MWT – Getting ready for “the hike”

01 GRCA Backcountry permit AZ (800x487)

Got the permit almost two months ago. Mike’s never hiked to the bottom of Grand Canyon before. We drive to the South Rim on Black Friday and have a reservation at Trailer Village for the nights before and after the hike.

02 GRCA water bottles Yarnell AZ (800x514)

Early Saturday morning we hit the South Kaibab trail down, which I’ve never hiked before, 7 miles to Bright Angel campground near the river and Phantom Ranch where we’ll camp two nights. The plan for Sunday is to hike a little ways up the box and to the Clear Creek overlook. Monday we’ll hike 4.5 miles up Bright Angel trail to Indian Garden for the night and then Tuesday the other 4.5 miles back to the South Rim.

03 Slide stopper & boot chain Yarnell AZ (800x526)

Of course, being the end of November, who knows what the weather could throw at us. There could be snow at the rim while we’re sunbathing at the bottom. So, we bought slide stoppers and boot chains just in case. Sure hate to carry the extra weight, but that beats sliding off the trail.

04 Food for canyon hike Yarnell AZ (800x600)

Almost have everything we need: tent, sleeping pads and bags, plenty of water, first aid kit, headlamp, a few clothes, trekking poles, cameras, electrolytes and most of the food.

05 Mike's backpack loaded for canyon hike Yarnell AZ (657x800)

If it was up to Mike he’d be carrying Way too many pounds and bringing the cast iron fry pan. He’s even offered to carry me which I’ll keep in mind for the trip back up. Teehee.

Settling in

01 View of small truck, camper, car, little house, truck & 5th-wheel Yarnell AZ pano (800x227)

Mike and I spent yesterday cleaning and rearranging the little house. This time we’re moving in together. And we both have too much stuff for such a small place.

02 Living & bed room in little house Yarnell AZ (800x587)

That meant I wanted the computer desk by the only window you can see out when sitting down. The view is great once the slide in camper is back on the truck and not in front of the window.

03 Living room & kitchen in little house Yarnell AZ (800x590)

So we had to adjust things a little by moving the furniture in this one room house (OK, there’s a bathroom).

04 Mike leveling 5th-wheel Yarnell AZ (800x600)

Plus Mike got the 5th-wheel parked, leveled and hooked up. A real treat for me not having to do that alone. I sure love the way he spoils me.

05 Gaelyn's bookshelves in little house Yarnell AZ (800x600)

We’ve been slowly moving some things out of the 5th-wheel/closet.

06 New coat rack made by Mike in little house Yarnell AZ (800x517)

Mike made a coat rack

It won’t ALL fit in the little house, but I’ll be working some more things in here and there.

My World changes with the seasons

01 5th-wheel Yarnell AZ pano (800x360)

During winter I’m a vegetable. I hunker in and spend way too much time online which saves me from spending much money.

02 Morning light over Bright Angel Canyon from Lodge GRCA AZ pano (800x351)

Come the much desired spring I return to work as a seasonal Park Ranger at Grand Canyon National Park, the North Rim.

03 Yarnell spring flowers collage (800x678)

Actually I leave Yarnell’s flowering spring.

04 SR67 South entering GRCA North Rim AZ (800x603)

To find winter still clinging to the Colorado Plateau.

05 North Kaibab Trail Roaring Springs Canyon GRCA AZ (800x600)

During training the staff hikes rim-to-rim, north to south.

06 Gaelyn at creek crossing North Kaibab Trail Bright Angel Canyon GRCA AZ (800x600)

This year will be my fourth crossing.

07 GRCA wildflowers collage (618x800)

Summer is my favorite. Flowers start to bloom in June and subtly change through July on the canyon’s rim.

08 Gaelyn with view S from Point Imperial Walhalla Plateau GRCA AZ (800x600)

I greet visitors from around the world who come to see one of the Seven Wonders of the world, Grand Canyon.

09 Rainbow in front of Saddle Mt from Point Imperial Walhalla Plateau GRCA AZ pano (800x278)

Summer monsoons bring the gift of life.

10 GRCA wildlife collage (618x800)

And wildlife abounds.

11 Sunset from Lodge GRCA AZ pano (800x282)

Rangers get paid in sunsets.

12 Fall colors Roaring Springs Canyon N Kaibab trail GRCA AZ (600x800)

When the leaves change colors and fall my work season is over.

13 Little House Yarnell AZ (800x600)

And I return to Yarnell where this winter I’ve been living in the little house with Mike.

14 Sunset Yarnell AZ 2 of 3 (800x600)

So the seasons start again.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
