1972 Downers Grove South Reunion

01 Class of 1972 at 40th reunion Bolingbrook Country Club

Forty years after graduating from high school many gathered for multiple activities.  Although I didn’t remember a lot of them I now have new old friends.

02 Sandee's house Channon IL (1024x768)

After very little sleep on a red-eye special from Las Vegas to Chicago and a drive through memory lane I arrived at my hostess/fellow student/friend’s house in the far western suburbs (which was out in the rural sticks in 1972).  I honestly don’t remember Sandee  from high school yet have gotten to know her on, yes, FaceBook over the last year and love her.  She has a zest for life that just can’t be beat, summer kayaking and bike riding with her grandchildren.  We chatted away like long lost friends, sharing our herstories, memories of school days, marriage(s), children, laughs and tears.

Girls Night Out

03 Girls night out at Emmett's Downers Grove IL (1024x768)

Soon it was time for our first reunion activity.  At least 20 gals mingled around a large table at Emmett’s Brewing Company in downtown Downers Grove.  I really didn’t remember anybody.  And although we stayed for several hours I was rather flagged out from pulling an all-nighter, which I hadn’t done since high school.

No bowling at the alley

04 Tivoli theater & bowling alley Downers Grove IL (1024x617)

Friday night we gathered at the Tivoli Bowling Alley.  Nobody bowled.  I’d never been there before but had been to the movie theater next door many times.  One person put together a music CD of favorites from the 70s and a few folks shook their booties.  I finally saw some people I knew, plus a whole bunch I didn’t.  Seems the people I remember best where ones I went to grade school and junior high school with before moving on to high school which was a class of 688 students at graduation.  Was fun to catch up and reminisce.  Plus I walked around looking at name tags and just introducing myself to those I didn’t remember.  I met a whole lot of really nice people that way.

The Big Hurrah

05 Bolingbrook Country Club (1024x759)

Finally Saturday night, the big bash and semi-formal gathering at Bolingbrook Country Club with 116 students in attendance plus many spouses.  I recognized a few more names.  In fact we all squealed like little girls when two ladies whose Moms were my Girl Scout leaders saw each other.  Those were some fun times going camping and learning about the great outdoors.  I was amazed by three couples who were high school sweethearts and still married after all these years.  The organizers did a fabulous job.

Actually created by our class cut-up

The big take away for me was how totally happy everyone seems to be with their lives.  So glad we have a class FaceBook page to keep up with everyone.  And I don’t think we’ll be waiting another ten years to meet again.  In fact so many classmates now live in Arizona we want to have a gathering here.

After 40 years people really hadn’t changed that much physically, well at least in our faces. And I’m sticking with that.

Searching for memories

Where did all these new toll roads come from?  While driving west out of the Chicago O’Hare airport I missed an exit and got turned around into rush hour traffic so got off at the first opportunity.

01 Patti Loomis house on Wiola LaGrange IL (1024x763)

Found a familiar main road, not expressway, and soon a cross street name caught my attention.  My Aunt Patti lived on this street in LaGrange, and still does.  I totally surprised her.  It had been about 35 years since we’d seen each other.

02 Ruth's old house where Jimmy now lives on Wiola LaGrange IL (1024x678)

As a child, my family stayed here while waiting to move into a new house.  In fact, Mom actually tied me to a cherry tree that’s no longer there at this neighboring house where another relative lived and now my cousin lives there.  Mom got pissed at all my wandering off.

03 1020 62nd Pl DG IL (1024x768)

I lived in Downers Grove during most of my school years.  I so remember crawling out the bedroom window (behind the tree), across the shaky just-for-looks balcony and over the garage roof to shimmy down a drain pipe.  Trees given to Mom for holidays as saplings now tower over the roof.  The neighborhood looks lush and settled instead of the sparse one tiny tree in front of every house.

04 DGHS South DG IL (1024x768)

Downers Grove South High School really grew, I suppose to match the expanded neighborhood.  Turned down the street we used to drag race on and now too many stop signs.  Plus the Ford Fiesta rental couldn’t beat a snail.

About the only things I recognized were street names as I continued traveling west to the home of my hostess who I thought lived way out in the sticks.  But turns out rural is even further west, which I explored the following day.

40 years in 4 days

Trying to cram a 40 year reunion into four days of visiting may have aged me.

01 (1024x768)

Left the fall beauty of the North Rim Wednesday before noon.

02 (1024x389)

Then drove to Las Vegas to catch a flight to Chicago.

03 (1024x768)

After landing at 6am, I picked up the rental car and headed to the suburbs.  Of course I drove by the old homestead.

04 (1024x678)

Felt a little lost most of the time as old landmarks had disappeared. Most of the street names seemed familiar.  It was more like visiting a new place than going home.  Yet my schoolmate and hostess Sandee made me feel right at home in her beautiful house where I had my own room with a most comfortable bed.

05 (1024x768)

Before going to the first reunion function Thursday night I filled a food craving at Portillo’s, Italian Beef.  Only authentic in Chicago.

There’s so much more to tell.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
