2015 Grand Canyon Star Party

There are no bad views of Grand Canyon and that includes the dark skies above.  Get a closer look at the universe at the Grand Canyon Star Party, both North and South Rims, June 13 through 20, 2015.

This event is sponsored by the National Park Service Grand Canyon National Park, the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association (South Rim), and the Saguaro Astronomy Club of Phoenix (North Rim), with funding from Grand Canyon Association.  They call themselves amateur astronomers but are actually more likely to make astronomical discoveries than the professionals as they spend more time looking through a telescope than the pros.  And they like to share their passion and expertise with visitors.

Sign Lodge veranda Star Party North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaTelescope viewing is best after 9 pm and continues well into the night.  A flashlight is recommended but white lights are not permitted because they disrupt night vision.  Please use a red flashlight, easily made by covering any flashlight with red cellophane, nail polish, or permanent marker.  Please have patience waiting in line for telescope viewing.  Nighttime temperatures on both rims can be quite cool, even in summer. Those attending the star party are encouraged to bring warm layers of clothing.

On the South Rim, events include a nightly slide show at 8 pm in the theater of the Grand Canyon Visitor Center, followed by free telescope viewing behind the building.  Green-laser Constellation Tours will be offered at 9, 9:30 & 10 pm. Parking is available in Lots 1 through 4 (use Lot 4 if accessibility is an issue), or arrive by the free Village Route shuttle bus, which runs until 11 pm. To guarantee a seat at the slide show, arrive early; doors open at 7:40 pm.

Kaibab Lodge, located about 6 miles outside the North Rim entrance, will also have telescopes set up on the nearby meadow.

Star Party is included with the price of park admission.  Join in watching the night sky.

Arizona Trail

01 AZ trail NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

I have now walked two short parts of the Arizona trail with Mike and another on my own to the North Rim Lookout Tower. So far the trail has been old two-track road.

02 Mike's backpack weighing 31 lbs NR GRCA NP AZ (768x1024)

Mike wanted to test out his backpack for a future canyon hike. I was concerned about weight.

Brachiopod

We always find fossils.

04 Mike fossil sponge bowling AZ trail NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Mike invented fossil sponge bowling along the trail. Hey, maybe it will catch on.

Of course we saw some mushrooms. Looks like this one met a truck boot.

Hiking a piece of the Arizona Trail

A long line to get into Grand Canyon National Park
After two gray rainy days off work, Thursday the sun broke through at least some of the clouds and I finally went hiking. Just east of the entrance station a one mile section of the Arizona trail wanders through the forest.

Arizona Trail
“The Arizona Trail is a continuous, 800+ mile diverse and scenic trail across Arizona from Mexico to Utah. It links deserts, mountains, canyons, communities and people. Currently 95% of the trail is complete.” From their site.

At almost 9,000 feet (2,743 m) the forest is a diverse mix of fir, aspen and ponderosa pine.

Splintered trunk giving me the Peace sign
The trail is called a two-track, for obvious reasons.

Aspen leaves rattle in the wind
The temperature was perfect for hiking, about mid 60sF (19C), the clouds moved in and out with the possible threat of rain, and the light breeze brought the Aspens to life. Aspen leaves have flat stems that allow leaf movement at the slightest breeze. Thus called Quaking Aspen.

Scat from maybe coyote.

Wonder who lives in there?
There was evidence of animals.

Black Headed Grosbeak
Birdsong filled the air. Illusive little buggers that they are.

Mountain Short Horned Lizard
This little lizard posed on the trail for me. (Does it look a little like the sterling silver pin I bought last week?]

Quartz in limestone
Of course I had to look at the rocks along the way.

Which way did I go?
It took me over an hour to arrive at the junction where the Arizona trail continues north. I know, only a mile, but I do walk very slowly and took over 100 photos. Just be thankful I didn’t share them all. But there’s more coming from this little hike.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…
