Atlas carries the world on his shoulders

01 Cram Lighted Globe Supported by Twin Atlases (872x850)

Stories differ whether Atlas carried the world, held pillars apart that balanced the earth or held the heavens from crushing the earth.

02 Sampling of road atlases (1024x768)

I am a traveler and have an addiction for maps.

03 Cram Lighted Globe Supported by Twin Atlases (1024x889)

What better than a globe of the world.  Maybe a little out of date with a few country names, but hey that happens.  Berta loaned it to me.

04 Cram Lighted Globe Supported by Twin Atlases (1024x768)

Bronze Atlas crouches under both sides of the globe.

05 Cram Lighted Globe Supported by Twin Atlases (1024x1009)

The best part is it lights up.  Oh the dreams I’m having as I circumnavigate the world.  Where do you dream to travel?

Nampaweap Rock Art Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument

01 Jake guiding me out of camp Toroweap GRCA NP AZ (1024x678)

It was a little too hot to hang out at Toroweap during the day so we drove off to look for some rock art.  I told you the road was terrible.  Jake guided me over the giant boulders of slick rock to get out of the campground.  You Need a high clearance vehicle and I was in 4×4.

02 Nampaweap Rock Art trail BLM AZ 1of2 (1024x678)

The Nampaweap trail is well named, a Paiute word meaning “foot canyon”, and proved to be an easy walk on an old two-track road.

03 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (678x1024)

This is one of the largest known rock art sites in northern Arizona and is located in the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument.  The Archaic people left these behind about 1000 years ago.

04 Columnar basalt Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (1024x678)

The site is .5 mile (.8 km) long and contains thousands of petroglyphs on hundreds of basalt boulders.

05 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (1024x678)

Archaeologists don’t know what most of these designs mean.  Use your imagination.

06 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (1024x678)

Locals call it Billy Goat Canyon because of the large numbers of mountain sheep in the rock at.

07 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (678x1024)

This looks like corn to me.  What do you see?

08 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (678x1024)

These tiny hands measure about two inches square.

09 Nampaweap Rock Art Site BLM AZ (678x1024)

But what the heck is this?

This canyon may have been an important travel corridor from the Grand Canyon to the ponderosa pine country around Mt Trumbull.  The site can be accessed off the Mt Trumbull road 3 miles east of the Mt Trumull trailhead sign and visitor register or 3.5 miles west of the Toroweap road.  If you visit this ancient rock art site, or any other, please use respect and help protect the site.

North Rim Grand Lodge at Grand Canyon shutting down for winter

01 Fall leaves NR GRCA NP AZ (829x1024)

Stop, don’t drive up to the North Rim expecting a room at the inn.  Even the Autumn leaves are falling fast.

02 Deva, Brahma & Zoroaster temples with fall oak leaves NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x443)

But of course the canyon isn’t going anywhere.

03 Fall colors by Grand Lodge NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x678)

October 15th marks the last night cabin lodging at the North Rim is available.  Breakfast on the 16th is the last meal served for the season.  I’ll be there with staff for the last breakfast.  Think about making reservations for next year when we reopen May 15th.

04 Fall colors by cabins NR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x957)

You can still camp on a first-come-first-serve basis until the entire North Rim closes, scheduled for the morning of November 26th.  Or sooner if measurable snow falls first.  Then the gate at Jacob Lake will be closed for the winter.

05 Snow on Mt Humphrey from NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x518)

The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is open all year.  But usual winter snow of 15 feet make the North Rim inaccessible by car.  You can however hike across canyon and camp with a permit.

06 Rocks for geology talk NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x678)

Although I gave my last geology talk of the season  I’ll be hanging around just a little longer for a special event that I’ll share later.  Then I have some really big plans coming up.  Surprise!

07 Red leaves on the mahogany NR GRCA NP AZ (1024x678)

Even the Mahogany shows fall color.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…

…boondocking somewhere in southern Arizona.  In the area, give a shout.
