushes along the trail.  Seems the Snowberry isn’t flowering yet.

Sunday wasn’t a field day and started with project time, then a few hours at the information desk, and finished with a collateral duty taking care of the library.  Easy peasy.  But not so easy was once again fighting with “Network busy on Windows” error when I did the usual routine of tethering the phone to the laptop to get online if there’s a signal.  I tried the tech support I paid extra for but the difficult to understand voice couldn’t understand my situation—remote with no WIFI—and told me “it’s a Microsoft problem.”  Then she provided a phone number that gave a recording saying the only support is now online.  Of course that’s where I am not.  It’s now like I have to travel with my computer everywhere so I can get online where possible, but not at home.  Oh, and the phone has a mind of it’s own too constantly turning off the volume and on an alarm.  More updates on this further down.

hoodoos Pink Cliffs valley snowy mts storm clouds Rainbow Pt Bryce Canyon National Park UtahThe next day I took the laptop to work again so after I was off at 5pm I can download Windows updates and maybe solve the current problem.  Took about 30 minutes to update my laptop and then it would tether to the phone.  This has gotten very old and extremely frequent. Microsoft has us by the balls, so to speak.  That night I stayed online for hours, because I could.

hoodoos valley Pink Cliffs Aquarius Plateau storm clouds Rainbow Pt Bryce Canyon National Park UtahThe work day started early with opening the visitor center by 8am with Ranger C.  Later, we’d been scheduled for Rainbow Point.  However, new rules with updates to the schedule meant two people couldn’t ride in the same vehicle, even masked, for the 30 minute drive.  Ranger C. covered a desk information shift and I returned to Rainbow and Yovimpa Points for the afternoon.  But I didn’t stay long because of a lightning and thunder snowstorm.  Took a few photos and headed back with a quick stop at Ponderosa Point and then Natural Bridge overlook before returning to the office.  Visitors were shocked and mostly ill prepared for the cold, wet and windy weather.  Saw one pronghorn in a meadow on the return my first this year seen in the park.

Ponderosa hoodoos valley Aquarius Plateau clouds Bryce Canyon National Park UtahTuesday several Rangers where sick from the second Moderna shot so there were updates to the schedule.  Still worked 12:15-1:15 at the desk.  Then added the 2pm hoodoo geology talk with roving along the rim and decided to have the Portabella sandwich for lunch at the Lodge.  Then more roving and back to the information desk from 6-8 to close.

Pink Cliffs valley trees Yovimpa Pt Bryce Canyon National Park UtahOpened the visitor center the next day, my Friday on Wednesday, then returned to Rainbow/Yovimpa Points to rove.  Left the phone home as it doesn’t really work out there anyway.  But the damn thing has a mind of it’s own and in my back pocket seems my butt can turn things on I can’t even find.  WTF?  Probably needs updating.

Karen & Gaelyn Bryce Canyon National Park UtahSpent the next day doing laundry and cleaning house for my guest’s arrival in the afternoon.  Met Karen and Jim at the North Rim Grand Canyon in 2008, and she started me on the road to blogging.  Sadly, she lost her husband but is keeping up a good attitude living in Denver and just bought a three-wheel bike.  It had been nine years since we’d seen each other.  She flew in to Vegas Wednesday and visited with another friend then drove to Bryce the next day and of course we were up pretty late.

I had an eye doctor appointment for Friday in Cedar City, 1 1/2 hours away, so we got an early start and had time for breakfast out before arriving minutes late.  But I had to wait for over 30 minutes anyway.  Medicare completely covered the eye exam and the doctor said my eyes were healthy and not yet in need of cataract surgery. Then I picked out a pair of lavender kids frames and the glasses should be ready in 7-10 days.  After grocery shopping we went to the pet store for cat food and in the same strip mall Verizon. The battery was starting to bulge on the phone thus causing all kinds of problems so I decided to replace it. What a hassle to wade through the paperwork, then leave both phones for 30 minutes to transfer stuff to the new phone, also a Motorola Droid.  I decided to leave the old phone for them to recycle but didn’t discover until I got home they hadn’t moved all my photos.  They were closed by then.  Of course the new phone is a new learning curve. Just a little smaller screen but comes with a stylus.

I called the store first thing in the morning and got transferred to a call center. I wanted to stop them from recycling/throwing away my old phone. A message went to the sales person. Then we went to breakfast at the Lodge and I got a call from the store manager but the signal wasn’t great so he was suppose to call me back. Didn’t happened.

Karen & Gaelyn Bryce Canyon National Park UtahAfterwards we walked to the rim briefly in a cold wind, got in some selfies and a lady took pics of us and the canyon.  Karen left just after noon and it was hard to say goodbye.  A two day visit was too few.  But we’re already talking about a winter gathering somewhere.

Later I tried to connect phone and puter via USB and not sure if it’s the daily lousy connection or I’m doing something else wrong as I don’t seem to have a signal. Seems it’s time for updating Windows again and can’t because I’m not online and I can’t get online until I update Windows. This is getting very old.  Time to take the new laptop to work again.  Sigh…  Funny thing the old laptop will connect if there’s a signal and that’s how this post is going out.  But what a pain to have to save from the new laptop to a flash-drive then load onto the old laptop and hope for the best.

PT in Cedar City Utah

Sierra cat wants water Cedar City UtahOM, I’ve been going to PT in Cedar City Utah three weeks.  Sadly, I am nowhere near 100% fixed.

Sierra cat wants water Cedar City UtahShe likes fresh water from my glass

My life is typically planned for in six month increments, though the last two years messed up that balance of work and play, first loosing my best friend then my job.  Breaking both wrists mid-August put a snag in my life.  I should be on the road and gone somewhere instead of sitting in the Cedar City Utah KOA watching the leaves drop in a chilly north wind.  (Sorry I couldn’t share the phone video of the leaves being blown about.)

Sierra cat open camper door KOA Cedar City UtahThank goodness for electricity providing heat, whatever it’s costing. Some afternoons are sun warmed enough to have windows and the door open.  But nights have been cold.

fall leaves Cedar City UtahI’m walking my two blocks to PT three times a week.  Movement and stretching increase in tiny amounts.  I mostly ache all the time from 1-3 on the pain scale.  I’m up to lifting about 3/4 of a gallon, six pounds, using a handle and with both hands.  Living alone kind of means everything I do is PT.  Just give a thought to using your hands and wrists all day long.  I’m getting better every day.  Yet still not much motion backwards or side to side.  Am I expecting too much?  Look forward to a re-evaluation.

Besides some necessary grocery shopping, PT is about all I do here.  I haven’t moved the truck in a month, but have started it’.

Parowan Gap UtahI did visit a local novelty which I will try to post about soon.

unusual 5th-wheel KOA Cadar City UtahPulled into KOA for a couple nights

Daytime temperatures in the mid 60° is nice.  A few nights below freezing prompted me to buy a second room heater.  Now that nights are in the high 30s it feels like a heatwave.  Did I really just write that, the person who HATES being cold?

Sierra cat fur on table Cedar City UtahGetting cold is unhealthy for me with my poor circulation.  It’s stressful, which is never healthy.  Even poor Sierra went through stress the two weeks I spent in the hospital.  Her normally beautiful long fluffy fur became matted.  Thank goodness Jen is a cat whisperer with the right tools.  I am amazed at how cooperative Sierra was when Jen basically shaved part of her back.  She doesn’t want her photo taken now from the back.

After three weeks doing PT in Cedar City and only 30% improvement in motion there is concern that I need more aggressive (not torturous) PT.  My Dr. says I’m behind schedule on mobility.  Also tells me I can’t rely on only continuing on my own.  It’s not easy to stretch one bum hand with another bum hand.  So, I’m adding another week to Cedar City before I head further south to I’m not really sure where.

calendars in envelopes Cedar City UtahUpdate on the calendars:  Just like last year, the first shipment had a printer glitch on 1-2 photos, every calendar.  So Shutterfly sent a second shipment that included quality control.  I have most of your calendars in addressed envelopes.  Now I need to get to the post office and that might be a week or two away.  Thanks for your patience.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
