This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 14 readers including several birthday shots at Grand Canyon and South Africa.  Could that be because my birthday is next month?

Melissa chose #8359.  I love shadow shots that make me look tall with long legs, neither of which I have.  Here I was hiking on the Rainbow Rim near Parissawampitts Point.  I had just spent the afternoon driving through the Kaibab National Forest shooting the variety of Autumn colors the end of September 2014.

Yogi chose #8711.  Desert View Watchtower is one of my favorite viewpoints on the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park.  Even better, this was on my birthday in 2015.  It’s fitting Yogi got this shot as he, like me, celebrates birthdays for many days.  And this wasn’t the first time I was gifted the canyon.

Rita chose #7321.  One of many unidentified succulents seen along a trail in South Africa.  Although a nice walk, that was secondary to soaking in hot water at Warmwaterberg Spa in a private Roman like bath.

Doris chose #4356.  If you’ve visited the North Rim of Grand Canyon this is an iconic view from the lodge veranda.  If you’re lucky, a monsoon storm will make it even more dramatic.

Lisa chose #1306.  Yes, it’s lichen on limestone at the Grand Canyon because I like micro-environments as much as big landscapes.

Sherry chose #9090, the top of Augrabies Falls, a national park in South Africa.  So much more to see there than waterfalls like wildlife and a mix of geology.  And, I spent my birthday there in 2014.

Sue chose #7864, “for my son’s birthday.”  You’ll already note the birthday theme this week.  But this snowy shot was taken 1-10-16, no birthdays I know of, along the Virgin River in Zion National Park.  Actually drove up the canyon because it’s much quieter and less crowded during winter.

Jo and random dot org chose #8354.  A South Rim Grand Canyon view from Moran Point showing mostly the bottom half of the canyon, half a mile in depth and 1500 million years of time.  I took this photo on my birthday visit in 2015.

Jeff chose #853, “the American Legion Post number where we camped this trip.”  No camping on this Pleasant Valley meadow, or Legion Post either, but other meadows on the North Kaibab National Forest can be found for camping.

Liberalwarrior chose #6019, his lucky dart board throw.  I feel lucky to have seen this threatened species African Black Oystercatcher in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.  You’ll be lucky to see it in almost the center of the photo.

Diane and Nigel chose #2102.     Looking upstream at the Colorado River 3000 feet below in bright morning light from Toroweap overlook my first visit in 2010 for a friend’s birthday.

Jennifer chose #4444.  Sunset over the Mesquite Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, California during a windy November 2017 visit.

Jodee and Bill chose #3421.  Full moon rise at sunset over the Inyo Mountains while camped in the BLM managed Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California during March 2017.

Sallie and Bill chose #435.  A portion of the “little apartment” or guesthouse behind Berta’s house in Yarnell before the fire.  Now it’s all gone.

My choice is an attempted shot of the setting crescent moon from my Kofa NWR camp a few nights back.  Should have dug out the tripod because it wasn’t easy to hand-hold the camera for 1/8th of second.  Still, kinda’ cool.

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including many moods of Grand Canyon, flowers, several panoramas, and a special guest.

liberalwarrior chose #7777.  I was excited when this gem came up of late light and shapely shadows from the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park 6-28-16.  And then they got better.

Melissa chose #1950.  Always an added surprise when an older photo and camera provide a fun image.  This early morning light on the temples was captured from the North Rim Lodge with a beloved Fuji P&S 8-28-10.

Diane and Nigel chose #1402.  She takes awesome images of insects, and this shot isn’t bad though you might have noticed this Long-horned Beetle is missing a leg.  Taken on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park 8-23-09.

Lisa chose #1018, one of three in a panorama which blew me away when I processed the shot.  With a P&S Canon taken 5-31-09 from Point Imperial on the North Rim Grand Canyon.  Didn’t I say they got better.  Definitely my favorite this week.

Yogi chose #3276.  Another little gem, especially as the Palm Canyon trail is closed due to a fire last year.  I hiked this trail in Anza-Borrego Desert California State Park during January 2015.

Rita chose #9365.  These Beavertail cactus flowered during mid-April in 2015 in Congress, Arizona.  Spring blooms can occur from February to June in different parts of Arizona.  I hope to catch some soon.

Sue chose #1988, the year she sold flowers at the Tonasket Barter Faire.  That happens to be the year I moved away from Tonasket, though I too had sold at that Barter Faire both before that and after that.  I love the serendipity.  Yet I find no correlation to her chosen image of last light on the Santa Rosa Mountains from my camp in Anza-Borrego on 12-22-14.  Unless she was there and I didn’t know it.

Jodee and Bill chose #3511.  About two weeks after the above shot I visited sculptures like this Sabertooth cat attacking an extinct horse near Borrego Springs.  Part of the Galleta Meadows instalments by Ricardo Bredada.

Sherry chose #6937.  She’s a flower lover but probably hasn’t seen any of these Forest White Sugarbush Protea.  I saw these near George, South Africa and other Protea in different colors in other parts of the country.

Jo chose #1602, a two-shot panorama.  Having already hiked down on the Navajo Loop trail and partway up Wall Street with this look back.  My first visit to Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah 9-21-10.  I anticipate this view again as I return to work this summer at Bryce.

Sallie and Bill chose #2643, a four-shot panorama.  Ranch buildings along the bumpy road to Toroweap, a Grand Canyon overlook.

My choice this week is special guest Ranger Wanda Lust, who some of you may remember from years ago.  She travels with me everywhere but disappears as soon as we’re parked.  I guess neither of us are much for selfies.  This was at our most recent camp along the Colorado River.  More on that later.

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by nine readers including Earth, art, and curls.

Jennifer chose #8888.  Sandstone eroding back to sand along the Wire Pass trail on the hike to the Wave in southern Utah.  As much as she likes rocks, and really who doesn’t, the Wave is a must see even if only in photographs.

Diane and Nigel chose #702.  From first hike on Wire Pass trail in 2009 through slot canyons and on the way to Buckskin Gulch slot canyon.  Such a contrast, a dry desert carved by water.

Sue chose #2020, “just because I want to be optimistic that something good will happen in the coming year.”  I’m with you on that!  And seems many others have chosen this number as the oldest I could find from August 2016, a drive by shot of the clouds in southern Utah, because I’m a nepholographer.

Jeff chose #19, “having just watched “Only the Brave” documentary on the Yarnell fire where 19 firefighters died.” Although I was living at Grand Canyon at the time I considered Yarnell home and have no desire to see this movie.  At another home during 1980 I lived in Hanover Park, Illinois and practiced the craft of stained glass.  My ex-husband had a green thumb.

Melissa chose #521, “my GrandDaughter who Sparkles wherever she goes!”  Quaking Aspen leaves also sparkle when blown in the wind and especially when they turn to gold in the fall.  This shot from 2008 was taken along the edge of Harvey Meadow along the drive to the Widforss trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.

Rita chose #7965.  A light dusting of snow frosts these mesas like a layer cake.  Taken in January 2016–the winter I lived in Kanab, Utah–along SR9 heading west from Zion National Park.

Yogi chose #1177.  Just one shot among thousands of sunsets over the Weaver Mountains from where I lived in Yarnell, Arizona.  This one even includes crepuscular rays.

Jo chose #2008.  This Bolete mushroom—that I think looks like a big muffin—was seen growing along the Arizona Trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon.  Although a delicious edible, it was the only one around so I left it something else to enjoy.

Sallie and Bill chose #67, “The percentage of battery left on my IPad this morning.”  There were no iPads or iAnything back in 1984 when this shot of me was taken in my craft store in Tonasket, Washington.  OMG, look at that hair!  It took four hours to put in the perm-rods for those curls.

My choice is another version of Sunday night’s sunset taken from Shady Lane RV Park in Quartzsite, Arizona where I’m still parked to get the fridge repaired.
