Back to Yarnell

A decision has finally been made and I’m going back to Yarnell for the winter.  But first I have to remove the camper from the truck so I can tow the 5th-wheel.  So, I’m driving back to Yarnell today to drop the camper and back to the North Rim Wednesday.  Then I have about two weeks left of my summer season at the North Rim before hauling the big house to I know not where.  Have locals looking for options.

This trip includes no lollygaging along the way.  It’s a seven hour drive from the North Rim to Yarnell.  Way more than I usually like to drive in a day.  I’ll be able to take my time on the next trip down with the 5er.

Why Yarnell?  I have lived there 10 winters and made friends in this lovely small community.  My BFF is having a knee operated on this winter and I’ll be there to help her through recovery.

Will I travel this winter?  I have at least two trips planned.  The Grand Canyon Historic Symposium on the South Rim November 4-6.  And a January trip to Quartzsite, Arizona for a couple of gatherings.  Sure hope there’s more in store.

Sometimes I have a difficult time making a decision.  Maybe too many options bogs me down.  Then there’s the ideas that just cost too much money.  I’d really like to return to South Africa but it doesn’t seem to be in the budget this year.  I’ll keep dreaming.

I applied for two winter seasonal positions, Big Bend and Death Valley.  And although I was referred to both never got a call, interview, or offer.  Being a Park Ranger is really competitive work and winter season offers less choices.

So I’m headed back to Yarnell.

Yarnell Car Show brings back memories

Yarnell Car Show posterWith over 250 entries the first Yarnell Car Show had almost more cars than town.  The population of Yarnell at last census was about 800, after the 2013 fire destroyed over 100 homes the population is less.  Downtown can’t be more than a couple miles long.

Scottsdale resident and firefighter Lance Parker loves Yarnell and classic cars so put the two together to raise funds for the Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial Park.

Yarnell Car Show ArizonaI have never seen so many people in town.  I walked for about 3 hours, down one side of the main street and back up the other.

My Dad liked cars and worked his way from mechanic to Service Manager at a Cadillac dealership in the Chicago suburbs.  He taught me quite a bit about repairs, when you could still fix cars yourself.  A friend drove an El Camino and I remember that the doors weighed a ton.  The owner of this one told me the door hinges had to be replaced often.

Hood ornament Yarnell Car Show ArizonaI just love hood ornaments.  Now that I drive a Dodge guess it’s time to put a Ram on the hood, plus I’m an Aries.

I may not know the exact years or models but I do know these cars have personality and style.  Today’s cars all look alike to me.  But then I’m more into trucks.

Seems like the Yarnell Car Show was a huge success so hope it happens again next year.

Water in the wash

Water in the wash Yarnell ArizonaIt’s rare for me to see water in the wash I live next to in Yarnell, Arizona.  I’m not here during summer monsoons.  And try not to be here when snow may be melting.

Rain & low clouds thru RV window Yarnell ArizonaBut after a couple days of pretty steady rain the sun poked through for just a bit and I saw sparkle on the water.

Water in wash Yarnell ArizonaJust couldn’t resist taking photos.

Water drops on grass Yarnell ArizonaIn Arizona water is so precious and as long as it doesn’t fall too hard too fast too long and gets a chance to soak into the ground, it is a special gift.

Water in wash upstream & down Yarnell ArizonaI’d be one to complain with too many days of excessive rain, like when living in the Pacific Northwest.  But after living in the arid Southwest for a while I’ve learned to like it, no love it, and especially relish monsoons.  Sure beats snow.

Low clouds over Weaver Mts Yarnell ArizonaHey, where are those Weaver Mountains?

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
