Walking to the rim of Grand Canyon for sunset on the second night of camping at Toroweap the sun was dropping and a sun dog appeared. Always a fun sky experience. Sun dogs occur because hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds act as prisms. Didn’t seem cold enough but there it was.
Plus the added bonus of a halo also caused by reflected light on the ice crystals. And really awesome is everyone sees their own particular halo different from someone standing right next to you. How special. Can you see it?
Took lots of photos, but the sunset beckoned. More of that for Thursday’s Sky Watch post.
