This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including yard art, autumn at the North Rim, and an extreme in South African vehicles.  Some memories bring tears to my eyes in both joy and sadness.

Jennifer chose #8383.  She has an amazing yard full of nature and wildlife.  My friend Berta had that too but also decorated with rusty stuff like this that caught my eye and camera.

Diane and Nigel chose #1607.  She takes the best macro photos of flowers and insects. So this shot of a Checkered Puffball along the Widforss trail during late August 2010 on the North Rim Grand Canyon seems appropriate.

Alan chose #2767.  Fall Aspen glow on this hilltop ten years after the 2000 Outlet fire burned on the North Rim Grand Canyon.

Wanda chose #4646.  I wouldn’t want to live long term in this “dream machine” but it would be perfect for overland travels, very smart custom designed Toyota Land Cruiser seen at the Getaway Show during 2013 in South Africa.

Cathy chose #3691.  The VW I drove instead of the above parked by a dam (small reservoir) where I stayed at Rodene Farm Cottages in Ceres South Africa.

Doris chose #6057.  October’s late light and clouds created shadows on the Grand Canyon as seen from the North Rim Lodge.

Sue chose #2045, “because even though I have no desire to live to 100, that is the year that would happen.”  Life is about quality not longevity.  I think Sue would agree.  That was Berta’s philosophy too and she surrounded herself by things that made her happy.  Like this colorful walkway to her front door.

Sherry chose #7031, “for the day I move next.”  Unlike her lucky month long stay I moved almost every day while traveling through South Africa in 2013 and the pool below the Great Waterfall was a stop along the way and between mountain passes.  Thank goodness I could return during the next year’s visit when this shot was taken.

Jo chose #8067.  Rangers get paid in sunsets then add a touch of cloud inversion and it’s like overtime.  From the North Rim Grand Lodge verandah 8-7-15.

Jodee and Bill chose #3101.  Late light on the Inyo Mountains behind the boulders in Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California.

Rita chose #9999.  Berta said she rescued the broken and cracked, and that definitely included more than china and toys.  More yard art.

Sallie and Bill chose #8121, Bill’s birthday.  About a month after that in 2014 I shot the Fall Aspen on the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona.

My choice is a sunset from last week’s adventure.  I see a sea creature cloud emitting rays of light.

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including several shots in the Vermilion Cliffs, interesting vehicles, and a hint of where I currently am on a mini-vacation.

Rita chose #0832.  A popular view from a wooden bench along the Bright Angel Point trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon.

Sue chose #1993, “the year I ran Cataract Canyon.”  2010 was the year of my first journey to South Africa and here I’m seen hiking in the Drakensburg Mountains with Jo’s, see below, son John as my guide.

Jennifer chose #9292.  The famous, and getting overrun yet still difficult to get a permit, Wave.  Amazing lithified layers of sandstone from ancient sand dunes.

Jo chose #9653.  House Rock Valley Road is never in great condition, worse after rain.  Yet it’s the drive to the amazing trailhead leading to the above Wave via Wire Pass trail.

Diane and Nigel chose #907.  An April 2009 view of Wahweap Marina on Lake Powell near Page Arizona.  Today’s water level is way lower.

Alan chose #2610.  The welcome sign for the Old Mill Lodge where I stayed in Outdshoorn, South Africa 3-8-13 and saw a reindeer and lots of ostrich.

Cathy chose #1427.  When living at the remote North Rim of Grand Canyon it was a special day when the Flagstaff bookmobile arrived.

Sherry chose #4647.  During my 2013 visit to South Africa I attended a travel show and found my safari dream machine, a decked out Toyota Land Cruiser.

Doris chose #1712.  Driving east on SR89A from Kanab, Utah to Page, Arizona you can easily see the two lowest steps of the Grand Staircase, the Chocolate Cliffs below the towering Vermilion Cliffs.

Jeff chose #713, the day he started summer travels.  So this shot was May 2009 travels on a short road from SR89A, as above, to Lone Rock Beach along Lake Powell.

Lisa chose #63.  A scanned print from 1984 of my craft store window display in Tonasket, Washington for St Patrick’s Day.  I changed the painting monthly.  Very difficult to paint that large and especially as I wasn’t and still am not a painter.

Liberalwarrior chose #2047, “the year I hope to live to, but few more would be welcomed.”  Another site accessed from House Rock Valley Road, White Pocket is also part of the ancient Vermilion Cliffs sand dunes.

My choice is a hint of where I am for my 4-day vacation from a visit almost three years to the day.

This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including stormy skies, funny fence, and my favorite South African animal.

Jim and Diana chose #72, “how many days it has been since we arrived in Michigan to our un excavated cabin build site.”  They have come a long ways since then.  So have I since this shot of my 9-year old brother and me at two in 1956.

Cathy chose #0524.  During the February 2016 super bloom at Death Valley storm clouds built over the Badwater Basin but I honestly don’t remember rain falling.

Jennifer chose #7777.  Last light at Grand Canyon lit up the temples and accented the clouds.  #Rangersgetpaidinsunsets

Diane and Nigel chose #207.  I call this the fallen female fence.  Berta and I built a fence, but then the wind blew it over, and it was eventually repaired.  I’ll bet she’s still laughing about this.

Sue chose #116, “our temperature last Sunday in Grants Pass.”  Yea, that’s a heatwave in Oregon.  A much larger wave of heat during the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens left this scene of the upper Clearwater Valley 12 years later when I worked at the National Volcanic Monument in 1992.

Alan chose #6264.  A foggy Grand Canyon view from Cape Royal overlook on the North Rim seen during August 2014 monsoon.

Doris chose #9149.  This shot taken in 2015 would look much different today as Lake Powell is many feet lower and the Navajo Power Plant has been dismantled.

Rita chose #2139, one of two in a rather wonky panorama.  Also taken at a rather unusual place, the Owl House in South Africa.  Read more to understand this artists’ visions working broken glass in concrete.

Sherry chose #7946.  Yes, it’s the back end of an elephant, not a push me pull you.  Addo Elephant National Park is a favorite place to visit in South Africa, especially to see elephants.  However while on safari in any park I saw lots of butts as animals walked away.  My travel companion laughed at all my butt shots but I told her I’d do a complete blog post on butts.  Then turned out I did a post on head shots too.

Jo chose #1796.  I’ve crossed this suspension bridge over Storms River several times when visiting Tsitsikamma National Park along the coast of South Africa.

Sallie and Bill chose #841.  The sand is fine and lovely at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park near Kanab, Utah.

Jeff chose #4308, the designation date of a Torrey Pine as the first of 13 Heritage trees in the city of Coronado.  He plans to blog about this soon so check him out.  In the meantime, you can see this Speckled Weaver hanging around at Gelbek restaurant looking for food scraps in West Coast National Park, Langebaan South Africa.

I’ve been labeling photos from January 2021 and found this shot I really like and hadn’t shared yet.  Looking down on Quartzsite from a BLM camp along Plomosa Road.
