Getting un stuck in a rut

ART sign storm clouds Yarnell ArizonaI’ve felt stuck in a rut for several months, even before Berta left for Portland (more on that).  Same thing everyday.  Feels like the Bill Murray movie Groundhog Day; wake up, coffee, cat, computer, eat, eat, eat, goodnight.  It’s been extremely hard to get excited about anything with my best friend dying, no job, and generally feeling like I lost my identity.  But I’m finally working on getting un-stuck.

hummingbird on feeder Yarnell ArizonaI wrote about the local wildlife last month and am still seeing them around.  Cottontail bunny shows up about an hour before sunset.  Hung a second hummingbird feeder that I can see from the door.  While out watering I saw a coyote climb out of the wash to the opposite side.

Sierra cat glass over lizard Yarnell ArizonaSierra caught a lizard and brought it into the house.  Then of course she lost it because she really just wants to play with them. Oh boy, now we have another new roommate. It’s tail broke off and was laying on the floor with just a little movement before I threw it away. Hope the poor thing isn’t looking for that and thank goodness they grow back.  About an hour later Sierra re-caught the poor tailless lizard but wouldn’t take it outside.  So, I trapped it with my handy dandy glass and cardboard and managed to spare its life.  Ants, scorpions, spiders, flies, and cockroaches. I would so rather be in my own house on wheels.

cement slab Weaver Mountains sunset SR89 Yarnell Hill ArizonaI’ve taken a lot of sunset and moonrise shots this past winter from the yard and just down the street in Yarnell.  For something different I drove part way down SR89, the Yarnell Hill, to a turn-around near the original overlook to the valley below.  According to a local friend, the cement slab I walked across used to be a tourist shop for the view, snacks and such.  Another piece of Yarnell history.

boulders trees sunset sunburst Yarnell ArizonaMy 4th of July excitement included the glow by blacklight of a ½” scorpion hiding in a crack by the AC unit.  I sprayed it with the Terro scorpion killer.  The next morning in the kitchen I killed two more cockroaches on the floor, and a ¼” scorpion in the sink.  The later death by hot coffee.  This is getting very old.  Later, I took the Terro scorpion spray outside and sprayed cracks along the house where I killed another ¼”er.

That night, after a colorful sunset, I started sleeping in my bug and scorpion free camper.  Too difficult to move Sierra, she’s doesn’t like to picked up, so she sleeps in the house for now and greets me at the door in the morning when I come in to start coffee, computer and fresh cat food and water.  Slept good and am un-stuck from the creepy bed.

I made the mistake of stepping on the scale and weigh in at 148 pounds.  I’ve never weighed that much in my life.  No wonder my clothes don’t fit.  Between quitting smoking a year ago and inactivity the pounds just stuck around.  I’m not happy about this, so…

Cottomwood tree Weaver Mts Yarnell ArizonaTime to start walking.  I forgot how nice and peaceful it is in the Weaver Mountains outside my door.

rusty wreck Country Squire station wagon Weaver Mountains Yarnell ArizonaI wandered to a place I’d never been before because I saw a windmill, and it had a cow skull hanging on it.  How weird.  This area I walk in is behind a gate.  Lots of 4-9 acres are plotted out but there’s no utilities and no one living out here.  However it did look like someone at least tried where the windmill is along with some rusty wrecks and a small uninhabited building.  Sadly, 7:30 is already too late to go walking with our summer temperatures in the 90s.  Not sure I’m ready to be out any earlier, yet.

houses yard storm clouds Yarnell Arizona

bushes fence boulder storm clouds Yarnell ArizonaFinally rain is coming into the country.  Friday afternoon wind driven clouds brought a cool caress, thunder, lightning, a refreshing aroma, and maybe three drops of rain.  This followed by a clear day with a few teaser clouds at sunset.

mammatus clouds Yarnell ArizonaSunday afternoon the storm returned and I drove north to shoot it.  Never got out of the car because it came down hard with very high winds. Turned around in only three miles at Peeples Valley then parked for a while at the Yarnell Dollar Store lot and watched the storm approach.  The wind and rain came hard and quick only lasting about 30 minutes.

After dark began a gentler rain pushed by wind with thunder and lightning. I felt the rumbles throughout my body. Cool breezes wafted through the open windows. The fresh smell opened my mind. Light shows in the three directions I could see.  Right then, glad for a dry place to be and not have to drive anywhere because I could get stuck in the mud.  Hope no fires start.

The biggest rut I’m currently stuck in is not traveling.  Four months of going nowhere is just not like me.  That’s the next thing I need to work on.

Sierra cat Yarnell ArizonaUpdate on Berta:  Since saying goodbye as she boarded the airport shuttle May 15th, life for Berta is slip sliding away.  At first she still felt good although sleeping more and even thought about returning to Arizona.  We all knew that wouldn’t happen.  A month passed with little change.  Hospice visits four days a week for about an hour to help out Berta’s daughter.  But that’s not enough, she needs more help and is exhausted mentally and physically.  Berta and I spoke briefly towards the end of June, mostly to reassure each other of our love.  She’s still here physically but doesn’t know what is going on around her.  We all pray she will soon leave this world peacefully.

June is quickly slipping away and it’s summer

It’s summer, still no job and I’m almost settled in to a daily routine after one month in the Yarnell house with Sierra.  Now we wait for rain.

Sierra cat kitchen Yarnell ArizonaI’m still hanging out in Yarnell with Sierra changing my sleeping pattern to an earlier rise than my normal biological clock at 7 am.  At least we’ve compromised from her initial peskiness at 4:30 or 5.  She really just wants the door opened for her convenience.  I also turn on the stove for espresso making and the computer on the way to the bathroom.  TMI.  While I’m prepping my coffee cup Sierra is not so patiently waiting for her water and food bowls to be refreshed.  Do all cats like really fresh cold water from the fridge?  Every time I fill my glass throughout the day she is on the counter helping herself to the top 1/8th inch.  I seem to have become one of those, here’s a photo of my cat, type of people.

boulders tree sunset clouds Yarnell ArizonaI’m currently thinking of local job hunting as a “side hustle” from my real job.  At least one business person in town might be interested in my services as a social media manager.  Joann owns Station of Imagination and is a multi-talented artist: painting, sculpting, puppetry, theatre, and storytelling are listed on her individually painted business cards.  When we met she handed me a pile and let me pick.  Was a tough choice.  She creates amazing stories using puppets and records them but they are not on YouTube just her Facebook page and that needs to be remedied.

Weaver Mountains sunset clouds Yarnell Arizona

Sierra cat driveway Yarnell ArizonaBecause I’ve been using Berta’s car for my minimal running around and it was time according to the mileage sticker in the windshield I took the car in for an oil change.  This little Toyota has always been such a low maintenance car.  However, this time cost a bit more than usual because I had to replace the air filter that had been saturated with Packrat urine,  feces and a nest the size of a football.  I’ve never had that problem before.  But then I’ve never spent summer in Yarnell.  I checked under the truck’s hood as soon as I got home and all’s well.  I will be more vigilant.

Rain was predicted for last weekend and anyone willing was doing a rain dance in Arizona.  Clouds are a typical tease as monsoon is anticipated.  Doesn’t always bring rain but frequently provides nice sunsets.  Temperatures dropped by at least 10°, wind picked up from the southwest, humidity rose enough to feel sultry.  Oh yea, so over 30% is sultry in Arizona.  I experienced the smell of rain coming to our parched landscape.  Overcast with a light breeze brought a few drops Friday afternoon.

water rusty stove top painted rock Yarnell Arizona

low clouds Weaver Mountain boulders Yarnell ArizonaThen it rained lightly over night leaving petrichor and puddles in the morning.  Gray sky hung low over the Weaver Mountains.  Dripping occurred.  A friend’s gauge measured .52”.

Father’s Day.  I miss my Dad, like many of you who’ve lost parents.  And if you’re lucky enough to still have a father in your life I hope you think of him every day.  I was bored, tired of sitting constantly at the computer all day labeling photos. Keep thinking of moving more stuff into the house but then am sure as soon as I do that I’ll get a job offer somewhere and have to move it all again. Including Sierra. I guess if I don’t have a job elsewhere by the end of June, I for sure won’t be Rangering this summer. That’s really hard to take.

Sierra cat sleeping floor by my chair Yarnell ArizonaI find living under the demands of a cat to be entertaining.  From a sound sleep to frantically running from one of the the 55 feet to the other, shedding along the way.  Charging the door with a surprise attack.  (It’s usually open for her convenience.) Meows I don’t understand. Out exploring for 10 minutes then in for a two-hour nap. Body rub on legs then outside to guard the door with the same basic view I do. Think she needs to get out more? Am I talking about Sierra or me?

I use the portable black-light every night to check the bed for scorpions. Also walk around the house and have gotten to recognize the other unusual glow-in-the-dark places otherwise never noticed. The dead scorpion still glows behind the picture above the stove. I haven’t figured out how to photograph that. Body fluids glow so stay out of the bathroom unless you’re a serious clean freak or have a strong stomach.

And I’ve been fighting ants.  They are so small as almost not to be seen if they weren’t marching in a line for…  at this point I don’t know what/where as the kitchen is cleaner than I’ve ever seen.  Especially for my kitchen.  Nasty spray only solved the problem briefly.  Borax wasn’t available at the last grocery store I was in.  Once again, hats off to the Yarnell hardware store for stocking Terro, a proven ant killer in my house.  Sorry, I don’t really like to kill anything and can sit watching ants for hours, outside.  The main ingredient is Borax, a natural mineral also commonly found in other household items including hand soap, laundry boosters, mouthwash and toothpaste. Although it is not generally toxic to humans or pets, borax disrupts the ant’s digestive system and slowly kills them.  Please don’t judge me, it’s working.

boulder grasses late light Antelope Peak Yarnell ArizonaSo tomorrow is the first official day of summer and would have been my mother’s 92nd birthday.   I’m hoping that means monsoon is on its way to quench the earth and bring on some awesome sunsets, and maybe even a few sunrises.  Stay tuned for whatever’s next.

Settling into June in Yarnell

hummingbird & feeder Yarnell ArizonaI spend a lot of time watching the world go by while settling into June in Yarnell because there isn’t a whole lot else to do.  Comfortable daytime temperatures in the low 90s and perfect sleeping in the low 60s.  I have labeled over 1200 photos this month so am into February 2018 now.  It’s fun to be reminded of some winter travels to the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.  But otherwise, the days are rather routine with some effort at finding a job.

runners 19K Yarnell Memorial Run Lakewood Drive Yarnell ArizonaJune started off with the 5th annual Yarnell Memorial Run which maxed out at 500 registrations for 19K, 10K, and 5K versions looping around our neighborhoods.  Glad they weren’t all on the street at once.  That’s almost more than our little town’s total population even during the heat of summer when the southern Arizonans come up in elevation to cool off.  With that said, the race started at 7am and was over by about 10am to avoid the warmest part of even our 80° day.  Not being a runner, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me but whatever floats your boat as they say.  Like watching paint dry, only slower.  As Yogi says, it’s not a spectator sport.  Obviously the first group of 19k runners are the most serious and pay total attention to the job at foot.

I mentioned to several people around town that I’m looking for a job and after three folks said “talk to Ed at the Emporium” I headed into town around noon figuring it might be safe without much crowd from the race.  I needn’t have worried.  I offered my services to cover hours in the store which aren’t currently needed.  And I also offered to help with social media for his business as well as other businesses in town and the chamber of commerce.  If you google Yarnell, the local websites are either under construction or not frequently updated.  I’d almost happily stay in Yarnell this summer if I can make a little money but nothing yet.

Also on the job front, I was referred to Great Basin National Park located in central Nevada along the eastern border with Utah.  From 13,000 foot Wheeler Peak to underground in Lehman Caves this park that I’ve never visited might be diverse enough to challenge me.  And I’m still waiting to hear from the Inyo National Forest in California.  No guarantees but I should know one way or the other soon.  Plus I recently applied to Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington and Cape Lookout State Park in Oregon.  Maybe I can get a Ranger job for the summer yet.  Crossing fingers anyway.

Sierra cat doorway view Yarnell ArizonaI spent an entire afternoon trying to figure out Fiverr to sell myself online for some income.  Nothing illegal mind you.  Services like data entry, writing, photography, voice overs…  I am open to suggestions.  I don’t want to slather the blog’s sidebar with “Buy Buy Buy” advertising.  It’s not my thing to endorse products I don’t support and believe in and they are few.  And besides, that’s no guarantee to income.

hotshot statue Yarnell Memorial Hotshot State Park ArizonaOne morning I drove the 30 miles to Wickenburg to shop for fresh fruits and vegies.  On the way stopped at the Granite Mountain Hotshot Memorial State Park.  Parking, along the downhill lane only on State Route 89, for the 2.85 mile trail with a 1200 foot gain and 200+ stairs carved out of the rock leads to a shaded bench looking down to where the 19 firefighters died during the 2013 Yarnell Fire.  In the past five months, every time I drove by here the Ranger was sitting in the State Park truck and I thought, I want that job.  Although to be honest I wouldn’t want to just sit all day on the job.  During the winter the small parking lot was always full and some contractor ran van shuttles between Yarnell and Congress.  So I never tried to stop before and have no intention of hiking this trail anyway.  This day, I was happily surprised to see a Ranger standing by the trailhead with a table of information and sales goods.  I mentioned the truck Ranger who was this young man’s predecessor as he’s only been on the job for three weeks.  Guess I missed that job announcement.

Gorditas Mexican food truck Wickenburg ArizonaAnyway, I enjoyed lunch at Gorditas food truck in the grocery store parking lot which probably saved me money not shopping while hungry.  The $4 gordita sandwich with pork was delicious.  Did the shopping and got out of town just before the temperature broke triple digits.

Joshua tree & white flowering saguaros SR89 Arizona

white saguaro flowers SR89 ArizonaThen on the way home I stopped at the base of the Yarnell Hill along State Route 89 where a few flowers still bloomed on a small cluster of saguaros.

Kaibab squirrel hat pinA dear friend working at the mule desk on the North Rim sent me a Kaibab squirrel hat pin to add to my collection.  I miss her, others, the canyon, and those sweet little squirrels.

Gaelyn & Danny Bessemer MichiganI enjoyed company when a long-time friend from growing up in Illinois came for a visit from her current traveling nurse job about two hours away in Cottonwood.  She brought me an old (1974?) photo of me and Danny the boyfriend in Bessemer, Michigan on a vacation we shared.  Five hours quickly slipped by with chatting about our lives.  Where are we going from here?  I have no immediate plans yet my bucket list is lifetimes long.  She has no bucket list.  Berta said the same.  I am confused by that.  I thought everybody has a bucket list.  Do you?

scorpion Yarnell ArizonaI slayed my first in-house scorpion for the summer.  I honestly don’t want to kill them but this one was out of reach, high on a wall above a beautiful print of a strong woman who I hoped would protect me, and my spider roommates don’t seem to eat them.  I sprayed that SOB with the nasty shit and stopped it dead in its tracks.  And this is why I check the bed every night with the blacklight flashlight for the eerie glow of scorpions in or around the bed.  Now I’m more freaked out about them than ever.

tree boulders Weaver Mountains sun sunburst clouds Yarnell ArizonaI watch the sun rise (sometimes) and set (always) hoping for colorful clouds.  Occasionally the clouds drift away and the day turns into fun with the sun.

Sierra cat Yarnell ArizonaOtherwise, Sierra and I are just chilling.  Come the end of the day, I wonder where it went and what did I do.  It’s hard to believe the month is almost half over already and I wonder if I’ll spend the rest of June in Yarnell.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
