Saddle Mountain trailhead

My drive into the forest to seek fall colors took me to the end of Forest Road 610 in the Kaibab National Forest and the Saddle Mountain trailhead.

02 SE view of LCR on Navajo land from Saddle Mt trailhead Kaibab NF AZ (1024x543)

Such a Grand view.  To the southeast across the canyon the Little Colorado River cuts through Navajo land.

03 NE view of Colorado R & Vermilion Cliffs from Saddle Mt trailhead Kaibab NF AZ (1024x516)

To the northeast the Colorado River cuts through the Marble Plateau with the Vermilion Cliffs barely visible in the distance.

A few penstemon still linger near the warm rim.

The trail called my name, but shadows grew long.

I paused a moment to see who’d been carving on the trees.

Then hit the road home through the colorful fall aspen.

Fall on the North Kaibab National Forest

Fall Kaibab NF AZ

I went seeking fall on the North Kaibab National Forest.  And Forest Road 610 east led me into a colorful wonderland.

Fall aspen along Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Welcome to the official September equinox when the sun will rise due east and set due west all over the world.

Fall aspen leaves Kaibab National Forest Arizona

As the nights get longer in the Northern Hemisphere the autumn pallet appears.

The aspen glow like neon signs along the Las Vegas strip all vying for my attention.

Fall colors reflect in road puddle Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Monsoon rains leave puddles that reflect the changing season.

Rounding a corner into brilliant light makes me sing with joy.  Be thankful you can’t hear me singing.

I stop to lie down on the leaf littered forest floor.

And look up through the magnificent aspen into a brilliant blue sky.

Fall aspen Kaibab National Forest Arizona

Shadowy light beacons me into the glowing forest to dance with the aspen.

Yet the shadows draw long.

As the waning day calls me home filled with aspen energy.

What colors your world this day?

Crazy Jug Point North Rim Grand Canyon

01 The Good Luck Duck Kaibab NF AZ (1024x768)

Those crazy gals from The Good Luck Duck are boondocking out on the Kaibab National Forest not far from Grand Canyon.

Of course with a Great Big Duck and a itty bitty car they can’t really get too far off the beaten path.

So on one of my days off last week we all loaded into my Big truck and went for a ride through the forest to the canyon’s rim at Crazy Jug Point.  We rode about 35 miles on good gravel road doable by most vehicles unless there’s been a lot of rain, plus be prepared to either move down trees across the road, or turn around.  I brought rope along this time but didn’t need it.

There was not another soul anywhere around, except for us three.

The silence upon our arrival was palpable.

A monsoon storm hung over the plateau to the southwest but we never felt a drop.

Thanks for an awesome day and a special treat for me when Annie drove us back.  She likes Big trucks.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
