Endings and Beginnings–Grand Canyon and beyond

Snow buried Grand Lodge by Gary Keysar North Rim Grand Canyon National Park Arizona

I’m officially unemployed, at least until next April sometime.  Am I sad?  Yes, I will miss the North Rim and Grand Canyon.  Do I want to stay?  No, there’s way too much snow here in winter.

It’s been yet another awesome season.  My fourth.

I enjoyed leading the Artist-in-Residence program and with the help of other staff as judges there will be a talented and diverse group of artists at the North Rim during the summer of 2012.

I’ve talked to thousands of visitors and hopefully enhanced their experience at Grand Canyon National Park.  Most of them now feel like friends.

Now it’s time to pack it up and get ready to roll.  Planning on pulling out the 20th when Mike and I leave for a road trip into southeastern Utah to visit some National Parks I haven’t seen in over 35 years.

Zion National Park

Sign Zion National Park Utah
Shortly after returning from the Colorado River trip, I took a drive to Hurricane to shop and returned home by way of Zion National Park.
Virgin River Zion National Park Utah
The shuttle ride up Zion Canyon makes many stops at trail heads and ends at the River Walk trail.  No cars are allowed during summer unless you have reservations at the Lodge.

In August the Columbine still bloomed.

And little fishes abounded in the Virgin River.

Didn’t wade upriver in the Narrows like I’d done before.
Monuments of sandstone Zion National Park Utah
Monuments of sandstone tower over the drive east out of Zion.
Walls of sandstone Zion National Park Utah
And the road follows the contour of the canyon walls.
First tunnel Zion National Park Utah
Except where tunnels were built through in 1930.  Over-sized vehicles must make arrangements in advance to drive through the tunnels.
Windows in tunnel wall Zion National Park Utah
Windows were added for light and to disperse car fumes.  I sure couldn’t get a photo out any of the windows as there is no stopping in the tunnels.
Second tunnel Zion National Park Utah
The second tunnel is much shorter.
Checkerboard Mesa Zion National Park Utah
Yet the sculpted sandstone continues.
Have you visited Zion National Park?

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
