03 February 2012

Good night Grand Canyon

01 Last light on NR from Yavapai Pt SR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x342)

The History Symposium broke up a little early Friday afternoon so I quickly headed for the canyon rim at nearby Yavapai Point to see the last light on the canyon walls.  Outstanding as usual.

02 Buck mule deer at Yavapai Pt parking lot SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x757)

And very cold.  So I slipped back into my warm truck to thaw out the picture-taking gloveless hands and saw this young fellow through my windshield.

03 Doe mule deer crossing sidewalk to Yavapai Pt overlook SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

Then this sweet young gal crossed the trail in front of me returning to the rim.

04 Last light on top layers from Yavapai Pt SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x755)

I barely caught the last light on the top layers.

05 Soft glow over canyon from Yavapai Pt SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x767)

Then the light slipped away leaving a soft glow.

06 Sunset from Yavapai Pt SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

And a subtle show to the west.

07 Sunset from Yavapai Pt parking lot SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)

With frozen hands I returned to the truck and rushed off for the Friday night banquet speaker, Wayne Raney talking about the many geologists who have studied Grand Canyon.

No place like home

079 (1024x768)
First home or second home, I love them both.  This weekend at Grand Canyon National Park certainly felt like a homecoming.  The History Symposium never stopped being of vast interest.  Today I leave the canyon for my other home. But not until after I visit the Kolb Studio exhibit.

Grand Canyon History Symposium

01 Bright Angel Canyon & NR with snow from SR GRCA NP AZ (800x600)
Looking toward the North Rim
Yippee, I’m headed to Grand Canyon National Park’s South Rim for the Grand Canyon History Symposium. The North Rim, where I work summers, is closed for the winter.  Going to pack my long-johns and polypropylene as there’s snow on the ground and it’s been cold and windy.
02 GRCA Historical Society logo
Friday I’ll be a volunteer at the registration desk.
“The Grand Canyon Historical Society is pleased to announce the 3rd Grand Canyon History Symposium, a gathering of professional and avocational historians who will speak about historical topics specific to Grand Canyon National Park.  The goals of the symposium are to increase the knowledge and understanding of the history pertaining to the Grand Canyon and adjacent areas, and to promote communication and sharing among canyon historians, writers and enthusiasts.”
03 Train station SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)
Train station on South Rim
Some symposium attendees will ride the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams Depot to the South Rim which includes a Wild West Shootout.  I’ve opted to drive up.
04 Ellsworth & Emery Kolb lifesize cutouts Kolb Studio Residence tour SR GRCA NP AZ (600x800)
Ellsworth & Emery Kolb
Field trips include a tour of the historic Kolb Studio and residence lead by the Grand Canyon Field Institute’s director Mike Buchheit, a walk on The Trail of Time guided by geologist Wayne Raney…
05 Wooden dory Wen Nevills Expedition at VC, training, SR GRCA NP AZ (1024x768)
…a tour of the Park’s collection of historic river-running boats and other important artifacts of Grand Canyon river history by river runner Brad Dimock, and a Grand Canyon cemetery tour by historian John Azar.
06 Colorado River trip (768x1024)
The lineup of speakers is long and covers a variety of topics including archaeology, Native Americans, Colorado River, transportation, cowboys, geologists, families from the canyon, explorers, disasters, and artists.  To view a complete schedule of speakers go here.
07 Storm & rainbow over canyon SR GRCA NP AZ pano (1024x530)
I’m pretty excited about all of this, get to learn while at Grand Canyon. I been missing that big ditch.

This is what Kolb Studio looked like when I was on the South Rim last year in February.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…
