Foto Friday Fun

Zebra Addo Elephant NP SA

This young Burchell’s Zebra keeps an eye on Mom at Addo Elephant National Park taken 2/18/13

Today I choose a favorite photo for a new idea at Geogypsytraveler, Foto Friday Fun.  (I know it’s not Friday.)  But I have 100s of 1000s of photos/fotos to share.  So no time like the present to start sharing those memories of the past.

Here’s the new idea.  At some point during the week I will ask for a random number from commenters between 1 and 5000,  then Friday will post the chosen photo number from my archives, along with a story of course.  Yes, I am anal enough to number—starting with 001 every month—and label all my photos.  Only about half way through over 10,000 from the trip to South Africa alone.  So if you want to see a photo from the old archives you can optionally include a month and year starting at March 26, 1954 (my birth day) with more limitations the further back in time.

If the chosen number belongs to a blogger/website owner, a link to their site can be provided on “Foto Friday Fun” along with the photo.  Feel free to link back and let your friends in on the fun.

Please let me know what you think, make suggestions and recommendations.  I love getting your input.  And I’ll see how this works.

BTW, as I’ve been labeling photos from my recent journey in South Africa I post every 100th one.  So if you want to share more of the journey check out Geogypsytraveler’s Facebook page here.  Or just drop by and say “Hi.”

And if you really like this,  Tweet using #fotofridayfun

Please leave a number from 1 to 5000 in comments for this coming Foto Friday Fun photo.  Thanks for playing along.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Changing Seasons

01 Looking up thru colorful aspen along FR610 Kaibab NF AZ (1024x678)

When the aspen turn I know my season at the Grand Canyon’s North Rim is almost over.  It’s a sweet and sad occasion.  I love being in the park from spring to fall and every year it is difficult to say goodbye.  Yet I really don’t do winter very well so it’s the perfect time to leave before the snow flies.

I’ve been published

01 Gaelyn's book on display in VC at NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x952)

OK, so it’s a Shutterfly book that I partially paid for and not really for sale.  But it’s my first book and hopefully not my last.  Maybe someone will pay me to write books in the future.

02 Going to Grand Canyon book has my Kaibab squirrel photo (768x1024)

This is really my second publication as I’ve actually sold a couple of photos.  Does that make me a professional?

03 Kaibab squirrel GRCA AZ (1024x768)

The above children’s book by Mike Buchheit contains my photo of a Kaibab squirrel.

04e Salt Badwater Basin DEVA NP CA (1024x768)

And soon this photo of salt crystals will be on an interpretive sign in the Death Valley Visitor Center.

05e Brahma & Zoroaster temples from S Kaibab trail GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

You’ve probably seen most if not all of these photos as I consider them some of my best from Grand Canyon.

06 Sun through rain clouds over canyon from Crazy Jug Point Kaibab NF AZ (1024x762)

The Shutterfly software is easy to use yet could have a few more choices in layout or allow for more customization.

07 Colorado River upstream from Tuweep overlook GRCA NP AZ (884x1024)

Although I only placed one photo per page with a brief description there are many more options.

08 Rainbow over Roaring Springs Canyon NR GRCA NP AZ pano (3600x1449) (1024x412)

Rainbow over Roaring Springs Canyon

I struggled just a bit to get the panoramas across two pages.  But after reading suggestions from the forum figured out to cut the pano in half and set it as two images.

Looking up river at Hermit Rapid ~RM95.5 Colorado River

After signing up for Shutterfly, I received a code for a free 8×8, 12-page hardbound book.  Then promptly forgot about it.  They sent me an email reminder with only one week left to get my freebie.  So I busted butt and put this together changing it into an 8×11 and added a few pages.  So it cost me a few bucks.  Yet also provided a great experience as to how it all works.

10 Ranger Gaelyn at Cape Royal NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768) (1024x768)

So now Geogypsy, the Grand Canyon Park Ranger, has been published.  And there are plenty more ideas for the future.

Shutterfly offers a lot of photo print options and they did not pay me for this post.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
