Yarnell Hill Fire takes lives of 19 firefighers

We all grieve over the loss of 19 young firefighters who died trying to protect our little town from the Yarnell Hill Fire.

Everyone I know there seems to be safe as the evacuation came in time.  My dearest friend was given 5 minutes to clear out of her home.  She loaded her car with some valuables and her cat.

At least half the town’s homes and businesses are destroyed by this erratic and devastating over 8000 acre fire still at 0% containment.

People and animals have been offered sanctuary in both Prescott and Wickenburg.

I am safe at the North Rim but in a daze.

I can’t stop thinking of the loss of life and devastation of our sweet little town.  My prayers go out to all the families involved.

Please pray for rain and no wind to help the remaining firefighters put this out.

Fall walk in the Weaver Mountains

01 86 Two-track trail Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x678)

I really need to clear my head and rejuvenate my spirit.  Ideas of where to travel this winter spin in my head, Central America or Africa.  So why not a walk in my own backyard in the Weaver Mountains to think.

02 Dried plants & critters Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x576)

It’s looking a little dry with most of the bushes and grasses browned out where a few critters try to hide.  Actually, these grasshoppers jump all over the place yet prove very difficult to photograph.  The dying plants look as beautiful to me as when green and would make a marvelous center piece, yet I’d rather enjoy them here than inside my RV.

03 121 Poplar Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x507)

The big poplar still carries leaves of green with a touch of gold.

04 102 Boulders Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x678)

The shape of the the granite boulders fill my imagination.

05 Birds Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x372)

Look closely for the birds

I attempt to bird a bit but they are so flighty, and usually too far away otherwise.

06 122 View W Harcuvar Mts & valley from Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ pano (1024x259)

After a little over a mile I crest the ridge which reveals the valley and peaks to the south and west.  Congress, where the Bayfield Bunch live this winter, lies below.  Wickenburg beyond and the Harcuvar Mountains in the distance.

07 125 Boulders Weaver Mts Yarnell AZ (1024x557)

I sit and think on these boulders while absorbing the view.  Ideas run through my head of far off places I have yet to see.

Yet the only decision I come to is a walk back down off the mountain.

So I meander through a wash admiring the world around me.

Where do you wander when you need to think?

Yarnell – Where the desert breeze meets the mountain air

01 Weaver Mts & Yarnell Hill Rd from SR89 Congress AZ (1024x764) (1024x764)

While Mike has been visiting the last month we drove up and down the Yarnell Hill a lot, or so it seems.

03 Weaver MtsYarnell Hill & overlook SR89 AZ (1024x768) (1024x768)

It’s a great drive 2500 feet up a very curvy road. But please use caution, this road sees a lot of accidents.

02 View NW from Yarnell Hill SR89 AZ (1024x618) (1024x618)

Within four miles the environment changes from Sonoran desert to oak woodland.

Just over the western edge of the Weaver Mountains grows saguaro and ocotillo.

From bottom to top the temperature changes at least 10 degrees.

Which keeps me living in the mountain air.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
