This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including the contrasts of snow and desert.
Sue chose #9149. At the base, about 90°, of the actual Wave there is frequently a pool of water that offers nice reflections but hikers are asked to stay out of the water to protect aquatic life. I saw tadpoles with bodies the size of quarters. Also keeps residues out of the water from things like sunscreen.
Alan and Random dot org chose #5788. The density and diversity of the Sonoran vegetation seems to increase at the southern Arizona border with Mexico. This is nearby at a favorite boondock in the Ajo area.
Gypsy chose #4214, “time spent in the deep south after Hurricane Katrina.” My mind sees bleakness after that storm, as many see a bleak desert. This particular area near the Arizona/California southern border lacks the dense growth of the desert seen above. Nice place for big views, rockhounding, and not far from Yuma.
Diane and Nigel chose #3112. Sunset over the snowy Sierra Mts as seen from the warmer Alabama Hills below. This was taken in March 2017 and there is already way more snow pack this year, which is awesome.
TreDeuce chose #1357. The second day after opening for the 2014 season at the North Rim Grand Canyon and I was on the Lodge verandah. Rangers get paid in sunsets.
Cathy chose #5891. She might recognize this view, or similar, of the cemetery in Kanab, Utah seen through my RV window while snowing. Taken 11-28-15 when I wintered at Crazy Horse RV Park (previous owners).
Jeff chose #167, for the predicted year end percentage of water content in the Sierra Mts snowpack. So good to see. Also good to see Wizard Island through a smoky haze at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon during nearby fires in mid-September 2007. I was working at Oregon Caves National Monument and took a road trip.
Wanda chose #3789. This lovely grove ended my Mt Palm Springs walk in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.
Doris chose #1110. Oh no, back to snow, the end of April 2010 the meadows wore white along the SR67 drive through the Kaibab National Forest, and the yet unopened North Rim Grand Canyon.
Sherry chose #1222. OK, an elephant foot might seem weird, however, visiting and learning at the Elephant Museum in Kruger National Park South Africa was not weird, it was fascinating. Besides I know Sherry takes pics of signs and displays. Do you know that elephants walk on their toes, that’s why they are often depicted as ballerinas.
Melissa chose #1010, for the stripes and spots from last weeks Zebras and Giraffes. Her choice is one of three in a panorama of Havasu Falls on the Havasupai reservation. Calcium rich water deposits travertine creating rim edged pools in the blue water and drip-like formations on the canyon walls.
My choice from 30 years ago, January 1992, when I was a student at WWU (Western Washington University), Bellingham. One of my nature getaways was as far as I could drive without getting stuck in snow for views of Mt Baker, northern most USA peak in the western Cascade Range.
