My gypsy life started in the 1970s

USA map route 1975 road trip1975 road trip

I already have a series of my gypsy life since becoming a seasonal Park Ranger in 1992, so why not back up a little further to when this gypsy lifestyle began.

I appreciate all the suggestions to keep my 5th-wheel, and truth be told I lean that way also.  However, I’ve lived in so many different vehicles and they have all been perfect, for a while.  Yet as life changes so do our homes.

Truck going under camper Kanab UtahI don’t know what direction this gypsy life is going next.  If/when I accept a summer national park job it would be great to live in the big 5th-wheel, if there is that option in the park.  But then I have to take the camper off the truck to tow the 5er.  It’s a pain in the butt to get the camper off and on and I can’t do it alone.  Plus then store it somewhere until I can retrieve it.  That barely works from the North Rim being only 360 miles away.  It wouldn’t be convenient any further.  I’d rather not be without the comforts of camping/glamping in the truck camper.  So I could live in it full-time with a couple fixes and certain inconveniences like moving it every time I drive somewhere.

Camping at Braidwood with Denverdog Illinois 06-1975 This got me to thinking of all the rigs I’ve lived in over the years of my gypsy life, which is what this post was going to be about.  But then I started writing, and this story of the first home on wheels poured out.  And there weren’t really any conveniences but was one step up from a tent.

1974-Chevrolet-VegaMy first home on wheels

I started my gypsy life on the road in 1975 when I spent three months in a 1974 Chevy Vega hatchback.  Because my Dad was in the car business I scored a deal when the car, with only 1000 miles on it, was traded in for a Cadillac.  He co-signed a loan with me and at 21 years old I felt ready to travel and wanted to see the west and visit national parks.  I was a little worried about traveling alone so I got a large puppy and slept in the back with Denver dog on my feet.  Used magnets to drape mosquito netting off the lifted hatch but the dog could get out so that didn’t work.  An ice chest and one burner camp stove served well.   My Golden Eagle pass worked for park entries and campground discounts.  People I met were friendly yet concerned about my traveling alone.  I learned it was OK, listened to my intuition, and discovered I’m good company.  I mastered the fear of being alone.

Chicago to Colorado route 1975 road tripThe journey began driving freeways nonstop to Colorado because I knew there wasn’t a lot to see along the way.  Fell in love with the majestic Rocky Mountains while visiting my first national park.  I wanted to live there some day.  Hasn’t happened, yet.

Colorado & Utah map route 1975 road tripWith my trusty Rand McNally atlas I followed the ‘blue highways’ as two-lane roads were called back then.  Now interstates are blue on the map, I’ve always tried to avoid those.  I visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Mesa Verde National Parks.

Garry Brother 4cornersImage borrowed from Garry, friend and blogger, of his brother in about the right era

One late and dusky afternoon I stopped at Four Corners, a desolate and remote location where four states’ boundaries meet.  The only thing there was a concrete slab with lines and state names.  Much different from what I understand it is today.  The only sign of life, a mangy dog.

Lake Powell UtahTaken in 2011 from a boat

I drove into Utah and according to my map would follow a paved road to Lake Powell.  In reality, I drove two hours on what looked like the bulldozer had just pushed the red rock out of the way.  By the time I saw water my burgundy Vega was orange and so were the dog and I.  Hot and dusty, I parked on slickrock and we both fell into the refreshing water.  To this day, I have no idea what road that was or where we were exactly.

last light temples San Fransisco peaks sunset North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaTaken in 2017

Then I went to Canyonlands, Arches, and Capitol Reef national parks.  I vaguely remember these places as it was hot summer and I couldn’t hike because the dog would have baked in the car.  After a quick drive into Bryce Canyon National Park I ended up at the North Rim of Grand Canyon.  I remember standing on the Lodge verandah and thinking, oh boy another big hole in the ground.  I was on canyon overload.  Little did I know I would live and work there some day.  I left for Las Vegas via Zion National Park.  A couple days staying with friends in the summer heat of Vegas was plenty and I continued toward the California coast where I had relatives living east of Los Angeles.

west coast map route 1975 road tripAfter hanging out with cousins and meeting up with a high school friend living at a commune in Ojai I headed north up Hwy 101.  Because I had taken a leave of absence from my Illinois job at Vaughn/Jacklin Corp they agreed to pay me for a few days visiting other seed companies.  I loved eating out of the vegetable trial fields with a salt shaker in my pocket.  They would tour me around and buy lunch.  One time I had too much wine with lunch and later pulled onto the shoulder to sleep it off.  A cop knocked on my window waking me when the dog barked.  He made me walk toe heel and touch my nose.  I passed the tests and he let me go.

Washington map route 1975 road tripContinued driving the Highway 1 coastal route north camping along the way.  Then couldn’t afford the bridge toll at Astoria so headed east to the free I5 bridge crossing the Columbia River.  A quick stop in Olympia where I toured the brewery.  I was more of a beer drinker then and there weren’t any micro-brews around.  Next headed east over the Cascades to Wenatchee where a cousin went to school.  Got sick at her place and was running low on funds so my boyfriend wired me money and told me to get home without lollygagging along the way.  And that’s what I did, making it home in a matter of days.

1968 chevy van camper-conversionThis first solo adventure started my gypsy life and prompted me to save money, buy a van, and move to California, the land of golden opportunities, or so I thought.  This will  forever be one of my best road trips and sadly I have no photos from this journey.

What did I do, or didn’t do?

house car shed truckcamper reverse sunset clouds Yarnell ArizonaHome Sweet Home

What did I do?  Not a lota’.  Or more of the same.  My basic story right now is stay home so as not to spend unnecessary money that I don’t have.  Does leave me a lot of time to label and work on photos.  Not to mention all the time I waste online.  And I messed with the website which might be good and bad.

tree Weaver Mountains sunset clouds Yarnell ArizonaSunset view over the Weaver Mountains from the end of the driveway

Still driving a couple locals to town for groceries and doctor appointments.  Still volunteering one day a week at the local YRCC community thrift store.  Dangerous when I’m there as I always buy something, the deals and stuff are so good.

Last month I sold a print of Sun Sets At The End Of The Line to Sally, a long-time virtual friend.  She purchased the print through my Fine Art America (FAA) GLOlmsted Photography website and was disappointed that it didn’t have my watermark.  There is actually disagreement over watermarking printed photographs and FAA doesn’t recommend it.  In addition, the image is an unusual size at 14×9.375”, not a standard like 8×10 or 14×11”.  So that either requires major cropping or custom matte and frame.  Something I didn’t even think about until recently.  The camera doesn’t typically take standard print sizes.  That doesn’t matter much in the webworld, although I’ve seen many sites crop photos.  Cropping this particular shot would ruin it IMHO.

So, when Sally decided to add Waiting for the Train to her walls I emailed her a high resolution, already cropped my way one inch from the top to a 5×7 print with watermark.

2 photos framedThen she sent the digital copy to a local printer and easily bought a frame and matte.  Transactions were done online between us for payment through PayPal.  This is a service I’ll gladly offer anyone.  So if you ever see a photo you want let me know.  My prices are reasonable.

Sierra cat in window foggy front yard view Yarnell ArizonaI didn’t go out much with several days of gray and rain followed by clear and cold.  Sierra spends more time inside when the temperatures drop.  We want to go outside, but not far from the house.  She frequently sits on the sunny stoop, but not for long if a cold wind ruffles her fur.  She also spends more time on my lap.  Not sure who is keeping who warm in that case.  Sometimes I feel like a grumbly ole bear when it comes to the cold of winter, even in Arizona.

I’ve spent a lot of time watching the birds.  Been too cheap to buy birdseed but get a bucket filled by a friend when needed.  Instead of filling a feeder I simply broadcast a few handfuls out in the morning where I can see from my desk. (My desk is a rather make-do folding table situation so I can watch outside.)

Hummingbird & feeder sunset Yarnell ArizonaAlso one hummingbird feeder that I try to remember to bring in over the freezing cold nights.  Sometimes I forget and bring it in the morning to thaw out.  I read somewhere that super cold water is bad for the little hummers, which totally made sense to me.  Could be like an ice cream brain freeze but deadly.

snow yard trees Yarnell Arizona

snow shed fort trees Yarnell ArizonaYesterday morning awoke to a light dusting of snow.  Oh joy.  Not my favorite weather event especially if I have to go out further than my yard.  And sadly, I had to drive to Prescott which thankfully turned out OK.  Apologies to those who are experiencing multiple inches to feet of this white stuff but that’s one of the reasons I live in Arizona.

Gaelyn selfie I dressed up for the weather.

What I didn’t do is continue to empty the 5th-wheel.  Although it is listed for sale in several places I’ve had no bites.  Part of me says to keep it as I may need/want that bigger home someday and in another year it will be paid for.

I’m still asking myself, “what did I do” by deactivating the Jetpack plugin on this blog last week.  I’d been playing around, adding some new items to the sidebar.  Why didn’t I notice the items that were missing?  After a few days I did miss the way Jetpack displayed stats.  And then I noticed nobody leaving a comment from the last post.  Oops!  If you ever subscribed to get an email notification when I post that might be gone.  If you’re not getting notifications and still want to I think you’ll have to sign up again.  Commenting may be back to using the “Tab” key to move from one information block to another, at least according to one reader.  I re-activated Jetpack and had to reset a bunch of things.  Please let me know if you notice a difference or any problems.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Early Spring cleaning to get rid of stuff

Mule deer yard Yarnell ArizonaOK, it’s not quite spring even in Arizona—though 59/39° might feel like it from the polar vortex region—but it feels like time to down-size and get rid of stuff.

5th-wheel shed Yarnell ArizonaFeeling the need to lighten my load.  Could be because I don’t have a clear path, know what I’m doing or where I’m going next.  Almost a year since life got turned upside down when Berta was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.  Spring would be my normal time to leave Yarnell for the North Rim, or some ranger job somewhere.  When that didn’t happen last year my 5th-wheel home sat unlived in, now for over a year.  Does that tell me I don’t need it any more?

Truck & 2004 M34-TLB 36’ Keystone Challenger 5th-wheelRV 4 SALE

I listed the 5th-wheel for sale on the blog, Facebook, and Craigslist.  It’s still full of stuff.  I could immediately put stuff in a small shed on the property where it’s parked next door to the house lot I’ve been living in.  I’m not real motivated to do it.  Having lived without for over a year tells me it’s time to get rid of stuff.

Dull women have immaculate homes sign in RVI dislike cleaning and have said for years, the dust is velvet and the cobwebs are silk thread.  It’s my dirt and I live with it.

Heck, I can barely keep one place a semblance of clean and right now my stuff is spread around three places.  The 5th-wheel can’t be lived in due to lack of hookups and zoning laws.  The truck camper is at least operational when needed but lacks running water, and space.  The house came fully furnished so I’ve only added my necessary stuff into the mix.

Sierra cat Yarnell ArizonaThe deep red carpet typically looks like reverse measles because of my beautiful, shedding, long-haired cat.  The truck camper is a furry mess.  Champagne beige carpet in the 5th-wheel would best match Sierra’s color but she’s never gotten to live there.

Jewelry for Sale

jewelry sale in shed Yarnell ArizonaOK, so enough cleaning, or not cleaning.  I have jewelry for sale, no extra charge for the tarnish.  The pre-Christmas jewelry sale is still set up in the shed so maybe before Valentine’s Day I’ll set the signs out for a Saturday Sale.

Berta’s daughter and SIL should be here in March to go through stuff.  There’s a lot of stuff.  Berta collected really cool stuff, lots of it.     And her daughter likes it all, or almost all.  But has a house full herself and knows she can’t keep it all.  Don’t think they’ve decided whether to keep the AZ properties or not.  Either way, I know I can’t live here for free forever.  And unless the house could be sealed better against critters I wouldn’t even want to rent it.  (Woke up Monday morning with a two inch scorpion crawling up the wall three feet above my head.

Thank goodness the government is open again, at least for a while.  I feel sorry for the hiring folks just now getting ready for summer season, especially on top of catching up with so much else.  I applied to several parks for summer.   The gov wheels move so slow.  Still waiting.  I’m also keeping an eye on $/volunteer camp gigs.  And I’m not giving up on public speaking events.

cobwebs Yarnell ArizonaSo speaking of getting rid of stuff, that should include the winter cobwebs in my head.  I’m mostly thinking out loud here.  Thanks for listening.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…
