Honoring the Sonoran Desert light, shadows, and wind

late light camper shadow desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZBack to my happy place where clouds dancing over the Sonoran Desert make for amazing light and shadow play on the Kofa Mountains and even with wind provide a playground for birds, and me.

RV blocking me in VFW-BLM Yuma AZOnce the a-hole RVer left me free to move, stress level dropped, and I made a plan to return to the Sonoran Desert.  I spent a couple more days at the noisy VFW-BLM camp as I really don’t like to go anywhere on weekends.

$5 box Girl Scout cookiesWho can resist?  I sold these almost 60 years ago for .50/box and now they’re $5

However, Sunday mornings are a good time to shop.  So I left camp about 10am and went into Yuma to run the usual errands, fill water, propane, and diesel, plus stock up on groceries that will hopefully get me through the rest of the month.

Saguaro desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM AZIt’s only about an hour drive to the King Road which accesses Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent BLM (Bureau of Land Management) boondocking sites.  Sigh, by 1:30pm, back to the Sonoran Desert.  I found a nice large space with few RVs in sight and easily leveled with Saguaro and Kofa Mountain views.

Saguaro desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM AZWasn’t long before I was out for a walk into my new yard with camera in hand.  Clouds to the west changed the afternoon light to the east almost quicker than I could shoot.  The layers of formations in the Kofa Mountains are not always obvious under a cloudless mid-day sun.

After a deep sleep surrounded by dark and quiet, I woke to the delightful song of a Cactus Wren.  (link to song) I am excited to have birds around and wonder about putting out the trail-cam somewhere.  That will take at least another walkabout and time to observe wildlife patterns.

I had an incredibly good signal—saw the towers on the Chocolate Mountains—that would service the border patrol stop which isn’t always open.

Saguaro desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZAfter lunch, the 75° day called me outside under a cloud patterned sky that once again played light and shadow games across the Sonoran Desert and mountain landscape.

Saguaro desert Kofa Mts reverse sunset clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZI made and posted a short video while embracing the apricity found in the Sonoran Desert.

Saguaro desert Kofa Mts reverse sunset clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZThroughout the afternoon a few new neighbors moved in, not too close thank goodness.

Doug & GaelynThe next day wind blew strong from the southwest and right on my door.  I was afraid to try and open the door that it might be ripped out of my hands or slammed in my face.  House was rocking.  Fellow blogger Doug came by and held the door for me to get out.  Then we managed to sit outside visiting for a little while on the almost none windy side of the camper.  But as that became shaded it cooled off enough to call it a day.  Doug held the door for me to get back inside and that’s where I stayed.

chocolate chip cookiesThe wind blew all night at a steady rocking 25mph with occasional gusts up to 60mph.  Same thing all day long.  With the high only 61° I warmed the house by baking chocolate cookies.  And I put up another short video about the Wicked Wind in the Sonoran Desert.

first light desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZThe next morning was calm and chill at 39° and although it cleared briefly rain was predicted.

But not before some birds came out to play.

desert Kofa Mts rainbow King Rd BLM Kofa AZThe wind returned but I did manage to push outside several times in the afternoon between gusts and rain drops to photograph rainbows.  Wasn’t enough rain to wet the ground or plump the cactus in this dry Sonoran Desert.

desert Kofa Mts clouds King Rd BLM Kofa AZIt wasn’t terribly cold outside when the sun was shining but that wind is so annoying.  Yet I took advantage of the wind by taking a time-lapse through the window of the clouds scooting along.

With a little less wind the next day, I bundled up and walked a short ways from camp in the afternoon.

I never get very far even when I’m out for an hour or two.  So many distractions.

That pretty much wraps up my first week back in the Sonoran Desert.  My current plan—and they sometimes change—is to hang here for the next full moon rise in early March.

Camping near Kofa Mountains south of Quartzsite Arizona

desert mts sunset clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZI love those Kofa Mountains so much I’ve been, stayed, left, and returned all with ten days.  Cold nights and not so cold refrigerator had me on the move to town and different camps.  Does it seem that cold came early or is it my aging memory and low tolerance for below 60-70°F.

ant hole & yellow flowers BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZAfter leaving the cold of camp Congress and buying yet another battery, this time for the camper, I stayed at Shady Lane RV Park in Quartzsite and took care of chores.  That last camper battery only lasted a year and is needed to make the solar system work.  Early November is pretty quiet in Quartzsite so quick service at Solar Bill and no crowds shopping.  Bought a new peace flag as the old one was raggedly wind blown.

last light desert Kofa Mts BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZThen I headed south for the Kofa Mountains in the Sonoran desert, and camped where I was last year almost on the same tire print.

truckcamper desert BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZAh, felt good to be home.

Last light Kofa Mts BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZWaking to 45° instead of 34° with a view of the Kofa Mountains made me happy, though it was a little windy.  Even with clouds the solar panels were charging.  Back to having power, I was able to download photos and work on the computer.

Saguaro desert BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZ

Mesquite tree frame Kofa Mts BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZHigh 60s during the day, out of the wind, felt delightful.  Went for a walk looking for potential places to set the trail-cam.  Couldn’t find any obvious animal trails, tracks or scat and only small burrow holes so I didn’t bother.  I could put a container with water out to attract birds.  But being I haven’t brought my filled water bottles up to count I am being stingy with water.

haze desert Kofa Mts BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZWind picked up the next day and the fridge wouldn’t stay on.  It’s always something.  I need a RV fixit person for all the little shit that’s broken.  After banging on the backside of the fridge it finally started working again.  Sometimes, it just takes a bigger hammer or the movement of old and oxidized wires.  Wind increased throughout the day until I could barely see the Kofa Mountains.  So I stayed inside working on a blog post and video.  Sadly the signal is not great, in fact I believe worse than last year, so I struggled to do anything online.  I am an internet junkie.

desert Kofa Mts clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZOnly mid-November with nights dropping into the mid 30s and wind making the 60° days feel chilly makes me want to be someplace warmer.  Yet making heat with the oven and power under the sun keeps me home, inside, labeling photos from October 2021, and working on videos.

desert Kofa Mts sunrise rays BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZEarly rise Wednesday morning and I took off for two towns.   Starting with Quartzsite where I couldn’t get some parts, filled a propane tank, and took a luxurious 20-minute $10 shower at the laundromat.  Then I drove the 40 minutes north to Parker for some groceries.  Quartzsite doesn’t offer options for big box stores and I don’t typically buy groceries at Dollar-type stores.  The two tiny grocery stores have limited selection for high prices.  Other shopping choices are 20 minutes west to Blythe, California or a little over an hour south to Yuma.

truckcamper Plomosa Rd Quartzsite AZAfter what felt like hours shopping, I drove back south and stopped north of Quartzsite off Plomosa Road on 14-day BLM land.  I didn’t go far enough off the road so did hear a little traffic noise and had more neighbors than I’m used to.  Yes, I’m spoiled by quiet and dark.  But I could move later.

Only that didn’t happen the next day because I had a blazing fast signal and loaded a video about the breakdown in Congress.

The next morning at 36° I was freezing, and so was my entire refrigerator.  First it won’t stay lit then obviously not turn off. That seems to mean the thermostat is bad, and that’s not too hard to change, if I can get the right one.  Which means another trip to Quartzsite.  I went straight to the RV Lifestyles store and a serviceman said I should move the retainer probe to different fins inside the fridge. I didn’t know about this.

Saguaro desert mts sunset clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZThings started to thaw but then it went into the won’t stay lit mode again so I moved the probe back to where it started.  Of course the later didn’t happen until after I’d returned to my camp with the lovely view of the Kofa Mountains.

desert Kofa Mts last light sunset clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd AZOnly takes a little cloud to make for beautiful sunsets.

Fridge finally lit and stayed on overnight.  Intermittent problems are the worse!  Another problem, my Nikon Coolpix camera died.  I mostly use it while driving (I know and don’t want to hear about it).  Obviously, the big Nikon D5600 with 18-300mm lens is too big for that.  Guess I’ll be using my phone camera more.  Now I’m thinking of what camera could replace the Coolpix (which honestly I never really liked) and the D5600 to reduce weight.  Mirrorless is the now the way to go, but still WAY out of budget.

Another 36° morning and I felt cold!  It’s warmer further south, so I’ve moved again because I can.  I will miss those Kofa Mountains, but I’ll be back.  If you follow me on YouTube I’ve been posting short videos of my camps in real time.  If you’re not subscribed, please do.  The channel actually broke 200 subscribers this month.  Would be great to break 300 in December.  Help a gal out please.

Headed northward from Yuma Arizona to boondock

01 DSL_1056lewfbr moon clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2I happily headed northward from Yuma returning to a favorite landscape to shoot April’s full moon over Easter weekend and the clouds beckoned me to stay just a little longer.

I’ll be honest, I won’t miss the noisy camp near Yuma, but I will miss Gayle.  She’s slowly recovering from her dental work in Mexico but staying nearby for a while longer.

03 DSL_0906lewfbr Palo Verde tree sunset BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2Palo Verde sunset

After shopping in Yuma I headed northward and less than an hour away to my next camp (where I took a 360° video), a favorite place, the BLM adjacent to Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.  Not many people out there so really lots of peace and quiet guaranteed.

04 DSL_0896lecwfbr desert Kofa Mts moon BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ azb g-2I sat outside in the welcomed afternoon shade of the truckcamper.  Set the camera on tripod and the moon snuck up on me faintly and not yet full.

Still struggling with autofocus on the Nikon so after some googling I took the polarizing filter off, not an easy task.  That filter also reduces light so now I have to think differently when shooting in Manual.  Bumping up the shutter speed is a bonus for hand-held shooting as I’m not very steady and usually too lazy to use the tripod.

Time for a different moon rise view.  Then I speculated on where the moon would actually rise almost 30 minutes after sunset.

11b DSL_1210lecwfbr Kofa Mts full moon rise BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2It would be very dark and that’s when I struggle the most shooting the moon, even using the tripod.  That night was no different.

12b IMG_20220417_190526009lewfbr Ocotillo Chocolate Mts sunset BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-3Easter Sunday, very quiet and found no eggs.  However, I did wear a summer dress to nature’s cathedral.  That could have had something to do with the 91° day.

13 DSL_1243lewfbr desert Kofa Mts clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2The next day reached 96° yet the cloudy skies begged me to stay.

14b DSL_1249lewfbr desert Kofa Mts clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2One minute later, changing light

I just can’t resist the light and shadow play across the landscape.  I told myself to get to work on the next blog post, but instead spent a good part of the day outside just taking in the views.

15c DSL_1256lewfbr desert Kofa Mts clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2Five minutes later

Amazing what just a few moments in time will do to change the scene entirely.  Though I took lots of photos, I also wanted to imprint this image on my brain knowing I’d not be back to the Sonoran Desert again until winter or at least fall.

16 DSL_1263lecwfbr desert Kofa Mts reverse sunset anticrepuscular rays BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ g-2As much as I prefer warm to cold I honestly can’t envision living with daily highs consistently over 100° all summer long.  A true bonus of wheelestate.  Don’t like the weather then move.

I spent the evening watching way too many RV-people videos.  So many just record themselves talking and even while driving. Is that interesting? I could talk forever doing that.

18a DSL_1272lewfbr Ocotillo desert Chocolate Mts Palm Canyon Rd BLM Kofa NWR AZ-Enhanced yt g-2

18b DSL_1273lewfbr desert Kofa Mts clouds BLM Palm Canyon Rd Kofa NWR AZ gHonestly, after the previous day I was ready for cooler weather. Only supposed to be high 80s in Congress about two hours northward.  So even though the clouds invited me to stay, I hit the road and took video along the way.  Driving this route over 20 years I’ve become familiar with the small towns along the way, so I chatted about that.  The loud Mexican music drew me into Agila’s Tuesday market especially for produce and I found a little treasure.  Also grocery shopped in Wickenburg and had lunch at my favorite fast-food joint before headed northward to camp Congress.

19 DSL_1278lewfbr desert Date Crk Mts sunset clouds Cemetery Rd BLM Congress AZ g-2I planned to spend only a few days before continuing northward again and return to my Skull Valley home.  But the overnight lows still hovered just over freezing further north so I didn’t rush off.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
