Foto Friday Fun 479: every picture tells a story

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by ten readers including Mesa Verde, Zion, and Grand Canyon National Parks plus a National Fish Hatchery.

Full moon Pt Imperial North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJo chose #7500.  A full moon shot at Solstice from Point Imperial, North Rim Grand Canyon in 2016.

beaded vest museum Mesa Verde National Park ColoradoRita chose #99.  Native bead work displayed in the museum at Mesa Verde National Park when I worked there summer 2005.

rope museum Mesa Verde NP Museum COLiberal Warrior chose #111, for a recent temperature at the farm.  Same place as above, this time hand woven rope from plant materials.

First tunnel Snow Zion National Park SR9 West UtahAlan chose #7671.  The only time I want to travel in the otherwise crowded Zion National Park is winter, and even that not so much because of the cold.  It is my favorite from this week.

Stormy sky over 2 snags Vista Encantada overlook Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaGypsy chose #1214.  I like trees dead or alive, bonus with stormy skies.  These two stood guard on the North Rim at Vista Encantada overlook in 2009.  Wonder if they still survive?

Glory Cape Royal North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaDiane and Nigel chose #2907.  An amazing phenomenon called a glory or broken-spectre shared with friends visiting the North Rim Grand Canyon during June 2015.

Pinecone inside dead tree AZ Trail Kaibab National Forest ArizonaCathy chose #3608.  Difficult to see, but the crack was an obvious pinecone stash seen along the Arizona trail on the Kaibab National Forest, Arizona.  Special thanks to Cathy for sharing my YouTube videos on her Facebook page.   I NEED MORE SUBSCRIBERS!  (Yes, I’m begging.)

Colorado River thru snag at sunset Tuweep North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJennifer chose #2444.  A framed view of the Colorado River at sunset from Toroweap overlook, North Rim Grand Canyon National Park in 2010.  Now days you’ll need a permit for day use and camping.

Rainbow over False Bay from Moonglow B&B Glen Cairn Cape Pennisula South AfricaSherry chose #4773.  Look close for the tiny rainbow across False Bay seen from my balcony at Moonglow B&B, Glen Cairn South Africa.  There were a lot of rainbows that day.

View N & Colorado R from Pima Pt Hermit Rd South Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaSallie and Bill chose #819.  This South Rim Grand Canyon view including the Colorado River was from Pima Point along the Hermit Road.

Mt Hood sunrise Underwood WA Aug 1996

Little White Salmon River WA Aug 1996

Little White Salmon fish hatchery WA Aug 1996My choices from August 1996 when I lived along the Columbia River with a view of Mt Hood while working for US Fish & Wildlife with an office at the Little White Salmon NFH along the river with same name, a tributary of the Columbia.

Foto Friday Fun 478

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by eight readers including a reoccurring theme of snow which seems wonderful while much of the US overheats, unusual dimensional art and three choices from the 22nd of months.  Coincidences?

Snow SR67 N North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaGypsy chose #5207, “for an early Chicago trip…”  Having grown up in the Chicago suburbs, we knew snow.  Not usually in May, like her number indicates and this shot is from.  May 7, 2016 heading north out of the North Rim Grand Canyon before that side was open for the season.  At 8,000 feet, snow is common into June.

Mastadon metal sculptures by Ricardo Breceda Galleta Meadows Borrego Springs CaliforniaDiane and Nigel chose #2207.  Metal sculptures of Mastadons by Ricardo Breceda seen at Galleta Meadows Borrego Springs, California.  Check out this link for more creations.

Fog & snowy view over Transept canyon from RV window North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaCathy chose #0804, “for when my little Sis visits!!”  August should be safe for a no snow visit to Grand Canyon.  This was my RV window view at the North Rim on April 26, 2014, again before the North Rim opens to the public May 15th.

Noah Purifoy's Desert Art Museum Joshua Tree CaliforniaRita chose #7309.  I really wasn’t spying on people.  This is an installation seen at Noah Purifoy’s Desert Art Museum in Joshua Tree, California.

Sunrise over Indian Ocean Scottburgh Caravan Park Scottburgh South AfricaAlan chose #5510.  I am more likely to see sunrise when traveling and camping.  This morning was along the Indian Ocean at Scottburgh Caravan Park, South Africa.

Snow meadow SR67 Kaibab National Forest ArizonaSherry chose #5678.  She may be wishing for snow too.  This shot from a November 2015 drive on the Kaibab National Forest before the North Rim closed the end of the month.

Ammonite fossil Wild Coast Sun Port Edward South AfricaJo chose #5654.  Check out the size of that fossilized Ammonite seen along the Wild Coast of the Indian Ocean at Mzamba fossil site near Port Edward, South Africa.

Slot canyon White Domes Trail Valley of Fire State Park NevadaJeff chose #8199, “the price of diesel in Bridgeport CA as we passed through” and didn’t need fuel.  Only food fuel needed for the White Domes Trail in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada.

Ranger Gaelyn from Oregon Caves at Valley of the Rogue State Park program Oregon

Ranger Gaelyn from Oregon Caves at Valley of the Rogue State Park program OregonMy choices from July 2006 when Ranger Gaelyn took an Oregon Caves slide show to Valley of the Rogue State Park.

Foto Friday Fun 477: every picture tells a story

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including rock, glass, and dramatic skies from the American West and South Africa.

Sunset Cape Royal Walhalla Plateau North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaDiane and Nigel chose #1507.  Sunset from Cape Royal overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.

Upper opening Antelope Slot Canyon Page ArizonaAlan chose #1055, a vertical panorama.  This is the turnaround end looking back into Upper Antelope Slot Canyon located near Page, Arizona.  Can only visit on a reserved tour with a Navajo guide.  Note the graffiti, tours help reduce that kind of vandalism.  Highly recommend this experience.

Creek crossing Drakensburg hike KwaZulu-Natal South AfricaSue chose #2005, “for the first time we camped at Union Creek on the Rogue in the first baby MoHo.”  This creek crossing from the first time I visited South Africa and the only time I backpacked into the Drakensburg Mountains with Jo’s son John as my guide.

Rocky shoreline with cairns Waterfall trail Tsitsikamma National Park South AfricaRita chose #6655.  Note the out of place stacked rocks on this Indian Ocean rocky shoreline seen along the Waterfall trail in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.

Cactus Hidden Valley Joshua Tree National Park CaliforniaJodee and Bill also chose #6655.  How opposite does it get seeing cactus along the Hidden Valley trail in Joshua Tree National Park.

stained glass Spider plant Tonasket WA 1982

original storefront Tonasket WA from S Donaldson

First store front Tonasket WA 7-1983Gypsy chose #1982.  The stained glass spider plant was made in 1982 for those of us who have black thumbs, like me.  I owned a craft consignment store then and a friend recently visited that town of Tonasket, Washington and took the second pic of the current storefront.  So I went digging for a shot of the original store front from 1983.  The store was 7×14 feet and filled with finished local crafts plus a workbench for my stained glass craft.

Sunset North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaJennifer chose #2000.  Yet another Grand Canyon sunset taken from the North Rim.

butterfly Berta's flower garden Yarnell ArizonaJo chose #9576.  A butterfly found Berta’s flower garden in Yarnell.  This week marks four years since her passing after being diagnosed with brain cancer.  Reading these old posts brought tears, smiles, and laughter.

Storm over the Painted Desert Hwy 89 North ArizonaJeff chose #725, “the date of our family reunion at Mt Shasta this year.”  I hope he’s already there having a great time and doesn’t have any storm clouds hanging overhead like these seen along SR89 north through the Painted Desert.

Snow on San Jacinto Peak & San Gorgonio Keys View Joshua Tree National Park CaliforniaSherry chose #6830.  Snow on the distant San Jacinto Peak and San Gorgonio from Keys View in Joshua Tree National Park, California in March of 2015.

Derek Suwaima-Davis Hoop dance Heritage Days North Rim Grand Canyon National Park ArizonaCathy chose #5072.  I’m sure she’s watched Derek hoop dance at Heritage Days on the North Rim Grand Canyon.  Hope he’ll be there again this year as they are bring back this celebration in August.

Commissioned stained glass candle holder Tonasket WA 1982Sallie and Bill get #50 for the number of words in their last comment.  They’ve been busy since returning to Oregon from Florida.  I was busy during the 1980s making stained glass projects like this commissioned candle holder.  Same time and place as my shop mentioned above.

San Juan Mts COIn July 2005 while working at Mesa Verde National Park I explored the nearby San Juan Mountains in Colorado.

Hi, I’m Gaelyn, the Geogypsy

I retired after 29 summer seasons as a Park Ranger, traveling solo for 40+ years. My passions include travel, connecting to nature, photography, and sharing stories.

I started exploring US National Parks in 1977 and 20 years later became a seasonal Park Ranger.  I’ve lived full-time in a RV for 30 years working summers and playing winters.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow old, other than grow up.

Let’s share our stories.  Here’s more of mine…

My wheeleastate

I am currently…
